The peace that formerly reigned in Terra Nova has eroded, now little more than a memory. War ravages the continent. Disputes divide kingdoms; ideals divide families. The quest for power consumes absolutely and indiscriminately. None are immune to its allure.
Who will rise and who will fall? Only time—and ambition—will tell.

5 whole years of Heir Apparent goodness! When I started the site, I knew I was hunkering down for the long haul, but I never could have predicted the numerous twists and turns this roleplay site has seen. Hundreds of plots, characters, and members have come and gone, all leaving marks on the site. I am so very thankful for those who have invested. Because you keep coming back, keep getting on, and keep writing, Heir Apparent has the legacy it does today. Three cheers to us!
Kat wasnt too surprised her partner was snorting out his drink again . It wasn’t exactly the story you just went around telling. Not to mention the fact that saying the woman’s damn name seemed to bring her out of the walls.
”I don’t know how far they went. I didn’t ask, didn’t really want to picture it yah know.” But she still did on occasion. Mostly when she saw Regan, but also on occasion with Fabian. Her mind liked to play tricks like that, reminding her why she didn’t let anyone in. ”She knew we were married, and he either forgot or didn’t care, not sure which is worse. Oh and you can’t tell anyone by the way, I haven’t told my siblings.” Mina certainly would have cut his dick off, and Kasper? Well she wasn’t sure.

Octavius gaped at Katerina. Suddenly he saw her differently. She was strong, yes, but she was a victim. He pitied her. That is, he pitied her situation. He felt anger towards Fabian. Even a little towards Regan. She was his friend, but why had she done this to Katerina? He would be asking, no question about that.
"That's bullshit." Octavius said, and when he spoke the words he didn't say them with anger but with sorrow. His eyes searched hers, looking for her hurt. She didn't seem hurt. She seemed rather nonchalant. Octavius probably would have been crying while retelling this tale. That, or drunk and bitter. She was neither.
"I like to think you can tell if a person's a cheater by their track record, but I know that's not always the case." He said, slightly dejectedly. "If only Fabian had shown you what he was capable of prior to you marrying him. I guess that would be too convenient?" He chuckled mirthlessly.
It was weird finally telling someone about the whole thing. Putting it out there, and it was a little more real. Like she couldn't hide from it anymore. But she could, and she would continue to. Telling Octavius was just a sign of trust, she had every plan to go pack to ignoring the issue. Probably how she had got into the whole situation in the first place.
Snorting she shook her head. "He did, but don't we all think we're the exception? I think I thought it wouldn't bother me. Nothing else does. But all that matters is family." To Kat that was that was the exception to the rule. Family was it for her, and her husband had know that.
Kat took another sip and shook her head. "Family is important to you right? I don't think we'll get along otherwise." Smiling again she wanted to move on and hoped he would understand that. Pushing her was never a good idea.

He did. Wait...he did? Before she married him she was fully aware of his capacity to be a scoundrel and yet she married him anyway. She tied that into the importance of family, leaving Octavius confused. He might have asked clarifying questions, but she was clearly moving on, and he understood enough about her so far to know that he should, too.
"Of course." He said quickly, earnestly, because this was a truth to him, too. "Family is everything." He meant that with his whole heart. If only he knew the irony of his own words: this his very own family was not actually his own. That is, they were not biologically the one to which he belonged. But that secret had never been revealed to him, thus he pressed on, clueless to the circumstance of his birth. The heartbreak of what followed.
Kat had moved on with a purpose. She didn't like looking back on her past, questioning her choices. She preferred to look to the future. Because you couldn't chance what happened, so moving on was always the best bet. No point in thinking about what ifs.
"Good." Nodding her head she slammed back another drink. It was usual for her when drinking, having grown up drinking the hard stuff and enjoying it. "Have you gotten used to being back yet?" Of course neither of them would know how long they would stay, but it must have been a change even if he didn't want to settle too much. Then again he had talked about marriage last time, maybe he had plans for that as well.

Octavius shrugged one shoulder and tipped his head towards it.
"Yeah, I guess. There isn't much to get used to. It's just the next thing until I'm sent on to the next thing, you know?" His eyes did a survey of the room before ending on her. "Or, I guess, until we are sent to the next thing." He smiled sheepishly, having forgotten what this new pairing meant for them both. A forced companion. He wasn't mad about it.
"Mhmm we..." She was still getting used to the idea herself. She was a loner, she worked alone. But not anymore, not if she wanted to keep the rest of her siblings safe.
Taking a sip of her drink she looked around, itching to resort to some of her old ways. So many wages left in back pockets, bottles less than attended. This had to work though, and putting her best foot forward was probably a good idea. "So not settling, you got no friends or something?" Grinning her eyes twinkled, surely the goofy grin had made him a couple friends, although apparently not the romantic type.

Octavius watched Kat for a quiet moment, wondering what she was thinking about. She seemed a tortured soul type who put on a tough face to keep sadness at bay. No, she was sincerely tough, but it still served to hide more. He'd seen glimpses of the more here and there. He could admire that. They were all hiding something, anyway, weren't they? Even if they didn't know it. Some were aware of themselves, and others were blissfully ignorant to what their subconscious didn't want them to remember. Octavius was surely the latter.
"I've got friends." He grinned, shrugging. "But I haven't seen any of them in years now, so I'm sure if I'm still what they want." He shrugged again, expressing a lack of concern, but of course he cared. He was a man who cared deeply about things.
Kat shook her head, signaling for another drink, honestly at this point they should just leave the bottle it would be easier. "Nah, you seem like a good friend, they'll be glad to have you." She was a prickly cactus on the other hand, no one wanted to be her friend. Well except Rosamere. And Valeria. And maybe Faylin, but that was clearly only because of Kasper.
Taking the rest of her drink down, she spun the empty glass as she waited. Octavius and her were very different people, but maybe that was a good thing. Certainly if they both went right that wouldn't be a good way to fight.

Octavius smiled, appreciating the sentiment, but only shrugged his shoulder and let a lull settle into the conversation. He'd drank some but not as much as her. His eyes bounced between the glass that was delivered to her and her cheeks. She didn't seem to be a light weight, which was surprising considering her size. He wouldn't draw attention to it, of course.
Drinking liquor was almost as natural as breathing was to Kat. She grew up drinking with her twin, and she wasn't the type to get left behind or lose because she was smaller. Short or not, she had grown up a tolerance to the stuff over time. Especially since half the time taverns watered shit down to make more money.
"You know when someone is gorgeous and knows it? That was my sister. Confident as hell, she learned from the best of course." Her grin twitched into something sincere for a moment before she shook her head. "Not that it matters now. Being strong meant nothing. Insides still got pulled outside." And despite the fact that same thing could happen to her, Katerina would get even someday, she had to for Mina.

Octavius smiled with Kat as she spoke of her sister. When she ended, however, he swallowed hard to keep from gagging. Her insides...? It was gross and unusual.
"How..." his throat was dry, so he swallowed and tried again, "how do you know it wasn't an animal?" Didn't only animals do that sort of thing? His question implied he thought that much.
”Slightly offended you think I’d let my sisters fighting abilities slip so much she couldn’t fight off an animal.” Laughing, although completely inappropriate, it slowly trailed off, the grin twitching at her lips. It was irrational to let familial connections affect her. Sure it’s what had originally pulled her from the military, but it was starting to make her feel weak, which was entirely unacceptable. ”So no, I don’t think it was an animal.” Pulling down the last of her drunk she exhaled sharply through her teeth. Telling people things sucked.

Octavius didn't say anything more, not wanting to offend Kat, even if she did smile as she said it. Her reasoning was...illogical. Her sister couldn't have been killed by an animal simply because she was a good fighter? What if the animal had descended upon her from the trees? She would not have had the time to speak an incantation. Even he, trained soldier as he was, would have a very difficult time fighting off a mountain lion. To think that someone had killed her and strewn her entrails across the ground just didn't make sense to him. That was inhuman.
About time for a subject change. He rapped his knuckled on the table, giving them a beat so the turn of the conversation wouldn't be insulting.
"Can I ask why you didn't just pair up with your husband?" Not exactly a lighter topic, but definitely something he'd been thinking about.
There was a lot that told Kat it wasn't an animal, Van Zant's always had knives on them, and hers had been tossed aside, with blood on it. Not something an animal could pull out, and not something she would have just poked with. Mina was smart, if it was an animal attack it would have been heavily wounded or dead next to her.
But he was moving on to different topics. One she had already explained to Captain Delaney. "You and our Captain had the same question, I don't get it one bit. But you know more than I told her. Trust. I don't have it with him anymore, how am I supposed to rely on someone with that?" A fresh slate had seemed smart, like a good idea. Apparently no one got that.
