HISTORY OF NEVERMERE
Nevermere was once a humble, peaceful kingdom nestled beyond the west mountain range that was known for nothing other than being there. The people farmed, fished, and explored the water in their well-made vessels. They've been ruled by a king for as long as they can remember, and the kings were always fair and benevolent, wearing the crown with great responsibility.
Everything changed when a prince of Lorendale usurped the throne.
Following King Julius Rainecourt II of Lorendale's decision to name his second eldest son, Leopold, as king of Lorendale, Julius Rainecourt III, who would have been king had his father continued with Lorendale tradition, abandoned Lorendale with 1/3 of the kingdom's army. They crossed Coheed, cutting down whoever stood in their path, and made the treacherous journey through the mountain range that acted as a protective wall for the small kingdom of Nevermere. They came in peace--initially--and King Urion Ellis welcomed them with open arms. Julius and his men began to train the king's soldiers and teach them tactical things they had never before dreamed of. The outsider quickly became the King's friend and adviser, so much so that King Urion promoted him to be the leader of all the kingdom's military. Though pleased with his new importance, Julius could not quench his desire--his birthright--to be king. He began to see what Nevermere might become under his rule. This vision became an obsession.
Taking the throne was not hard. It began with a conversation that ended in him gutting the king of Nevermere with his dagger. When the soldiers of the land tried to rise up, they were met with the swords of their mentors, those loyal to Julius, and were quickly brought to their knees. Julius killed the king's eldest daughter when she refused to become his wife, and after taking the second eldest daughter, he banished the rest of the Ellis children from the land.
Julius ruled Nevermere for twenty-one long years and brought great advancement to the kingdom. Under his rule Nevermere became a military kingdom, prizing service above even nobility, and encouraging a hunger for combat and control that drives the younger generation to this day. Where before Nevermere was heavily complimentary, with men holding all the reigns, the kingdom has experienced a gradual leveling in equality among the sexes that they never before knew; they also have a newfound confidence in their ability to defend their lands, should they ever need to. Where before the magic that the women were capable of was something casual and understated, really only practiced by those in covens, Julius has empowered the witches and directed them in turning their supernatural abilities into potent weapons in service to the kingdom.
Understandably, the people were divided concerning their feelings of the monarch. Many praised the king and his achievements, and looked forward to his son's rule. There were others, however, who whispered of the banished prince, hoping and praying he would return to the land to restore the kingdom to what it once was. In the end, whether the result of the whispers or some other mysterious fate, King Julius vanished one stormy night, and Prince Cassian Rainecourt promptly became King in the winter of 819.
Under King Cassian's rule the kingdom of Nevermere has come out from its shell and asserted itself as one of the greatest power houses Terra Nova has ever seen. They helped free Cambria from the clutches of Coheed, and in doing so absorbed the small kingdom into itself, and when Coheed sought liberation from the gifteds of Lorendale it was Nevermere that came to its aid, also absorbing the kingdom. The king also married the Queen of Lorendale, and, per their marriage agreement, became a ruling monarch in that kingdom. Thus, Cassian Rainecourt, and Nevermere by extension, rules well over half of all of Terra Nova, and has now set his sights on Dresmond.
