The peace that formerly reigned in Terra Nova has eroded, now little more than a memory. War ravages the continent. Disputes divide kingdoms; ideals divide families. The quest for power consumes absolutely and indiscriminately. None are immune to its allure.
Who will rise and who will fall? Only time—and ambition—will tell.

5 whole years of Heir Apparent goodness! When I started the site, I knew I was hunkering down for the long haul, but I never could have predicted the numerous twists and turns this roleplay site has seen. Hundreds of plots, characters, and members have come and gone, all leaving marks on the site. I am so very thankful for those who have invested. Because you keep coming back, keep getting on, and keep writing, Heir Apparent has the legacy it does today. Three cheers to us!

The Queen of Arynn Frey and the King of Nevermere had their usual place that they always met. Cassian used his port key to get there. He had sent a letter ahead, of course, arranging this meeting with the other monarch. He had two very specific things he wanted to discuss with her, and time was of the essence.
"Your majesty," he greeted, and rather than bowing he dipped his head, as the two easily assumed a more comfortable routine with one another in the privacy of this meeting place. He would move to take his seat, but no, he still hadn't drank the tea.

Kimora would forever serve Cassian tea. Her greatest hope and wish was that one day he would oblige her in taking some and no, it wasn't poisonned. Although in truth, she wasn't entirely sure if that was because he genuinely didn't like the beverage or if for the rest of his days, he would be weary of her preferred way of getting rid of unwanted nuisances.
"King Cassian-" She would return the nod of the head. "I trust that things are going well?" Actually, she wasn't. There were always whispers and rumors, good and bad and stories made their way even to Arynn Frey. It was the truth or falsity behind them that intrigued the slowly aging queen.

"Of course." Cassian affirmed, keeping his response vague. He knew, just as she did, that not everything was going as he preferred...but in general all was well. Nevermere was not at war. The kingdom was flourishing. Lorendale, too. So then, the smaller things could be forgotten in this conversation between monarchs.
"And I've seen and marveled at the progress of Arynn Frey's defenses." It was a compliment to her, of course. "Have your refugees blessed your lands?" There was a time, no doubt, when he expressed hesitance about her allowing Dresmondi to settle in her lands...but she had done as she pleased, and he sincerely hoped it was working out for the best. Cassian allowed Dresmondi to travel across the Coheed lands that Nevermere now owned, but they were not allowed past the mountain wall and they were discouraged from stopping their wheels for too long.

Kimora nodded her head gratefully at the compliment. "Thank you. We hope it will be our masterwork."
"We have been welcoming the Dresmondi since the cataclysm that affected their lands some years ago." Whilst there might have been some uncertainty and discontent initially as they had arrived, the refugees had become remarkably quiet with their reservations when the Eldouir had decided to take over. "They abide by our laws and in exchange for shelter and the right to use our lands provide us with a strong workforce. It would seem that for the time being at least, everyone benefits."
Kimora would pause to take a sip of her tea before putting the cup back down once more. "Even if they wanted to leave, which many probably would. There's little chance of them doing so whilst Dresmond is in the hands of the Eldouir. We do get some who manage to escape, the tales they tell are quite chilling."

Cassian was pleased with the direction of this conversation. This was one of the topics he wanted to bring to her. In fact, the main course, you might say.
"We have had two Dresmondi come to our lands of late." He said it as if he could relate to what she described, but of course, Nevermere wasn't hosting them as Arynn Frey was. The kingdom of enchantments had better resources to provide for and control any potential uprisings. They also likely had a general temperament about their people that better tended to what the refugees needed.
"They would like to see Dresmond liberated from the Eldouir." He'd hesitate only for a pause, eying her. "I intend to help them." His gaze asked a question his mouth didn't: would Arynn Frey join him? Their involvement wasn't necessary, but perhaps if they did this together it would further solidify the alliance they had been enjoying for some years now.

Kimora listened to the very young king patiently. She wasn't terribly surprised by the subject, indeed it was one which they would have struggled to ignore given the current circumstances.
"A noble endeavor indeed but you must realize that it most certainly won't be an easy affair." Kimora spoke calmly, as if she was debating with the king whether or not it would be a good idea to go for a picnic on account of the dark cloud hanging in the sky. "I've heard of the atrocities that go on there but also that Lorendale's devil and his followers have dug themselves in deep." If the Dresmondi tales were to be believed, Hiram Eldouir had reimagined himself as some manner of king, ruling over them. Unfortunately, more than a couple had decided to throw their lot in with him.
"Unfortunately, I will agree that something needs to be done. I'm grateful to never have met the man but if his reputation is to be believed-" Even in the relatively peaceful and removed Arynn Frey, stories were told. There was a reason they were building their wall after all. "-He will not content himself with sitting by idle forever."

Cassian maintained his calm composure, his face even neutral but not unpleasant as Kimora brought her warning to him. It wasn't as if he hadn't weighed the risk. In fact, he was certain that the death of his own citizens meant far more to him than it did to her. She would do well, however, to not forget the competence of his military. They had seen real battle in the last seven years and had proven themselves to be a hard-fought foe.
"We are making intentional preparations." He returned vaguely. "I also intend to rally champions from all of my kingdom's territories." He meant Coheed and Cambria, of course. They were all Nevermere now, after all.
"I agree that the Eldouir will not remain as quiet as they have forever. I hope to eradicate them once and for all, a favor done for all of Terra Nova." He tilted his head ever so slightly, considering Kimora. "I wonder if Arynn Frey would like to have a hand in this coming victory?" Perhaps she would think him arrogant for his confidence, but Cassian knew what he was doing. At least, he thought he did.

Cassian's words earned a little huff of bitter amusement from the queen. "It would seem that if there is one thing capable of uniting our continent, it is hatred of that madman." She didn't like madmen, they were unpredictable and that made them both dangerous and more of a challenge to counter. After all, they couldn't be reasoned with nor always phased by the prospect of annihilation. If her allies and their subjugated nations/vassals/soon-to-be vassals could deal with him, so much the better.
Kimora looked down into her teacup, thinking about the other monarch's words. Not that the concept and notion hadn't already crossed her mind previously. "Arynn Frey hasn't been to war in centuries." True, they had been periodically attacked by Coheed's tribes across their borders but that was more of a nuisance than an actual threat and one which had been easily dealt with. This was something dangerous, something unprecedented. "In truth, that's not likely to be a decision I can make by myself." Not entirely true but certainly the queen could make no promises. It would at least have to go to a cabinet meeting and whilst the senators had no real power, they were certainly capable of raising objections and complaints at the prospect of war, some of which the queen was more than willing to accept would be valid.
"Some enchantments would certainly be possible..." The queen pondered for a few seconds. Even that would be taking a side and that rogue element would suddenly find himself with a reason to both hate and want rid of the kingdom which, up until now, had more or less kept itself to itself. They could have done with another couple of years, just until the wall was finished. Maybe then there would be less hesitation.

Cassian nodded his head, understanding her hesitations. He had plenty himself. That was the only reason Dresmond had remained untouched for five long years under Eldouir rule.
"Any assistance Arynn Frey finds herself willing to lend would be more than welcome. My preparations will not be finalized until spring at the earliest." He felt silent for a beat, allowing that part of the conversation to conclude before he took them to the next. "On the subject of enchantments, I wondered if I might commission something bigger than I have before. Something comparable to the wall you are putting around your kingdom, only much smaller. A shield for my castle." It would be no mystery why he would want that. He accepted the risk of individuals using magic to travel into Nevermere or even Skia, but to be able to protect the walls in which he worked and his children grew--and Kimora's daughter-in-law and eldest grandchild, too--that would be invaluable.

Kimora nodded slowly, thoughtfully. Spring was still a good few months away but regrettably not far enough for them to finish their wall. They would likely still be a year out by the time that Cassian got things rolling. Not ideal but then at least with some warning they might be able to brace themselves for any potential fallout that might arise. "We will most certainly have had enough time for some cabinet meetings between now and then." The queen informed him. "You will have an answer by winter."
His request for an enchantment was not an unreasonable one. In truth, Kimora had been thinking about offering such a gift. "Of course. I understand your concern. I've had something similar created for our palace, not that your rogue seems to have taken much interest in us yet." That was a blessing but there was little doubt in Kimora's mind that sooner or later the Eldouir would work their way around to Arynn Frey. Hence why she was so keen to ensure that they were protected. "I could ask for a shield or something that would disable anyone foolish enough to try and teleport in without the use of a portkey. That might give you the opportunity to apprehend him should he try to sneak in behind your defenses?"

Cassian inwardly recoiled at her referencing Hiram as his rogue. There was a combination of shame at Nevermere's failure at that trial, mixed with a bitterness at the state of things. None of it showed on his face, however, and not a step was lost in their conversation as they casually discussed the fate of their kingdoms.
"I should like to request," Cassian said, a hint of discomfort in his voice, "a shield from portkey uses, as well. Perhaps excluding mine and my queen's... Were you aware that a citizen of yours, one Cyrus Blackwood, used a portkey to enter my garden in Skia?" He watched her closely for any indication of her knowledge. "The conversation was brief and demanding, and soon as I ascertained that he was not there at your behest I sent him away. In the weeks following I discovered just how far his reach into Nevermere went." This was the first time Cassian had to bring an issue to Kimora. A dog off its leash, you might say.

Cyrus Blackwood... That name seemed to be coming up increasingly these days and often in circumstances where it really shouldn't have been involved. Kimora's face would darken somewhat upon its mention, adding it to an ever growing list of occasions where the man seemed to have decided to stick his nose into something he shouldn't have.
"I have heard of the man." Kimora replied. "I don't know exactly what he's playing at but he does seem to have been getting himself involved in international politics-" The queen would allow Cassian to read whatever he wanted into that particular statement. "He's acting of his own accord, without any orders from me or even without consulting another member of government. If you could provide me whatever information you might have regarding his recent incursions, then I will hold him accountable for his actions. We do not like rogues here in Arynn Frey." It was a true statement. Rogues were dangerous, unpredictable and regardless of their intentions, through acting alone, they could easily make a mess of a perfectly crafted and planned out scheme. In this case, it was a bit of an insult for a kingdom who liked to be in complete control.
"I shall see to it that your shield is prepared as quickly as possible." Of course, she might ask her enchanters in secret that one portkey from Arynn Frey could be allowed past as well without the young king knowing. It was always best to prepare for any and all potential eventualities when looking to the future.
