The peace that formerly reigned in Terra Nova has eroded, now little more than a memory. War ravages the continent. Disputes divide kingdoms; ideals divide families. The quest for power consumes absolutely and indiscriminately. None are immune to its allure.
Who will rise and who will fall? Only time—and ambition—will tell.

5 whole years of Heir Apparent goodness! When I started the site, I knew I was hunkering down for the long haul, but I never could have predicted the numerous twists and turns this roleplay site has seen. Hundreds of plots, characters, and members have come and gone, all leaving marks on the site. I am so very thankful for those who have invested. Because you keep coming back, keep getting on, and keep writing, Heir Apparent has the legacy it does today. Three cheers to us!
The offending parchment stared at her from the makeshift target, seeing the words in her head even though she couldn't see the actual words at this distance. Her supposedly well-meaning aunt had sent yet another letter "on her father's behalf" that she needed to come back home and "do her goddess-given duties to her family". There was a whole section, once again, about how her bastard of an uncle did nothing wrong and she needed to accept that Elletta was the one who screwed up, who'd led him on.
Elletta had nearly set the thing on fire when she read that part but had held back since she didn't think she'd actually be sble to keep it contained. So she did the next best thing by stringing her bow and pinning the shitstain letter to a target. Five arrows already stuck out of the letter and she was aiming her sixth arrow now.

Coheed was both exactly what Octavius had expected and nothing like it. The similarities to Cambria were shocking, and the differences from both the female territory and the rumors about Coheed were enough to leave this soldier wondering what else he’d been lied to about. He marveled, to be sure, but in a wary, fascinated way. He did not forget that this was technically Nevermere but not yet Nevermere.
His patrol shift through the streets was over. It had only lasted a few hours, shorter than it would have had he been in Nevermere, and he was headed to grab some grub. His path took him past the archery range, and it was there that he saw her.
“Ell?” He said it quietly, voice thick with disbelief, still stepping towards her but slowly. His eyes did not deceive him. “Ell!” The second time was a declaration. He took off sprinting for her, and would, unless she stopped him, catch her in a hard, firm hug.
She wasn't expecting company so perhaps she could be forgiven for releasing the string on her bow early. The arrow went flying, barely sticking in the top of the target as her head whipped around. Elletta had half a mind to tell whoever it was just what a bad idea it was to just yell at someone. Except she didn't, because she had to do a double take at the man.
"Tavi!" Her smile practically split her face in half as she dropped her bow to the ground. She squeezed him back, hard as she could.

Rest assured, Octavius could squeeze harder. In fact, he'd pick her feet up off the ground if she didn't stop him and swing her in a half circle before setting her down again and holding her out at an arm's length for a looking over. Right now, she was just the best friend. Before he had left, she had been the friend who he'd wanted to turn into a lifetime partner, but fate had had other plans for them. There wasn't much about her that was overly romanticized in his mind. She was pretty enough, pretty as ever, and seemed to be in good health. He was pleased.
"I can't believe you're here." He said through his grin.
The unexpected spin pulled a surprised laugh from Elletta. A little brighter, a little freer than it'd been back in Skia when she'd been watching over her shoulder after her uncle. She hadn't expected for him to turn up here, of all places, but she wasn't going to look a gift horse in the mouth when she hadn't seen her best friend in years. Regardless of any feelings from before, he was still her best friend first and foremost.
"Been here for a bit. I thought you were still over in Cambria?"

Octavius blew air out of his mouth at her revelation. He should have known. Did he know? He should have asked more. He could have written her a letter or two...
"I was there for a bit, too." He agreed. "Four years. Then they brought me home for a few months, partnered me up with a witch, and deployed me here for the foreseeable future."
If it had been right after being deployed, she might've been a little upset that he wasn't her paired witch. But she'd been back on the fence about the whole pairing deal for a good while at this point. Still, there was a little prick of 'what about me'in the back of her head.
"Looks like someone's been a busy bee lately." She teased him, nose scrunched a little as her grin widened.

Octavius, typically good-natured, grin in response to her tease. There was a pang of sadness that he felt, though he couldn’t have placed his finger on it in that moment. It didn’t show on his face, however, because he was earnestly still so glad to see her that the sentiment eclipsed everything else.
“What do I need to know to survive Coheed?” He leaned in as he said it, as if she had insider information, or as if she didn’t want enhanced ears listening in.
"Weeeeell the ladies are a lil skittish," she brought up her hand and pinched two fingers together before zooming them out, "but I think I made a friend with one of em finally. Hm. What else."
She tilted her chin, pretending to think, as her hand came back to rest on his arm. It didn't even occur to her to pull away from his touch, just happy to be in his presence again. "A couple folks have punchable faces but don't actually punch em right off the bat."

Octavius' hold of Elletta's arms softened and then released, not an awkwardly abrupt abandonment of the woman, but certainly a releasing. He couldn't just stand there holding here, now could he?
"I've found there are punchable faces in all corners of the world." He said, feigning a morose sigh. His smile faded a little and his expression took on something more serious. "You're good?"
It was almost an after thought to make sure that she didn't continue to touch him as he let go. As in, her hand was moving with his arm for a half second before she realized that no, she probably shouldn't do that. Not when he was paired and she definitely was not following that train of thought anytime soon.
She snorted a little, because yeah, there were punchable faces everywhere. He certainly wasn't wrong about that. But she softened a bit too, a little less super-bright excitement and more contentment.
"I've been doing better. Coheed wasn't my first, or any choice, but it's been better than I expected."

Octavius felt...awkward. That first hug had been natural and normal, a part of everything he knew of Elletta, but standing before her now he felt painfully aware of just how much time has passed between them. How much they had missed. How much had changed. He shook the feeling of guilt that was tempting to guide his next words, and instead chose to offer a hand. Not literally, but figuratively.
"Well, you look good. And I'm glad to see you." It was bold, but there it was. In case she wasn't sure where they stood. In case she didn't know if he still valued her, because he did, even if the years had seen to an effective rift between them.
"I'd love to catch up when you're done training. Maybe find something to drink?"
Elletta felt the slight flush to her cheeks. Which, she mentally smacked herself for because he was her friend first. Just a friend, who maybe didn't mean it the way she still kinda-sorta thought about every now and again.
"You look good too. I've really missed you, Tavi." He was her best friend, even without possible other feelings. "Well, I can always whip something up too. Believe or not, I can actually cook now!"

The snort that erupted from Octavius' nostrils was nothing short of insulting.
"Sorry, sorry! He said quickly, raising his hands in case she had turned on him. "I just, uh...remember the last thing I ate..." he shook his head and then shuddered, as if the memory of that meal still haunted him to this very day. An easy grin claimed his face. "I'm proud of you."
