Thom shook his head with a little snort at Berengar's question, though he was reasonably impressed the young soldier had even managed to work his way through it to that extent. That was rather promising, in fact, even if he had just focused on a random sentence halfway down the report. "In my experience, the only people who even try to sound that pretentious are often the ones that say very little in actual fact. But you can glean a few things about the person from the way they write. General Laurent, for example, never actually participated in any of these events himself, but took all of his information from the report on the previous page and dressed it up before sending it on to the crown." He shook his head as well with a little sigh. "Of course, the general came from a noble family himself, but that does seem to have driven some rather odd notions into his head when it comes to writing, particularly military reports. Pusillanimous, and good job on that, by the way, refers to someone timid, perhaps cowardly, which does seem a bit off when you consider that in that particular skirmish, they fought to the last man, and it was the patrol that allowed him to leave."
What he had said was the truth, after all. Temperance, living on the edge of town, had really not interacted with many people aside from her customers and Melody. Sure, she had her family, but their residence was nearly halfway across the city. Thom was much the same, only really interacting with people in a professional capacity, so having someone like Berengar coming over for no reason aside from the company and the food... and the puppy, of course, was a fresh and new experience for the both of them. They didn't really mind if he did or didn't read the book, but both of them did have an interest in seeing him improve, if only because they both believed it would be better for him. They wouldn't force the young man, of course, but poking and prodding a little bit was only to be expected.
"At least understanding that is a rather good first step." Thom chuckled, glancing down at the still slumbering form of the puppy under the table, watching the oversized paws twitch slightly. "The best advice I can offer is really focusing on what you know first. You might not be asked to write up reports, but writing them up regardless could be a good place to start. Think of it as a journal of sorts, just writing up what happens to you during the day, what you do, where you go." Nabbing another biscuit from the basket, he lifted his shoulders in a small shrug. "That's a good way to practice writing, at least. Since no one is going to be reading it aside from you, there's very little pressure, and the only expectations you have to meet are your own."
