[ For @thom, following Too Proud to Beg ]
Although Gael had spoken of having something planned soon, nothing seemed to have come of it. A few days had passed since his visit and he hadn't returned, nor had Temperance received any kind of letter or package. It did make her feel a little guilty that her worries had forced Thomas to work from home when he could have gone to his office as usual, but only a little guilty. It was difficult to be too disappointed when it was so nice having him around during the day.
She should have known. Gael was an addict. Maybe he meant well when he’d made his plans, but to expect him to follow up on them was silly. He had probably stolen the money that he’d given her that day, and then used whatever was left to get his next fix. And when that was gone there were no more plans. There was only the drug. The thought made Temperance sad. She’d hoped that he really was doing better. That he’d found a way to crawl out of that life and make honest money and stay clean. But how often did that really happen?
The more days that passed, the less Temperance worried about Gael. Thomas had been looking into him, but he hadn't come to Temperance with his findings yet. She hoped that meant that he hadn't found anything particularly troublesome. Surely if he had, he would have mentioned it. And that kind of thing usually took time. It hadn't been all that long.
The morning began as it often did: Thomas woke up first, even though he didn't need to because he didn't have to walk to his office. Temperance woke up at a somewhat more leisurely pace, sometime after Melody had already arrived and began breakfast. The door was propped open for Artos to come and go as he pleased, but he remained inside nonetheless, just under Melody's feet in hopes of catching whatever might fall to the floor while she cooked. They all had breakfast, and while Melody worked at the laundry, Temperance went out to prune and tend the garden. After a few hours under the Nevermeran clouds, she returned inside for a cup of water before she treated to her greenhouse.
Stepping into the spare room, which had been turned into somewhat of a makeshift office for Thomas, she walked to the desk and leaned over to kiss Thomas on the cheek. "You look very focused," she said, running her hand slowly through his dark hair. "Has anything exciting come up?"
