[for Ermir ]
When Embric saw Ermir as he was leaving from Ben’s house, having just finished listening to the old man enthuse about planting trees, he did not make the conscious decision to approach him. In the split second between recognition and the redirection of his steps, the impulse to just get a difficult discussion over with took over, and by the time the regret came rushing in, it was too late to turn away.
It had been a few days since Adeline, and though he had yet to see the queen again, she and the threat she posed hadn’t been far from Embric’s thoughts. And neither had the horrifying revelation regarding the violation of his friend. Torn between wanting to do something but not knowing what – with Xan, he had a history of providing her with a shoulder to cry on, but he had never offered such support to Ermir and wasn’t even sure if it would be welcome – Embric had wavered and retreated, shamefully hiding away with his uncertainty. He thought it important to at least tell his friend that he was there for him if he wanted it, but the tavern keeper didn’t even know he knew – and that seemed like a violation in and of itself.
Embric had other business to discuss – ideas, possible plans – as well, but to do so without acknowledging what had happened seemed insensitive. Or would Ermir appreciate him simply glossing over it, not mentioning it at all? He didn’t know. But he would find out sooner rather than later.
“Hey Ermir,” Embric said as he approached, keenly aware that without the walls of the tavern around them, they were potentially under far more scrutiny than usual. Ever helpful, the other man appeared to be assisting another Dresmondi with some work, and Embric took the opportunity for an excuse to linger. “Want some help with that?” From her perch atop a nearby building, Aine relayed the rest of the message to Ciel: “I have an idea or two I would like to discuss with you, if you have the time.”
