The peace that formerly reigned in Terra Nova has eroded, now little more than a memory. War ravages the continent. Disputes divide kingdoms; ideals divide families. The quest for power consumes absolutely and indiscriminately. None are immune to its allure.
Who will rise and who will fall? Only time—and ambition—will tell.

5 whole years of Heir Apparent goodness! When I started the site, I knew I was hunkering down for the long haul, but I never could have predicted the numerous twists and turns this roleplay site has seen. Hundreds of plots, characters, and members have come and gone, all leaving marks on the site. I am so very thankful for those who have invested. Because you keep coming back, keep getting on, and keep writing, Heir Apparent has the legacy it does today. Three cheers to us!

[ Made for @katerina ]
They’d been in Coheed for months now, and Octavius could sincerely say he didn’t love it. Didn’t hate it, but didn’t love it. Training the women here was tedious and burdensome, especially when he butted heads with the Cambrian, Willa Wren, who was apparently also training them. Some were eager to learn but most seemed to not want to look at Octavius, much less do what he asked of them. He felt it was a lost cause.
But this was his task. It wasn’t about feelings, but about duty. He was ever dutiful to king and country.
Training shift over in which he and Kat had overseen weapons training with a group, he found himself silently considering his partner as he carried the barrel of wooden weapons to put it away.
Was it just him, or had things been off ever since that tavern meeting in Nevermere? It was months ago, but it hadn’t helped to see Regan that night with the fire. Octavius was extra careful with Kat these weeks, not wanting to break anything else between them…
His distracted stare cause him to miss the stone in his path. He stepped on it, rolled his ankle, and deposited the barrel, wooden weapons, and himself onto the dusty earth.
Kat had a slightly easier time with the women. Probably helped she was one herself, although it was still weird to be training them while still training herself. And despite hating the idea at the start it wasn’t all too bad. A lot of them weren’t half bad, some better and more committed then those who signed on off mandatory in Nevermere.
Still, she’d soldiered on alone, what she did best, despite the fact she had a partner right there if she was a little less stubborn.
One that apparently was a bit clumsy after a days work. After the clatter Kat stopped and turned, head titled to the side. ”Decided to take a spontaneous break?” Taking a step closer she didn’t reach out a hand yet, surveying the scene a little. Slightly enjoying it.

Oh it was enjoyable. The wooden weapons were strewn about the ground. Octavius had attempted not to drop them during his fall but hand instead ended up falling atop the barrel and then rolling off. Not only was his ankle throbbing, but he’d banged his chin and opened the skin and now lay groaning on his back.

Octavius looked up at the sky. It was different here. More pleasant. For a moment he could forget the sharp pain in his chin and the dull throb of his ankle. Just a moment. Kat appeared above him and shadowed the sky, reminding him of the few but complicated things in his life.
“I’ll live he sighed.” He slowly sat up, giving her room to lean back so he didn’t whack her in the face with his head. Once upright, he set a pointed gaze on her.
“Are you good?” She knew what he was talking about, surely.
Leaning back and nodding her head, Kat brushed off her legs but stayed closer to her partner than she had been recently. Couldn’t have a broken wolf around.
Rocking back and forth on the balls of her feet and heels, the soldier looked at the scattered weapons with a sigh. ”I’ll live.” Followed by a hard exhale through her nose.
”During the fire, well before. Did you see that thing?” That she was pretty sure she did, but also wasn’t entirely sure if it had been a mirage or figment of her imagination.

Octavius was surprised by how casually Katerina seemed to be willing to move on. Her eyed her for a skeptical moment, then decided to follow suit. Life was too short to dwell.
“Yeah.” Octavius raised his brows as he said it, remembering the layers of confusion from that night. “It was…it was like a hole…”
”I-“ Shaking her head, Kat was pretty sure that she would sound nuts saying it. But at this point she had nothing to lose. She needed a hand and while she still wasn’t sure if she should keep Octavius at arms length, he was the best option available.
With and breath in and out she figured out how to phrase it. ”I think I did it somehow.”

Octavius let her words sink into the silence. She had done it? Well, she was a witch…but opening holes wasn’t exactly in their box of tricks. He blinked stupidly for a moment before slowly saying,
“If you did it once you should be able to do it again.” He was skeptical, sure, but something about the fragility of their relationship of late had him hesitant to contradict her.
"Well if I knew how to do it don't you think I would have already?" Blowing out air through her nose in frustration Kat was very annoyed with herself on the matter. Because she should be able to do it again. Magic was unpredictable, but only to a certain extent.
Looking at Octavius she laughed. "Can't exactly start a fire to recreate the situation either."

Octavius had meant to be encouraging, but Kat’s response served to prove he had only provoked her. Again. There was something tiring about always being chased by bees.
He cringed through a smile. He didn’t know how magic worked. He couldn’t walk her through how she might replicate what transpired.
“Uhm, no…” he slowly confirmed, an idea striking him, “but! Maybe you can go to where there already is one. Today is a burn day.” A large fire would be made by locals to remove any trash that wasn’t being put into soil. He bounced his brows at her.
”Why not right?” Kat oh so wished she had an easy explanation or even someone to ask, maybe Kennet when she got back? If she ever got back of course, and with their luck recently it seemed like chaos popped up at every turn.
Reaching a hand down with a snort and raised brow of her own. ”of course if you can walk that is”

Octavius didn’t take her hand because he needed her help. He took it because she had offered it, and he tried to take any opportunity with her that he could. They’ve been paired for months now and if anything she’d grown more confusing the more he got to know her.
He relied on his good leg to get him upright, and would use her shoulder if she offered it.
“Let’s do it.” Conveniently, they weren’t too far from the burn pit.
Kat probably wouldn't have offered a shoulder, not that she would have been able to with the significant height difference anyways. At least that seemed like sound reasoning in her mind.
"And you'll have to swing at me or something I think. Sense of danger and all." Not that it would feel like danger coming from her partner who had tripped just a few moments ago. But it was worth a shot.

Octavius chuckled uncomfortably at her suggestion that he swing at her. Best case scenario? He missed. Worst? He struck and Kat took it out of his hide. He’d seen what she could do to an opponent and he wanted no part in it. But, ever the compliant young man,
“Sure, okay.” He started to hobble towards the fire. She could have at least offered her should for his hand, as one uses a side-table while putting on a shoe…
