[ For Hiram Eldouir ]
Xanthe packed the heavy cloak into her bag, resting the much more dainty gloves on top and taking a moment to stare at them. Chewing her lips anxiously, she flipped the top flap over the bag and bound it closed, then looked down at her clothes. Simple, sure, but at least they were clear. Savi shot her a look from across the room that had her turning to meet his dark eyes. "You know how she feels about us. That we're all dirty...I don't want to give her another reason to call us creatures."
"Are you certain the concern over your appearance is for the false queen?" Savi challenged, his meaning entirely certain. Xanthe's lips parted but for a moment she could say nothing. She pulled the strap over her shoulder and walked for the door.
"I don't want to give any of them more of a reason to look down on us. It's bad enough having to bite back my anger against her, but something tells me it will be more difficult to hide in front of him. I'll go. I'll get my answers. I'll leave."
"You think he'll let you leave? You saw what he did to that woman when you left the first time. Expecting such luck a second time is nothing more than denial, Xanthe." Yes, maybe so. Probably so. No, almost certainly, Xanthe thought as they exited the hut and began their walk to the estate. Dangerous didn't even begin to describe this plan. Denial was putting it nicely. Foolishness had a way of disguising itself as so many other things.
"When I left, I was certain Tazmin would find me. Try to kill me, maybe, do whatever she wanted to get her revenge just because I'd asked him to send her away. But she wouldn't lay a hand on me. He let her..." she dipped her head as other Dresmondi passed by. There was no meeting of the eyes, no smiles. The air was growing colder and she thought of all the time she'd spent making this cloak instead of a warmer one of her own. "Whatever happens, at least I'll know."
"We'll both know, in the end." Savi confirmed gravely, all but certain of their fate. His warning tightened something in her chest. Maybe she should have said goodbye to Embric and Aine and Kasni. But then they would have stopped her.
She reached the estate and after showing the contents of her bag to the guards, she was allowed in. She was lead first to the queen to deliver the gloves she had requested, and when her interaction with Adeline was done, she was sent on her way.
On her way, yes, but she wasn't leaving. Instead she found herself roaming the halls of the estate, lead by an unknown, redheaded child that looked to be even younger than herself. "I hope he's expecting you?" The kid remarked without turning to look at her.
"I...don't believe he is," she muttered.
"Huh," she could practically feel the smile spreading across his face, though she could only see the back of his head. "Should be fun, then."
