Now that the soldiers stationed in Coheed and Cambria had been called home to Nevermere and an announcement was made to incentivize the signing up of new recruits, there was no denying that war was just on the horizon. Many of the younger soldiers had never ventured past the outskirts of Skia, and while all had at one time during their mandatory six years been trained to arrange their packs, set up camps, organize themselves, and prepare for traveling in the open or wilderness, they had never been forced to put this into actual practice.
The next couple of nights were meant to test them in that way, and the physical training in between wouldn't hurt, either. It would be made clear that this was not meant to be a fun camping trip, but a real test of their abilities.
With everyone carrying heavy packs on their backs, a large group (100-150) of both experienced and inexperienced soldiers were marched through Skia, away from Rainecourt castle and the luxury of the barracks and the mess hall, and toward the dense forest on the southern outskirts. Horses pulling wagons of enough supplies for one day were included for further training purposes, as on the second day soldiers would have to supply themselves (by way of hunting or scavenging, whether by traditional or magical methods).
Soldiers would be expected to navigate themselves through the woodlands via map and compass, decide on when and where to settle camp, set up camp, divide provisions, and set up guard rotations. In the morning they would pack up and repeat the process, though on the second day provisions would be short and soldiers would need to be assigned for food and water gathering. On the third morning, they would return to Rainecourt castle and the next group of soldiers would be taken. Those leading the soldiers, Warren Woodwick and Regan Lassiter, would intervene only when necessary to ensure the soldiers competence in the field.
After leaving the castle, they entered the woodlands with half a day ahead of them. Soldiers took turns guiding the group deeper into the forest. As sunlight began to dwindle, a spot suitable for camp was chosen and the soldiers would begin setting up their tents, lighting their fires, assigning tasks, and retrieving their nightly provisions of food and water.
Thread begins during the first night, with soldiers setting up camp.
