The peace that formerly reigned in Terra Nova has eroded, now little more than a memory. War ravages the continent. Disputes divide kingdoms; ideals divide families. The quest for power consumes absolutely and indiscriminately. None are immune to its allure.
Who will rise and who will fall? Only time—and ambition—will tell.

5 whole years of Heir Apparent goodness! When I started the site, I knew I was hunkering down for the long haul, but I never could have predicted the numerous twists and turns this roleplay site has seen. Hundreds of plots, characters, and members have come and gone, all leaving marks on the site. I am so very thankful for those who have invested. Because you keep coming back, keep getting on, and keep writing, Heir Apparent has the legacy it does today. Three cheers to us!

[For @aydin ]
Elena had decided today that getting out into the streets was not enough. She wanted some space to think, some peace and quiet away from all the hustle and bustle that was her day to day life as Queen. So she moved beyond the estate, past the streets, and out into the wilderness. Finding a grove of trees she moved inside them, wandering at a slow and relaxed pace, enjoying the calm that was nature.
She had never been around so much open space much in the past. Even in Lorendale she rarely ventured beyond the city, enjoying the social life far too much to crave anything else. Perhaps she had changed more than she thought. She thought about all the connections she'd made in the past and missed each one. Victor had been something special, she opened she'd see him again one day. She wondered what had happened to the Coheed prisoner she had helped to escape. There had been girls too here and there. She really did miss home.
She halted in her steps when she saw a moment in the distance and realized that it was a dresmondi with a bow who looked like they were hunting. Moving slightly behind a tree, she remained still and silent as she observed the hunter with curiosity.
Aydin was crouched behing a little hill covered in grass. It was important to keep as still as possible. A small deer was standing still, ears perked up, looking around slowly. The animal felt watched and Aydin would have to wait until it was more at ease before they'd make a move. After a few minutes, the deer lowered its head to drink from a small pond. Slowly and silently, the Dresmondi reached behind her back, grabbing an arrow from the quiver, and putting it on her bow. Then, again with slow movements, they drew the string of the arrow back. It was more difficult to aim in a crouched position than it was in a standing position, but Aydin had been hunting all her life and was very skilled at it. Almost without a sound, the arrow was released from the bow. It pierced through the air, smoothly, and hit the deer in the chest, between the front paws, where the heart was located. The deer fell to the ground, kicking up some dust and sand.
Aydin jumped up, excited that it worked out like they had hoped. Ember jumped from her shoulder onto the ground and ran ahead of her, faster than she could, and jumped on top of the deer. We did it! The person laughed and knelt down to check if the animal was in fact dead. "You're right, we're eating good tonight." The little dyr climbed up her leg and reclaimed its position on her shoulder. Well, you are. I need some bugs. She sighed, rolling her eyes. "I know, I know."
They then took the deer by its legs and started dragging it towards the a grove of trees, hoping to hide it here while she was out hunting some more.

Elena watched in silent interest as the dresmondi hunted her prey. She hit her mark perfectly and Elena was surprised to see their dyr turn out to be a tiny little creature. She would have guessed some sort of predator based on the hunting even though she'd learned plenty of time that the form of the dyr doesn't always dictate much about the person. Just look at Eirwen and her rooster.
As they started to pull the deer along the ground, Elena moved out from behind the tree and walked over towards them. "Impressive aim you've got there," she commented with a smile. "That's quite the catch."
Even though Ember had excellent hearing, the little creature hadn't warned her that a member of the Eldouir family was nearby. Aydin jumped up a bit when she registered the sound of the woman's movement and voice. The little hairs on the back of their neck stood upright and her hand had automatically made its way over to the dagger on her belt, but when her eyes fell upon the redhead, she quickly removed her hand from the weapon. She bowed slightly, looking down in order to not make too much eye contact with the former queen. It was always difficult to know how to behave around an Eldouir, especially if you weren't sure what mood you caught them in. The smile did however put the Dresmondi at ease a bit. "Thank you, ma'am", they replied. "I got real lucky. It's been a while since I've seen a deer this size roaming around the plains, especially since it's still a young 'un." They looked at the prey for a moment before returning their gaze to Elena. "My apologies, I didn't see you before, and Ember apparently didn't feel like telling me there was a royalty nearby." She glared a bit at the animal on her shoulder. Don't blame me! he squeaked.

Elena wondered if prey like this were typically this scarce or if animals had started to change their routines now that the Eldouirs had arrived and for the first time in Dresmond history, set up a location that was never meant to be temporarily used as the wagons moved through the land. It made sense it might affect the wildlife, the question was how much.
As Queen, she would have appreciated a 'your majesty' somewhere in there but she wasn't feeling particularly nitpicky. Had it been Adeline, Elena would have imagined her fellow Queen would said something. She waved her hand in dismissal at the apology. "I don't expect every soul to be constantly on the lookout for the chance that an Eldouir is around. Especially out here," she commented. "What are your plans for the deer," she inquired.

Aydin smiled cautiously, even though the queen's words were reassuring. "Nevertheless, our apologies, your majesty", they added as if they had been able to read the redhead's mind.
Queen Elena inquired about the prey. For a moment Aydin didn't want to tell her in fear of her claiming the deer. "I'd leave it here for a bit to hunt some more rabbits and then bring it back to my wagon to skin. After that, I'd brine most of it and eat the rest."

"Hmmm," Elena hummed thoughtful as she looked at the deer before she turned her gaze back to the dresmondi. "And do you typically save it for yourself or do you share such a meal with others?" she asked, her eyes boring into Aydin's as if she would be able to tell if they were lying.
There was nothing in Elena's face that betrayed what she was thinking or why she was asking. It was a mask of mystery and risk. What was it that she wanted to hear?
Wary of the question, Aydin blinked a few times before answering the queen. "It depends", they answered with a slightly tense jaw. "If it's brined, I can keep it for a while. Sometimes I share, or sell it. Hard to know who is worthy of sharing these days." She wondered why the queen inquired about her plans with the deer. Was she planning on claiming it? Aydin's hairs on her neck stood up.

Elena nodded thoughtfully. She was clearly resourceful and she lived in a way that would benefit her the most. Sometimes it was offering the kindness of sharing. Other times it was worth it to ask for payment in exchange. Or she would simply keep it for herself, making sure she could survive without the assistance of others. Resourceful. Wise. ...and quite pretty too.
She did not make a comment about what she thought of the girl's plans for the animal. "You said you weren't done hunting?" she asked, as the girl had mentioned leaving the animal here to go continue her hunt of smaller game. "Might I accompany you?" she asked. "Or if you're finished I could help you take the deer back to your wagon?"
The last thing she had expected was for the queen to ask if she could accompany her, or help her with the deer. "Of course, your majesty." Ember snuggled a little closer to her neck.
"Are you sure this is a good idea?"
It's alright, Ember. Don't worry. Saying no would be more dangerous, I think.
The jerboa didn't reply but knew she was right. So Aydin looked at the deer once more before looking at Elena again. "If we're lucky, we may find another deer, unless you were thinking of something specific to catch?"

The dresmondi agreed to her company and if she was afraid she didn't show it in her face. Elena appreciated that. It wasn't always the case. She remembered the girl she'd met not that long ago who had clearly wanted nothing to do with her. She'd ended up giving her a bag of food anyway. And could she blame any of them with the way they'd been treated thus far? Could Elena do anything to improve things? She hoped so but though she was Queen she was not the God that Hiram had appointed himself.
"To be honest, I know very little of the wildlife here. I trust your good senses," she said with a little smile. "And don't worry, I'm very quiet," she added.
Aydin was still weary of the queen, but appreciated her kindness. It contradicted what they had always heard about the Eldouir, do she still treaded carefully. The Fresmondi returned the smile and nodded. "Let us try to find another deer then, your majesty." Aydin would turn around and return to the open area, away from the trees, so she could watch the brim of the woods to see if there was movement that would indicate the presence of an animal.

It was a successful day of hunting. Elena was quiet, as she has promised, and proved to be fairly helpful with the hunting too. Though her biggest asset of the day was using her telekinesis to carry all they had caught back to where Aydin would be able to move forward with the next step. Perhaps to the surprise of the Dresmondi, Elena asked for none of it for herself and departed from them with grace and a gentleness that was rarely seen with the Eldouir.
