The peace that formerly reigned in Terra Nova has eroded, now little more than a memory. War ravages the continent. Disputes divide kingdoms; ideals divide families. The quest for power consumes absolutely and indiscriminately. None are immune to its allure.
Who will rise and who will fall? Only time—and ambition—will tell.

This fall and winter was a period of low activity for the site, but even so, the Dresmond board has continued to simmer with excitement. This kingdom has moved from distant side dish to a dramatic main course in the world of Terra Nova. A big shout out to members Heather, Nix, and Darkest whose high activity has helped lead it through a renaissance into a new era!
It was perhaps too chilly to be painting outdoors, but Alaric was never one to shirk his work for the sake of comfort. As long as the paints didn't freeze, he would be out and about completing his commissions and personal projects. His livelihood depended on it. Most of his patrons would not take frostbite as a reason for a late project.
Because of the cold, the town square was not as crowded as it normally would be at that hour of the day, and Alaric thanked the lucky feather in his hat for the lack of people. There was nothing more tedious than trying to paint when people kept bumping into his freshly painted canvas, after all! He could at least work in peace while he got the foundations of the piece going.
When he got to a good stopping point, he set his brush down and took a few steps back from the painting and studied it to see what needed doing as he blew warm air onto his fingers.

Coraline was heading home from the palace when she decided that the cure for such chilly, gloomy weather was fresh flowers. She took her steps into the market and found a vendor that had a brilliant room made entirely of windows that allowed them to grow things even when they were out of season. She had been buy a bouquet from them at least once a week for years and knew the gardener well.
With a bouquet of brightly colored flowers cradled in her arms she passed through the town square on her way home. It was then that she noticed a man painting. Curiously she stepped up behind him and watched him silently for a while, intentionally staying out of his line of sight so she wouldn't be a distraction.
It was beautiful work, truly, and in the spite of the cold she couldn't help lingering longer than she had intended just to watch him. When after a while he stood up to look back at his progress, Coraline spoke from behind him. "You're very talented," she said melodically.

The painting was missing something...perhaps the colors were too muted. Maybe he should use a more daring shade of red? Or a brighter blue? He did just purchase this lovely blue pigment that he was dying to use...but ah, one can't waste an expensive pigment on whimsey alone! Perhaps a splash of...ah, a little purple in the shadows would do just the trick, he had decided when a woman complimented his painting.
Although he was not expecting anyone to speak to him while he was working, the sound of the woman's voice did not make Alaric jump or show any visible signs of surprise. Instead he turned around and flashed the woman a dazzling smile, "Thank you, My Lady," he gave her an exaggerated, courtly bow, removing his hat and sweeping it to his chest as he did so, "Although it is not yet finished."
He straightened up from his bow, donning his hat again and made a quick study of the woman. Very lovely, he decided, loving the way the brightness and life of the flowers she held contrasted with the dead winter world around her. He would have thought she looked like a milkmaid or some other women's profession that was sounded just as sweet if it were not for the quality of her clothes.
"I hope you don't find my question too forward, My Lady, but you are quite lovely," he declared, "Has anyone ever had the honor of painting your portrait?"

Coraline found his flourish to be quite charming and as she caught sight of his face for the first time, she was only further charmed. He was quite handsome. Given his apparel she could guess he was a commoner but Coraline certainly wasn't one to judge on titles alone. He seemed kind. She smiled as he thanked her.
When he complimented her appearance she couldn't stop the pink that flushed over her cheeks. "Oh, I, um-, no. I've never had one done." She had thought about it of course but as she and Augustus had never married, then had never even had a family portrait done.

“Indeed, Lady?” Alaric reeled back as if shocked, “How could any artist of any talent miss an opportunity to to immortalize your beauty on the canvas, to freeze in time the brilliance of your smile, and the sparkle in your eyes,” he smiled rakishly, “the lovely shade of the pink on your cheeks when you blush. Any portrait that holds your likeness will surely be a masterpiece coveted by all who gaze upon it.”
He made a fist and raised it to his mouth, clearing his throat as if he were embarrassed, “But I am being forward, my lady, and I’ve not even introduced myself!” He put his hand to his heart, “I am Alaric Melbourne, artist extraordinaire. May I have the pleasure of knowing your name, Lady?”

My oh my! What beautiful words! She could not remember the last time she had been so flattered and her cheeks turned an even deeper pink at his lovely praises. "It seems you are artist with your speech as much as paint on a canvas, Sir Melbourne," she told him, her heart fluttering a bit as warmth spread through her skin as the younger man's words repeated themselves in her mind.
"I'm Coraline Gray," she introduced herself with no title and a sweet smile. "Are you usually so flattering of your potential clientele?" she asked with a lilting tone to her melodic voice.

“You flatter me, my lady,” he said cheerfully, “But without poetry of the eyes,” he gestured to his painting then pointed at his mouth, “And poetry of the lips, where would we be?" he held his arms out on either side of him as if questioning her, "In a pit as dull and grey as Nevermere surely.”
“Lovely to meet you, Ms. Gray,” he thought she had a very tempting smile. Nearly as tempting as her laugh, “And I only complement the beautiful ones.”

Coraline decided that she could easily sit and listen to Alaric speak all day and never get bored. He was absolutely delightful and she was in no rush to depart from him. She blushed again as he complimented her further. "Well, then tell me, Alaric..." she used his first name, nearly purring it. "How much do you charge for a portrait then?" She couldn't help but desperately want to see how he'd capture her on canvas.

He caught her interest if he was judging her tone correctly, and he was rarely wrong in these things. His smile shifted into something a little warmer than his customary sunny grin.
“There is my standard commission fee, Sweet Coraline,” he also chose to drop the formalities, “But for you, I would do it for a fraction of the price. Immortalizing your beauty would be payment enough.”

Such flattery. It had been a while since she'd received attentions like this from anyone besides Augustus and that was a...complicated situation. Could anyone really blame her from letting herself enjoy it. "Please, I would never dream of insulting an artist by not paying their full fee. Especially one as talented as yourself," she told him, her voice soft and sweet.
"Do you have a studio I should come by or perhaps you would like to come to my home?" she asked, unsure where he usually preferred to do portraits.

Alaric kept up his grin that was slowly shifting further away form sunny and closer to smoldering, “And I would never insult a beautiful lady by charging her when I have the honor of immortalizing her on canvas,” he said, “But if it will make you feel more at ease, my lady, I will not say no to sharing a drink with you.”
“I do have a studio we can use for your portrait, but if you are more comfortable being painted in your own home, I can bring my supplies there instead,” he raised his eyebrows charmingly, “I am quite flexible, you see.”

They were at an impasse it seemed in terms of payment but after a moment's thought, Coraline decided that a drink seemed sufficient, at least for now. Sharing a drink with a man was not something she'd done in quite some time. Besides, what was the harm in a little drink and nice company. "Alright," she said after a beat. "A drink it is then."
As far as location...there was certainly part of her that was interested in inviting him to her home. But she was an unwed woman with a questionable history already and she could only imagine the gossip if she were to allow this young man into her home alone. Though alone would be how she preferred it...no, it seemed safer to go to his studio. Besides, she was curious to see it. "Your studio sound lovely," she said. "Then you won't have to haul everything around anyway." It wasn't only argument for her case but it would suffice for now. "Is your studio fairly private or are there a lot of people coming and going? I could imagine that would be...distracting...for you I mean." And for herself.

Alaric’s smile did not falter, “Then we shall have your portrait done in my studio, my lady,” he said, “I’m sure you will find it very comfortable. It is small, but cozy, and very private,” Alaric was already thinking of how he’d set up the backdrop, just what sort of pose he’d have her start in. Ah, his lucky feather had been well at work again. He would have given it a little tap had Coraline not still been present, “It will be private enough that I can paint you uninterrupted for as long as you desire.”

Coraline felt her skin growing warm as he spoke and she mentally chided herself for the thoughts that were intruding upon her mind and chided herself when the thoughts were not exactly unwelcomed. She smiled again and nodded. "I am looking forward to it then, Mr. Melbourne. Just tell me when and where and I will make myself available."

She blushed, and Alaric thought it only made her more beautiful. A true subject to capture on canvas. A subject to study very closely to insure that all the details would be accounted for. A very, very close inspection.
“As am I, my lady,” his charming smile got a little bigger, “I am available at your earliest convenience…would two days from now be agreeable, Coraline?”
