The peace that formerly reigned in Terra Nova has eroded, now little more than a memory. War ravages the continent. Disputes divide kingdoms; ideals divide families. The quest for power consumes absolutely and indiscriminately. None are immune to its allure.
Who will rise and who will fall? Only time—and ambition—will tell.

5 whole years of Heir Apparent goodness! When I started the site, I knew I was hunkering down for the long haul, but I never could have predicted the numerous twists and turns this roleplay site has seen. Hundreds of plots, characters, and members have come and gone, all leaving marks on the site. I am so very thankful for those who have invested. Because you keep coming back, keep getting on, and keep writing, Heir Apparent has the legacy it does today. Three cheers to us!

[ for @katerina ]
Nevermere’s soldiers were currently being assembled in the training yard, Hadrian was expecting to speak to one witch in particular before he addressed the group. The commander hadn’t slept. He’d stopped only long enough to change from his ball regalia into something more suitable for the occasion. Now, Hadrian had donned his armor. As if he this moment was prepared to lead his forces into battle.
That’s what they needed to be reminded of. Being a soldier was about more than dressing up in Nevermerean blues and strapping a sword to your hip. You had to be more. All of them did.
Hadrian was in his office, barking orders at a lieutenant who looked like he was about ready to piss himself. The door was open, so Katerina—if she arrived—would be able to enter without trouble.
Kat hadn't yet been home and thus had no read the note from her husband or realized he was dead. Instead she had stayed with her siblings, her children already there, and just passed out for the night. She was exhausted, mentally and was having some actual emotions for others for the first time in a while. It was so tiresome and she wasn't sure how people did it all the time.
All the same she arose, still off but not planning to show it and dressed in her military attire. A meeting with the Lord Commander. She never knew what to expect from these. Usually trouble, she wasn't exactly a star player. But she made her way with haste, no plans to be late to her own scolding.
As Kat walked through the military wing, yesterdays events rolled around in her head. She was going to have to check on Octavius later, and she just hoped he wasn't going to blame this on himself anymore. Being allowed in she dipped into a bow and stood at attention, waiting.

Hadrian received Katerina’s bow with a nod. He looked her over, eyes softening in a way that was almost fatherly. For a moment, he thought to ask how she was doing, given the events of last night. Octavius was her partner, and Hadrian knew how strong that bond had to be. This was rattling for all of them, but for Katerina…
Hadrian decided against it. He’d let his pause and expression be enough. His face changed back to an expression of efficiency.
“I must commend you on your performance and the maze and in the throne room. The latter in particular. I wish we had more time to breathe but unfortunately do not. So, I must ask you,” Hadrian’s brow furrowed, “The portals. What you are able to do…I’ve never seen a witch conjure one before. How does it work?”
Kat looked up from her bow as Hadrian's face changed into one of efficiency, catching the end of a different look. Pity? Concern? The soldier wasn't sure but was glad that he pivoted to the important matters rather than going on about emotions or something just as useless.
But apparently she wasn't in trouble. The Lord Commander was just nosy. Fair enough, she had expected it eventually, although she wasn't quite sure how he had seen the portal in the short but complete darkness. But long ago she had stopped questioning how superiors knew things, they always did, and fighting it was usually worse.
"I can create a portal to anywhere I can visualize in my mind." So far she had just practiced on places she had been, but it was the visualization that was the key, that had been clear in her trial runs with @warren
Taking a breath she cracked her knuckles. "It's new to me so I'm still exploring all parts of it." She wouldn't admit she was still in rudimentary stages, but it was just the beginning, and she had a lot more to learn.

Though the rest of Hadrian’s expression did not change, his eyes lit as if he were a child being offered a particularly gracious gift. He’d seen what she could do in the throne room, but this was more than he could have imagined. He paused for a moment, wheels turning in his mind, before continuing on to his reason for summoning her.
“You’re long overdue for a promotion. Effective immediately you will be granted the rank of officer, but that won’t necessarily matter. You’ll answer to me alone and train within the ranger program. I will bring in trainers as necessary to work on individual skills. The expectation is that you will be able to operate independently within enemy territory. That will mean danger, but if you’re willing…”
Hadrian offered her the choice. He couldn’t afford to pour so many resources into a soldier that was not wholeheartedly committed to the task.
Kat couldn't help but raise an eyebrow as Hadrian mentioned she was long overdue for a promotion. That seemed far from the truth, but then again, it wasn't like he had a lot of options. Who they had all thought was one of the best pairs had just turned Nevermere on it's head in one night. But the promotion soon became the least of her concerns as he continued.
The ranger program. The fuck was the ranger program? Kat hadn't put a lot of effort into learning how she could climb in the military, mostly because she assumed her history and background would prevent it. But there were a lot of words that caught her attention. Independent being the most important. "Independently?" She thought her question clear enough giving she was currently a paired witch, but she would clarify if the Lord Commander didn't connect the dots.

“Private Wulfbrand is not being considered for the program at this time,” Hadrian said, deciding to leave it at that. What happened to Octavius wasn’t his fault, but right or wrong, his unwitting involvement in the boy’s death had made him a complicated figure. One he wasn’t going to elevate in a hurry.
Besides, he thought, it had now been made clear that witches could turn into werewolves themselves. Hadrian didn’t understand how yet, but if he could find a way to transfer the curse to other witches…what did they need a male pair for?
So Octavius would be left behind. At the beginning of their partnership, Kat had seen him as an expendable shield, it's how it was supposed to work. But he was, in fact, a person, who wasn't entirely awful. Did that mean she was willing to turn down a chance to further herself and her magic?
"Thank you for considering me Lord Commander, I gladly accept." No man or woman would be enough to keep her from her ambitions. Not anymore. She had learned the hard way that eventually, if you chose people, they would let you down. So instead she chose herself, not knowing her children were currently without a father and probably needed their mother.

Hadrian let the touch of a smile pull at the corner of his mouth.
“Good. You’ll start first thing tomorrow. In the meantime…” Hadrian did soften for a moment, “Take the day. I’m sure you have matters to attend to. Your time will be more scarce from this point forward..” It had the intonation of an order, for it was one.
Kat nodded her head, bowing again. "Thank you Lord Commander." She really did have a lot to do. Boy if only she knew it. First thing first was to talk with Octavius. She wasn't going to leave him high and dry despite the possible awkwardness of the conversation.
But either way she was leaving the office with a new sense of purpose. She was going to be a ranger, whatever that entailed, and it was an exciting prospect. Improve her skills, be a special part of the Nevermere army. One that seemed to match her goals a little more than any paired program ever could.
