The peace that formerly reigned in Terra Nova has eroded, now little more than a memory. War ravages the continent. Disputes divide kingdoms; ideals divide families. The quest for power consumes absolutely and indiscriminately. None are immune to its allure.
Who will rise and who will fall? Only time—and ambition—will tell.

5 whole years of Heir Apparent goodness! When I started the site, I knew I was hunkering down for the long haul, but I never could have predicted the numerous twists and turns this roleplay site has seen. Hundreds of plots, characters, and members have come and gone, all leaving marks on the site. I am so very thankful for those who have invested. Because you keep coming back, keep getting on, and keep writing, Heir Apparent has the legacy it does today. Three cheers to us!
Keir hadn't slept, hadn't left the palace. What had happened at the ball was a harsh blemish now: mistrust of the Witches was fairly damaging. He had just left checking on Val, he had told her about her Father's addressing of what happened and allowed her to be took home. She was to stay off her feet and rest, absolutely no worrying about military issues for now. Recovery was her primary objective if she was given an order.
The Delaney had other ideas, he wanted to speak with Hadrian about perhaps reassignment, he was ready to step away from the Royal Guard and serve the Kingdom as a whole. He had strict Delaney principles and he felt if the soldiers needed a tighter grip in discipline he was more than capable. He would approach the Commander's door and let it be known he was here to speak with Hadrian.

When Hadrian was told who was at the door, he granted him entry without hesitation. He knew Valeria was in the infirmary—primarily as a precaution. Unfortunately, he hadn’t been able to visit, though he was sure she understood. These weren’t times when he could afford personal privileges.
He assumed Keir had arrived to give the commander an update on Valeria. Hadrian couldn’t imagine any other reason. When Keir entered, he greeted him with a strained smile. He was a nice boy, but he had Hadrian had never really developed a connection with one another. But he treated Valeria well, and that was enough.

Keir still the extreme militant minded, molded, and disciplined saw Commander Hadrian as none other than his superior despite being his technical Father-in-law. It was a respect thing and a honor thing, so Keir hoped Hadrian never took offense to Keir stiff demeanor.
"Thank you for seeing me Commander, with recent events I know your time is valuable so I won't take up to much of it," Keir dived in, "First, Val is set to be released soon she's banged up and bruised but they believe the baby is fine. She saw a great deal and I think she'll be more or less affected mentally, but she's tough, just wanted to give you that update," he took a deep breath, "I know I approached you before about this but given recent events, I feel I need to approach the subject again: I'd like to step away from the Royal Guard and back into full active service as a soldier. I'm not asking for anything special, I'll prove my worth, but as a Delaney Sir I feel I offer the absolute discipline you ask for...."

Hadrian was set to see her later and was glad to hear that she was in good condition—not that he had doubted the efforts of Nevermere’s finest healers. He nodded once in acknowledgment, though the relief did show through ever so slightly on his features.
As for the request…perhaps it should come as a surprise, but somehow it didn’t. Kier had asked him before—before his courting Valeria and their subsequent marriage—but he’d let the request drift away. Perhaps it had been selfishness on his part to leave the matter alone. To be a member of the King’s Guard was prestigious and, given the current war on the horizon, relatively safe.
But separating his personal feelings, Hadrian assessed the validity of Keir’s argument. He was right.
“You’d start out as a private again,” Hadrian said, speaking slowly, “That would mean taking orders. Lots of hard work. But…” He sighed, “You’d serve us well. There’s no doubt about that.”

Keir had always figured the original request of transfer was ignored because of Uncle Logan and the situation around his Uncle stepping away as Commander. When Hadrian seemingly agreed Keir was relieved.
"Yes sir, I understand and if you are giving me permission I'll start immediately as Private. You just tell me who to report to and I'll be there," Keir replied again confirming he himself was ready to rejoin the military, "I will tell Valeria also tonight. That will be the right thing to do," Keir didn't ask as a question but the Commander would see the underlining question in the statement, would it be the right thing to do and tell her now?

Hadrian paused, debating whether to tell Keir his own piece of news before Valeria did, finally deciding honesty was the best policy.
“I asked her to resign from the military earlier this afternoon. She agreed.” Hadrian let the statement stand alone, waiting for Keir’s reaction. Hadrian, of course, had reasons he could launch into. A whole argument of why this was the right thing—for everyone.

"Oh?" and though his response was short, unorthodox a relief washed over Keir and he tried his best to recover, "Sorry, sir that wasn't the correct response. Thank you," Keir admitted, "I couldn't have asked her to do that and don't think I haven't thought about asking her Commander because I have...with things going the way they are, keeping her as far away from it..I appreciate that," Keir couldn't have honestly asked or told Valeria to resign from service she certainly would have told him (Keir) no as kindly as she could.

Hadrian nodded, glad that Keir saw the wisdom of the request. Hadrian had every confidence that the military would recover from this setback, but as for his own niece…well, some risks just weren’t worth taking.
“She agreed,” Hadrian said with a sigh, “Reluctantly, but she agreed. Valeria is a woman that values purpose and service, so as long as she can find a new purpose—another way to serve—I think she’ll be just fine.”

Knowing Val had agreed washed away every bit of stress set in his shoulders, "That's great sir, really great and I'm sure you'll find her something with equally good purpose," Keir didn't doubt the Commander would find something good for Val to do especially with the delivery of the baby approaching, "Is there anything else Commander? If not I'd like to collect my things and prepare to return to service."

“No, that will be all.”
Hadrian would dismiss Keir with a quick nod and then divert his attention to his other affairs. He hoped the boy was up for the task that lay ahead. Hadrian knew what it was to sacrifice as a soldier, as did Valeria. But enduring it personally was different than having suffering inflicted on someone you loved. The war ahead would no doubt require them to suffer. Hadrian only hoped that Keir and Vall—and all of them—were ready.
