The peace that formerly reigned in Terra Nova has eroded, now little more than a memory. War ravages the continent. Disputes divide kingdoms; ideals divide families. The quest for power consumes absolutely and indiscriminately. None are immune to its allure.
Who will rise and who will fall? Only time—and ambition—will tell.

Frederick had seen Rosamere a few times since he had confessed his feelings for her. She said she still wanted to be friends with him and though it hurt his heart to not be able to at least try to court her, he couldn’t resist spending time with her. She’d eventually told him who she was betrothed to and though he asked her a few questions he could handle digging too deep into her relationship with the ma. It hurt too much.
However, when he heard that Fabian had been among those who had gone to Lorendale Fred had dropped everything to rush to see Rosamere. He was told she was in the garden behind the bushes and Fred hurried to her side, his hands full of things.
“Rosa, I just heard about Fabian leaving. I was worried about you might be handling it. Are you alright?” My darling, sweet Rosa, apple of my eye.

Rosamere was sitting in her favorite garden, reading the quick letter that Fabian had sent before he was off to Lorendale. These last two weeks had been a bit of a whirlwind of emotions from all over the spectrum. She'd been getting to know Fabian better, had started to care for him a bit, only for another situation to crop up out of nowhere to sweep that out from underneath he once again. The letter was sweet and so was the enclosed ring, but the circumstances around it made it all the more bittersweet.
Her head shot up as she heard someone enter the garden and she curled the ring into her hand, surprised that anyone was coming to this garden. When she saw who it was, she was confused until he told her why he was here. Her eyes were prickling and misty but she hadn't actually cried. "I... don't know."
At the look on her face and her reply Fred closed the distance between them, concern in his eyes. “I’m sure he’s going to be fine.” He hoped he wasn’t. He hoped he died so that Fred could marry Rosa instead.
…. That was a terrible thing to think. He was ashamed to have thought it.
“I brought you some things to help you feel better,” he said, showing her his arm full of things, most in a basket. There were her favorite pastries from a nearby bakery, more flowers in bright and happy colors, several potion ingredients- ones that he knew she used the most often, three new scarves in various colors, and a very soft blanket.

Rosamere slid the ring into the pouch it was sent in and slipped it into a hidden pocket she'd made, something she'd put in several of her dresses actually. She needed to think on that for a minute because it was a sweet ring and she liked it but she didn't want to rub that in Frederick's face right now. Goddess, he really was just sweet and she hated that for a moment she wished that his last name wasn't Delaney so that she could have had a chance with him before she mentally tossed that thought to the side.
"Thank you, Frederick." She gave him a warm but muted smile as she looked up at him before her eyes drifted to the basket. Her heart ached for a moment at the gesture. "You didn't have to do that, really." Because then it would only make her consider maybe disobeying her family for once and she couldn't do that.
Frederick's smile was eager and earnest. "Oh I know. It wasn't about the need to do anything, I just wanted to, Rosamere." Because I'd do anything for you. I would lay down in the snow in the path of a carriage just so you could walk across the road without your adorable little toes being frozen. "Because we're friends, right?" Just friends? Yes, it had to be just friends. Unless...? No, no. She said they had to be just friends. But look at her pretty pink lips. He had wanted to kiss those lips for years. Now he'd never get the chance. What a fool he'd been to have been too afraid to tell her how he felt earlier. Idiot. Idiot.

She gave him a grateful smile as set the letter to the side, thankful that she hadn't at least lost her friendship with him if nothing else. That probably would have been understandable but she would have regretted it immensely if he had decided to cut their friendship off as well.
"Thank you Fred, really. You're a wonderful person." She motioned to the area on the bench next to her. "You can sit if you'd like."
"Not as wonderful as you, but I try," he said with a humble shrug. Fred looked to the bench and sat down with a grin, looking up at her like a precious little puppy, a strand of his curly hair had fallen from the knot he had pulled it into and it brushed against his cheek. He patted the spot next to him.
"You can tell me how you're feeling, you know," he said, just happy to listen to her voice.

She shook her head with a slight grin as she curled one leg under her to get more comfortable. "Might need to agree to disagree on that one, Fred." When Rosamere looked up after she was settled, she noticed two things. One, her shifting had moved her a little closer to Fred. Two, a strand of his hair had fallen from the knot and she stared for a moment because she'd never seen him not completely put together before. And until her hand was brushing the strand back behind his ear, she hadn't even realized that she'd reached out at all.
She pulled her hand back the moment she realized what she did. "Sorry, I shouldn't have."
Fred was very aware of how close they ware as she sat beside him. He had never had a problem being the gentleman with her, never trying to take advantage of her in any way. Though in the past she was unaware of his feelings for her. While she had told him that they couldn't be together it had not changed his feelings in the slightest. He couldn't help how much he loved her. His heart skipped a beat as she reached for him, having not expected the action, and he stared into her beautiful face as she brushed back his hair.
Out of instinct his hand moved to capture hers as she moved to pull it back. The expression in his eyes for a moment was intense and adoring. Would he ever find someone even half as perfect for him as she was? He didn't think so. His gaze shifted as he smiled and squeezed her hand softly before releasing her. He gave a little shrug. "It's no big deal. Just hair, right?" But oh how he loved even that small touch.

Rosamere's gaze flickered up to Frederick's the moment he caught her had, her eyes watching his as the moment seemed to stretch. With her hand in his, not far from his face as she hadn't pulled it back that far before he caught it, she felt her breath catch at the look in his eyes and had her wondering if maybe he might kiss her. Which, that wasn't an appropriate thought at all to have, though technically she was only betrothed at the moment. But still. Her hands came down to rest in her lap.
"Yeah, just hair." Her eyes glanced down for a moment at his lips, barely a second, before bouncing back up.
Of course he saw the way her gazed dropped to his lips. It was quick but he was looking right at her and even more aware of her every move in this moment. It made him want to lean in to kiss her, his heart leaping in his chest. He really wanted to but he also loved her too much to do that to her. He didn't want to complicate her life or her marriage. He didn't want to do anything that she might feel she had to tell her betrothed about. Still...it was just a kiss and they weren't married yet.
He carefully reached out his hand, his fingers dragging along a beautiful dark tendril of her hair. He leaned a little bit closer to her, his heart racing. He wanted to ask her for a kiss, just one, just a memory that he could hold onto when she was a married woman and officially out of his grasp. But he couldn't do it. Damn him for being such a good person. Ben would have done it. But Fred's love for Rosamere was too strong to do that too her.
So he stayed where he was, his fingers playing with her hair, but not moving any closer. "See? Just hair," though he felt the tension in the air between them. It was likely one sided but he was okay with that. He could love her enough for the both of them.

Rosamere's gaze didn't leave Fred's, wondering if she was the only one feeling the tension as he leaned forward. Only to stop, even as he brushed his own fingers along a lock of her hair. There was a bubble of disappointment that he stopped because she hadn't wanted him to. She wanted him to lean in and kiss her, even if she'd never be able to again.
She bit her lip, feeling bold just for a moment. "But what if it wasn't?" Right now, she very much wanted to do something just for her, without having to consider her family just this once.
Her question had heat rushing into his cheeks, the tips of his ears turning a little red. His heart raced. So maybe the tension wasn't one sided after all. He leaned a little closer to her, his eyes moving from her down to her lips. He moved very slowly, slow enough that she could stop him at any moment. If she hadn't stopped him yet then when he got close enough he would brush his lips very softly against hers, not a kiss but a feather like touch.
He was pretty sure his heart had stopped beating for a moment. If she still hadn't stopped him he would press his lips to hers in a kiss, his hand moving from her hair to softly rest against her cheek.

Rosamere saw his gaze drop to her lips as he moved closer and she was sure that her heart was pounding in her chest, loud enough for Fred to hear it with ease. He was going to kiss her and it would take something monumental to make her stop him in this moment. When his lips touched hers, Rosamere's eyes fluttered shut and she could have sworn that her heart skipped several beats.
As much to stabilize herself as she leaned forward as it was an excuse to touch him, her hands left her lap. One to rest on his chest and the other on his shoulder. Very clearly not stopping him in anyway.
Goddess, Frederick was very much a temptation right now.
When she leaned more into him Fred felt his heart flutter. His thumb stroked her cheek ever so softly as they kissed. He didn’t move away. This may be their only chance to experience this together. She was not married yet and it was only a kiss, right? Harmless. This was just two people who cared about each other in their own ways, sharing a simple kiss.
The kiss itself was tender and affectionate. It took nothing, demanded nothing. He wasn’t kissing her to take something selfishly for himself. He was kissing her to give something to her, to show her in this small way how much he cared about her. Even if it was only once.
