The peace that formerly reigned in Terra Nova has eroded, now little more than a memory. War ravages the continent. Disputes divide kingdoms; ideals divide families. The quest for power consumes absolutely and indiscriminately. None are immune to its allure.
Who will rise and who will fall? Only time—and ambition—will tell.

This fall and winter was a period of low activity for the site, but even so, the Dresmond board has continued to simmer with excitement. This kingdom has moved from distant side dish to a dramatic main course in the world of Terra Nova. A big shout out to members Heather, Nix, and Darkest whose high activity has helped lead it through a renaissance into a new era!
The day was hot and steamy and, honestly, Rhynn had no idea why she'd left the house except that her sister was home and between her mother and her sister Rhynn couldn't handle it anymore. Both of them were preening over Rhynn with nonsense about how she should wear her hair or how they'd met a very handsome bachelor the other day that would be perfect for Rhynn. So she left because Raine was already out of the house and not there to save her. Ever since Raine turned sixteen she and her brother had been drifting apart. He was off doing who knows what far more often, leaving Rhynn behind. The realization stung a bit, though she supposed her brother had to go off and be a boy now and again. He'd grown up almost entirely with women his whole life so perhaps the newfound freedom was well deserved.
So she ended up in the town square with a pastry in hand and absolutely no plans. This too was as strange as the space between her and Raine. If Rhynn was not in school, she was usually volunteering or being told to get ready for some (usually dull) summer party or another. There were so many summer parties that at some point they all blurred together and she was convinced that it was just one endless night. Though currently it was broad daylight and Rhynn was wandering the town square looking at the vendors, her eyes catching on a rather lovely jewelry vendor. Her feet took her over of their own accord, her whole person drifting lazily in the summer heat. With nothing better to do, might as well buy something pretty...

Today was another day of Kiana forcing herself out of the House of the Blessed. Forcing herself to go to the marketplace and simply be among other people. Part of her hoped that if she continued coming back here, one day she would find the same enjoyment and joy that she once had. Another part of her simply wanted to see anything other than the patrons and the walls of the House.
How she ended up standing in front of the jewelry booth, she had no idea. But here she was, her eyes staring at a small display of wedding bands. She was idly spinning her engagement ring on her finger as she looked. She would never receive one of these bands to compliment her engagement ring.
She glanced at some bare chains hanging nearby. She could wear it on one of those as a necklace and still always have it with her. Always have him with her. But she looked away, unable to stomach the idea of removing the ring from her finger. She wasn't ready yet.

There were many pretty things on display, and Rhynn decided on a new pair of earrings that would match the new dress she'd recently purchased. Truth be told, she probably had at least ten pairs of earrings that would work perfectly well, but it was more fun to purchase new earrings. Whenever she bought so much that it no longer fit in her room, Rhynn would spend half an afternoon purging her closet of older clothes and donating them to those less fortunate. Given that Rhynn probably wore her clothes a handful of times before giving them away, people got some very nice clothes for absolutely nothing. This was how Rhynn justified her spending habit to herself, because she certainly did not need to justify it to anyone else. For all their differences, both Rhynn and her mother appreciated the luxury of never showing up to an event in the same outfit.
"I'll take these, please," Rhynn said to the woman behind the stall, handing over the earrings. Her eye caught on another woman browsing as well, and then she noticed the ring the woman twirled around her finger. "That's a lovely ring," she offered pleasantly, catching a glimpse of it, having absolutely no idea that that particular compliment was not good timing at all.

She wasn't quite sure how long she had stood there staring at the wedding bands, but no one had interrupted her, not even the booth owner to inquire about her making a purchase. But then a voice finally dragged her out of her internal wallowing and she looked up slowly, blinking away the glazed look in her eyes as she brought herself back to reality.
It took her a moment to process what the woman had said. She looked down at her ring, sadness once again clouding her face. "Thank you," she managed to say quietly, unable to really offer the woman more than that.

The woman behind the booth told Rhynn the total as she wrapped up the earrings. Rhynn barely counted the money she handed over, not entirely sure she hadn’t overpaid, but not particularly caring if she had. The booth keeper certainly didn’t say anything. Rhynn was distracted by the clearly sad “thank you” that the other woman gives her, and she was quiet for a moment, trying to figure out what she could possibly do. They were just two women at a jewelry booth, but Rhynn couldn’t just walk away. It wasn’t in her nature not to care. She cared a great deal for the hurting, regardless of just about everything else.
She reached out a hand to touch the woman gently on the arm. ”Do you want some company? she asked, voice soft and friendly. ”A walk? A drink? A pastry?” At the last offer she brandished her own almost finished pastry. A friendly offer with genuine intent.

She wouldn't shy away from the hand placed on her arm. She had received many of these same gentle hands, all looking to show support and care for her. But this woman was a total stranger to Kiana and the action had her looking back up to study the woman's face. She found nothing that indicated any ill will, just a stranger offering a kind gesture.
She thought for a moment before nodding slowly, the faintest of smiles crossing her face, "Sure. A pastry sounds lovely." She would follow along quietly until they reached the pastry stall and she had purchased one for herself and taken a bite. The sweetness soothed some of her sadness, enough that she looked back to the woman again, speaking a bit more confidently. "Are you always this kind to strangers?" A pause, then, "I'm Kiana, by the way."
