A lopsided grin split Zevran's face as Ber made his confusion known about the lack of kings or queens. He had expected it, had learned long ago that it was the point of Dresmond that confused the Nevermerans. They were so accustomed to being controlled and ruled over, they couldn't see it any other way.
He shrugged, "There is no need for them. The only type of leadership we had was one main driver per caravan, one to lead each caravan. They are elected by the caravan as a whole. And we had The One, who held our medallion, but that title no longer holds any meaning." He poked at his stew as he considered how to explain further to Ber. "There were four main caravans, each tasked with a responsibility per their elements."
Feeling like he was back in the woods speaking to Alys again, he ticked off on each finger as he listed the caravans. "The Adoi traveled our borders and were one of our warrior caravans. The Dijila were our other warrior caravan and they patrolled inside the kingdom with their caravan. Since they use water and ice, they also aided our farming caravan, the Kushti, by watering the land as they moved. The Kushti made sure the land was well maintained and that all caravans would have food wherever they traveled."
His grin turned into one of sadness as he recalled the last caravan. "Then there was the Rashai, my caravan. We were the only caravan that didn't travel constantly, but only because we mined the land and made armor, weapons, jewelry, and anything else needing smithing." He glanced up at Ber and shrugged again, "We would all meet up twice a year at our Conclave and trade and discuss issues, then go on our way again. Everyone contributed and everyone had all they needed. There was no need to be ruled by someone."
Then his mood soured completely, speaking on the Eldouir. "Yes, I learned recently that they came from Lorendale. And Lorendale never came to clean up their mess. They attacked all of our caravans and slaughtered our people until the rest surrendered or had fled. Those that surrendered were forced into this place they call Elderkeep, their version of a city. It's more like a prison. No one can leave and they... they are just so cruel."
