The peace that formerly reigned in Terra Nova has eroded, now little more than a memory. War ravages the continent. Disputes divide kingdoms; ideals divide families. The quest for power consumes absolutely and indiscriminately. None are immune to its allure.
Who will rise and who will fall? Only time—and ambition—will tell.

5 whole years of Heir Apparent goodness! When I started the site, I knew I was hunkering down for the long haul, but I never could have predicted the numerous twists and turns this roleplay site has seen. Hundreds of plots, characters, and members have come and gone, all leaving marks on the site. I am so very thankful for those who have invested. Because you keep coming back, keep getting on, and keep writing, Heir Apparent has the legacy it does today. Three cheers to us!
Alys wasn’t sure what burned her most in that moment, but what she knew was the moment her fingers sank into Regan and the curse took hold, everything hurt. Everything burned and the sound that would come from her was nothing but brutal pain that consumed her as she threw Regan from her as far as she could.
The next thing would be her rolling to try and hide her face and the most vital parts of her against the ground, burying them into the dirt as she scrambled through the agony to find the next thing she could to fight and claw her way away from the roar of the flames and the roar of her own. An incantation on her lips as burned claws started digging into the dirt and ripping at it the best she could, dirt extinguished fires. She knew that much from growing up, though it was possible it would do little to help with Regan’s own beast.
Cassian would be upon her in moments, if the incantation even took, a blast of water would leave her hands that were trying to soak the ground and extinguish what they could. But ultimately, the inhuman noise that would leave her at the pain of Cassian drawing her to his chest would be what rung through the forest and causing every bird to leave the area. Her vision swam, her teeth bared, and all she could pray for as she noticed the heat leaving her body, as she barely recognized Cassian’s scent close to her, was that her own werewolf healing could save some parts of her.

Regan's bones would remain bendable. However far Alys was able to toss her, her bones would wobble, springy as rubber. Regan's animal instincts had taken over entirely. She'd try to flail and try to struggle to her feet in a frenzy, but there was nothing to give her muscles strength. So, she'd be impeded in her movement like a flopping fish on the deck of a ship.
Alys would try to stop the flames, but Regan would keep fueling them. Her actions would try to quell Regan's magic that fed the fire and gave it life. She burned with such pleasure that nothing else mattered. Regan was a vicious dog that had been left off its leash; a beast who wielded its raw power without care or control. It wanted to consume; to finish the task it had started - no matter the cost.
It was the inhuman noise of pain from Alys that broke through the bloodlust. Regan's intention was not to kill the other witch. She only wanted her to yield so that Regan could take her place at Cassian's side as alpha female. She took Alys's shriek as a sign of defeat and dropped the flames that engulfed them. Regan did remain on fire as she swung her head to look at the pair. She was unwilling to fully let her guard down until the curse wore off.

The curse would remain for two minutes more, unless Alys chose to break it. Regan’s fire receded at her command, drawing back to her limp form, and what was left destruction and smoke.
Alys would find her werewolf form a gross imitation of the beautiful beast she’d been only seconds before. Most of her fur was gone, only patches here and there, mostly on her back or the back of her legs. Her skin was pink and red, pink where the burns were lesser, red where there was no skin left and just exposed flesh. Her burns would not kill her, but they would take time to heal and leave scars.
Regan, in comparison, had suffered slashes to the stomach and a scratch to the face. They were minimal inflictions, all a routine part of a wolf fight, enough to hurt and bleed but nothing too threatening.
At the sound of Alys’ cry Cassian reared back his head. With the fire taken away, he slowly lowered her to the ground, gently setting her there. His attention turned to Regan.
Feeling the earth beneath her only pulled another soft whimper from the werewolf, her charred skin burned her nose, the smell of burnt hair and skin filled the air. Her body involuntarily twitched and trembled, and while hot tears fell from her eyes down her snout, she would not call the curse off.
She wouldn't try and spring to her feet, instead, she simply looked towards where Regan laid in a heap on the ground. She was dangerous, she was a risk to them all, and it was more clear than ever. A risk to their pack, a risk to not only her but ultimately... she'd be a risk to Cassian, to her children, and Nevermere. She believed that in her gut, which is why her clawed hands curled in, not taking much pressure to break the pink and red skin of the burns. There as nothing more than her heavy breathing when she started chanting in her head, reaching through that other worlds and deciding that if her Terra Nova water wasn't enough... magic and summonings had to be.
The creature that would burst through the ground in front of Cassian was an almost blinding white, with a slithering body that moved swiftly with the hundreds of legs off its longer form. If either was to look hard enough, they'd notice it was almost translucent, but it quickly would move to wrap itself in a boa constructor like hold around Regan, but not to break her. No, Regan would notice that the temperature of the summoning burned... but not from heat. From the sheer magical icy hold it kept around her. 'Hold her there,' was the command, 'hold her and keep the flames in.' She'd have 2 minutes left of her first curse, and she was going to do whatever she could before she lost conscious from the pain that was sending waves through her body.

Regan’s body was still slack and wobbling, but the fire remained. The sound of the ice creature bursting through the ground would be enough to sound the alarm again and have Regan’s fire spring up again. Hellfire—fire that burned hotter than any non-magical flame. A violent power that she’d once again unleash on the charred clearing.
The closer the summoning came, the more intense the heat would become. If the creature was ice, then surely fire was its natural enemy. Regan wouldn’t waste her energy trying to move her pliable bones. All her concentration would be pushed into disintegrating the swiftly summoned creature with heat.

The creature, a quick summoning, was a long but skinny thing, about the size of a boa constrictor. Compared to the sizes of the wolves, it was a rather pitiable form. Regardless, it boldly obeyed its master and scurried towards its target, seeking to wrap Regan’s limp form in an inch embrace. Unfortunately, it would never even make it to its target. The roaring flames around Regan were all-consuming, and ice wasn’t the strongest opponent against fire. The creature squealed in pain as it was devoured by the flames.
Cassian looked towards Alys. Was this continuing? Both women were pathetic heaps on the ground. Was this battle of dominance not finished?
[ Same post order. Regan has 1 more reply in her current form and on her *following her bones will begin to harden. ]
Alys’ spotting vision only got worse. As her adrenaline started to waver, the pain only pushed past to take the lead. She was suddenly aware that everywhere hurt, even if fur and skin remained in small patches… it all blended together in blinding pain. She couldn’t help the noise that left her again, a small whimper for help… for Cassian, her muscle shaking below charred skin as she pressed her face to the ground. As if it would help.
She’d be out in seconds, the pain too much to bear in that moment as she lost consciousness. Though her body continued to tremble with twitches of pain, her breathing labored, and her teeth bared… as if she hadn’t quite given up the fight mentally though physically she had.

Regan's wolf did not have human desires. Its emotions were swallowed up by the power of instinct. She could smell burning flesh, yes, could sense Alys's pain. But most powerful of all was the pungent scent of weakness. The hell wolf did not delight in Alys's suffering, but neither did she feel remorse. Instead, Regan felt vindicated that her actions had been justified. She was the more powerful being; the one best equipped to protect and serve her alpha.
And that was all that mattered.
As the summoning was reduced to cinders, Regan's flames went out. The only light in the clearing now was the silver moonlight and the burning amber of the hellwolf's eyes. She stopped struggling to stand. She sank back onto her hindquarters and flattened against the ground, chin resting between her paws as she gazed at Cassian expectantly.

Cassian would have shifted back into his skin and used his ring to suppress Alys’ pain, but the fullness of the moon would not allow it. There was little he could do for her until the night was done except watch over her twitching form and keep it from further harm. He raised his attention to Regan and emitted a rumbling growl of warning. This was over now. She needed to understand that.
Immediately following his decree, however, he did begin to move towards Regan, seeking to recognize what she had accomplished.

Regan responded to Cassian's growl with a submissive hum. Her body started to take shape once again, bones snapping back into place. Even though she now had full range of motion, the hell wolf stayed low to the ground. As Cassian approached, her large ears raised up and her tail slowly started to swish back and forth on the ground.
The pendulum had swung. Her task accomplished, Regan was once again the mischievous creature eagerly offering its victory to her alpha. Her big amber eyes gazed up at Cassian with near-comedic devotion.

Had they been humans, this attack would have been uncalled for. Unnecessary. Wrong. They were allies, and to harm one another was a disservice to their king and country.
But they weren’t humans right now. They were animals. Beasts. Dark creatures of the night with base desires that raged against their human urges. The hierarchy of the pack had perhaps been ignorable to Alys, but it had been an itch for Regan. An itch she’d just scratched.
Everything had changed. The air about them had shifted. Alys had always been the alpha female, and now she was not. Now it was Regan.
A fury burned in Cassian. A desire. He closed the distance between them, and upon reaching her he lifted his face to the moon for a howl. This was a howl of her victory. An acknowledgement of what she now was.

Regan followed suit. She lifted her head, slithering up so her snout grazed against Cassian’s neck, and howled with animal joy. Whatever the human might have to say about what had just transpired was yet to be known. For now, the beast was more than happy to revel in its victory. When the howl died down Regan would nuzzle against Cassian’s neck—Alys’s blood still staining her teeth.

When the howl was finished the temptation to run was great, but ever the protective alpha, Cassian was resolved to remain in the vicinity to keep a watchful eye on Alys as she lay in her state. Should Regan desire it, he would encourage her to go and hunt, racing under the moon and stars, chasing down prey, relishing in the freedom of the change.
When the moon began to change, Cassian changed with it, and wasted no time on conversation besides what words were necessary to see to Alys.
