Rhedara had been running her fingers through her hair, checking for knots or spots where the braid may have still been woven together. She’d gathered her hair together, intending to slip the mass over one shoulder when Raff told her to stop. Her hands stopped mid-movement as she looked up at him curiously. His reason for telling her to stop had her cheeks heating. That had been unexpectedly sweet. Most of their verbal exchanges were delightfully playful and had a not-so-subtle ‘let’s go roll in the hay’ undertone—which she liked. But saying that she was beautiful when her hair was down gave her a different sort of pleasant fluttery feeling that had her smiling in response as she finished pulling her hair over her shoulder.
“Really?” she asked, no disbelief or sarcasm in the word. The compliment gave her a feminine pleasure that she was more than willing to bask in.
They headed over to where she assumed his sister was misbehaving. Somewhere along walk, Raff had grabbed her hand. She wasn’t sure if the hand holding was for the sake of holding hands because he wanted to or because he wanted to make sure he didn’t outpace her with those long legs of his. Either way, she gripped his big hand his her smaller one.
He stopped them a short ways from a nice looking house that had a small crowd of young teenage boys, and…the sight of the teenage girls told her exactly what was going on. She remembered some of the other girls she was with during training did stuff like this, though she never had a chance to participate. Not the worst thing Cady could be doing, she thought, but it clearly bugged Raff to no end. She could have smiled. Had he lived, would Tate have stalked her around like this to protect her from the ‘wicked ways’ of men? Maybe he did. She hadn’t been terribly young when the ocean dragged him off the boat, and it could have been possible that he’d done just that when he wasn’t expected to be out fishing.
She stayed where she was and watched him creep closer to the crowd. What was he doing? With how determined he was to get here, she’d half expected him to just storm over, break up the party, and drag Cady home…but he didn’t do that. He threw a rock at one of the boys with an accuracy that impressed her before he came back to where she was standing. He’d find her with her mouth covered as she tried not to laugh at the antics.
She responded to his malicious smile with an incredibly amused one of her own, “What are you doing?” She whispered.
