The peace that formerly reigned in Terra Nova has eroded, now little more than a memory. War ravages the continent. Disputes divide kingdoms; ideals divide families. The quest for power consumes absolutely and indiscriminately. None are immune to its allure.
Who will rise and who will fall? Only time—and ambition—will tell.

5 whole years of Heir Apparent goodness! When I started the site, I knew I was hunkering down for the long haul, but I never could have predicted the numerous twists and turns this roleplay site has seen. Hundreds of plots, characters, and members have come and gone, all leaving marks on the site. I am so very thankful for those who have invested. Because you keep coming back, keep getting on, and keep writing, Heir Apparent has the legacy it does today. Three cheers to us!
Warren's office wasn't really big enough to comfortably seat four men and one woman, and he would have simply brought them all to the mess hall had the information he was going to divulge to them not been sensitive. Instead, he would request that they gather in one of the meeting rooms in the palace. It was much too large for the group, but closed doors kept prying ears and eyes away and given his probation, it was better safe than sorry.
He had also invited Odina Ellis to join, though he was unsure if she'd come or not. It wasn't entirely necessary for her to be there, but it would make certain that everyone was on the same page. He could hardly make demands of a Princess of the kingdom, after all. He would arrive first and await the others before beginning.

Vesper was often, perhaps annoyingly, one of the first to arrive when she had something to observe. Her new role kept her very busy and sometimes she had to choose which things were the most important to observe as there was almost always more than one thing going on at once. She entered the room with the now familiar and near ominous sound of the step, thud, step, thud, step, thud of her false leg and took up her place in the corner of the room where she could see everyone and not be in the way.
Raff arrived a little early but he'd as yet, never been able to get there before the shadow, Delvaux. If things were this locked down, there had to be some interesting news coming through the ranks about to be shared. He adjusted his collar and entered quietly, nodding respectfully to the superior officer and stood at attention. Patiently he waited, knowing that if he was supposed to know something, he'd find out exactly when he should and not a moment before.

Odina was prompt upon her arrival a few moments behind Vesper Delvaux, dressed in her mixture of Nevermere elegance and Cambrian sultry, hair tied back tighlty. She offered Captain Woodwick a kind smile, "Captain, good to see you," she brushed a hand with matching polished nails across the man's arm, just a kind gesture she felt and didn't think much of it as she moved on. In her turn she noticed the woman, she had been heading to her corner with a thumping step, her blue eyes would wait for her to turn and acknowledge her presence with a small curtsey, there was a smirk or a kind smile given as well but that was a smidge of her own thing. Odina liked cute women.
The Princess came to stand beside the other arrival @raff offering the soldier a kind bow of her head. She stood at attention herself but her hands were relaxed in a gentle grasping of her hands in front of her waiting.
Cambria. Not Dresmond. Cambria. Why were they going to Cambria? If he had to go to there, why did it have to be with these people? The questions bounced around Ber’s mind as, quite unfamiliar with this part of the castle, he peered at each door that he passed. And where in the world was this— Oh, there it was.
As he stepped into the meeting room, not late but apparently one of the last to appear anyway, Ber’s first instinct was to turn toward the corner, where he would be able to sit in the back, listen to whatever @warren had to say, and hopefully be entirely ignored. When he made to do so, however, he found it already occupied by the woman whom he’d glimpsed - and heard - walking through the hallways of the military wing. Apparently, she was charged with watching people, which definitely wasn’t remotely disconcerting at all, and apparently, she would be watching this, too. Given his preference for avoiding scrutiny, Ber did not spend more time than necessary around Vesper Delvaux and her creepy, piercing eyes, and her stealing his corner did not endear her to him any further.
Well, he wasn’t about to fight her for it, so to some other part of the room, then. Admittedly, @raff standing at attention had Ber hesitating and wondering if he should do the same - especially with the inspector general lurking in the corner - so instead of heading for the seat furthest from Woodwick like he wanted, the soldier awkwardly stepped out of the way and to the side, lingering close to the wall. From there, he surveyed the rest of the room and its assembled occupants until his gaze found the one face he didn’t recognize.
Utterly nonplussed, Ber stared at the noblewoman, who seemed very out of place, for a long moment before looking around at the others. No one else seemed particularly concerned or confused by her presence. His gaze slid back to her. Who was she? Why was she here? And why was she dressed like she was attending some sort of ball rather than a briefing about their deployment?
With each person who entered, Warren would nod his head and greet them. Everyone except Odina. When she entered, just after Vesper, he would give her a full and proper bow and return her kind words. He did not allow his eyes to remain on her for long, but she was dressed as impressively as ever.
Shortly after Odina, the rest would arrive. Raff, then Ber, then Octavius. Everyone remained standing initially, and as he closed the door behind the last man, he looked over each of them. "As I'm sure you know, I've brought you all here to discuss our assignment in Cambria. Our goal there will be to remove the current governor and replace her with another. This, for those of you who may not know," he said, gesturing to Odina, "is Princess Odina Ellis, last of the Ellis bloodline. She will be traveling with us to Cambria in order to take over as governor there."
He would let the weight of that information settle in for a moment. He doubted that Ber or Raff would have known her, unless they had bumped into her at some point. But just because Octavius and Vesper were of the nobility, that didn't mean they had been at open court to witness Odina confess to being Tara Ellis, the last remaining daughter of the usurped King Urion.
Once the moment had passed, Warren would gesture to the table and chairs before them. "Please, sit." He walked around the table to put out the chair for Odina, waited for her to sit, and would push the chair in for her. Then he would return to his own position, and sit once everyone else had.
"Given that Princess Ellis has spent much of her time in Cambria, she is the most knowledgeable among us regarding their ways. So if I may begin our meeting with a request, my lady, would you mind giving us a brief summary of anything you may know about their current governor, Isolde, and the current state of affairs in Cambria?"

She took the seat pulled and offered sitting graciously, her smile had actually faded replaced with a serious line.
"When I last left Cambria, Isolde was just a a Witch Doctor a follower of the All-Mother, it wasn't widely followed I believe thats all changed of course. She's charismatic and her acolytes typically are very loyal to her...if that influence has spread to the Valykrie then be prepared to be very cold shouldered, they are highly trained warriors. Cambria women for a long tine were beaten down by men of Coheed until our intervention and protection still they trust none I fear of any blood outside of their own, most especially men," she looked at each and everyone at the table before addressing Warren's question again, "from my understanding Isolde is more conniving using the All-Mother as a way to twist her will upon the others, she from my understanding poisoned the previous Governor to take the position as Governor. She's been calling herself the Priestess...we can't underestimate her undermining operations."
Lieutenant Terach nodded politely as the Princess came in, not entirely sure of foreign protocol with Odina Ellis at all. The only thing he knew was that royalty did stuff first, so he gave a stern look at @berengar to make sure he didn't make any gaffes that way. He waited politely until the Captain @warren had her seated and Raff made a small gesture for the soldiers to sit now.
He quietly took his seat with his hands on his legs and sitting very upright. This was no time to slack off. The captain's introduction helped out and when the Princess spoke, the wheels started turning in his head. So that's what all this hush hush meeting place was all about! So this person Isolde was using religion as a way to control the masses! That could make for some dangerous territory and Raff was very glad she'd brought it up right away. There was no quicker way to turn an entire population into obedience, than by purposely using religious zealotry.
Terach nodded twice at Odina's comments, but had nothing to add. He needed time to take in so much serious information and it would be crucial timing and precision to get this done right! He spared another looked at Stormcrest and the other soldiers to make sure they were paying mind to her words. This would be critical to get perfect.

Dark eyes had rested on Woodwick as the captain began speaking as to their goals in Cambria, though they shifted to the stranger as he introduced her as Princess Odina Ellis . As he took his seat, he supposed that explained why she seemed so out of place and why Ber hadn’t recognized her. Only once before had he been in the company of a Princess, and it had ended with an old witch cursing Ophelia, which did not make for a great track record of time spent in the company of Nevermerean royalty. Were they supposed to bow to her, now that they knew who she was? If other people did, he would too.
And why did they need their help to replace the governor of Cambria? Couldn’t they just swap out this Isolde woman for the Princess and get back to Dresmond?
Apparently not. Dark eyes focused on the Princess as she spoke of the state of affairs in Cambria, but the more she spoke, the more Ber realized he knew very little about the territory that Nevermere had acquired years ago. A slew of unfamiliar words and titles washed over him. There was a Witch Doctor, who followed the All Mother, but who was the All Mother and what did she do? What was an acolyte? What was the difference between a Witch Doctor and a Priestess and how was Isolde, former Witch Doctor, both a Priestess and the Governor of Cambria? And she also mentioned some Valkyrie, which were apparently highly trained warriors who didn’t like men.
Rather dubiously, the soldier glanced around at the others seated around the table. Right. That was great.
What he did understand clearly was that this Isolde was clever and sneaky, that she likely had a far stronger influence over her people than anyone in this room did, and that she probably wouldn’t be willing to step down of her own accord. Closing his eyes, Ber ran a hand down his face and resisted the urge to sigh. In the silence that followed, he would wait for an invitation to ask questions or for Woodwick to provide further explanation. After both occurred - or enough time passed that he was sure nothing would follow - he would look around the table again, wondering why he seemed to be the only one who seemed confused about what the Princess had said.
He cleared his throat. “I, uh— Sorry, but what’s a Witch Doctor? How is that different from being Priestess?” The questions came hesitant as dark eyes flicked between Odina Ellis and @warren . He had no recollection of ever sitting down for an explanation of the traditions of either Coheed or Cambria n Nevermere acquired them, and all any of the soldiers wanted to talk about with regards to Cambria were the women.
A brief pause, then he ventured: “And if this All Mother is saying that Isolde is in charge, can we get her to say that she changed her mind and the Princess is supposed to be Governor instead of Isolde?” That seemed like an easier way to complete their task than trying to get a bunch of enhanced women to obey men to whom they already weren’t inclined to listen. If Isolde had the All Mother on her side, then Ber didn’t see why they couldn’t do the same. Surely one potentially stubborn woman, whoever she was and whatever she did, would be easier to convince than a whole territory of them.
Warren settled his eyes upon Odina as she spoke, nodding occasionally to watch she had to say. Although he had a basic understanding of life in Cambria and the roles played by certain women, he had no inside knowledge about Isolde. Although Odina had left Cambria before she'd become the Priestess, the woman still knew her at least in a roundabout way, which was helpful. He tucked the information away. He hadn't wanted to be bogged down with parchment, quill, and ink, during the meeting but he would have to remember all of this for later.
When she finished, Warren nodded and looked around the room. "Does anyone have any specific questions about that information?" He asked, and gave a moment for the others to bring those questions up. Ber waited through some of the silence, and then spoke up for clarifications. His questions were reasonable. He had no reason to have any knowledge about Cambria, so all of this would be completely new to him. "Originally, there were four roles of what we would consider higher rank for women of Cambria to achieve. There are Elders, who are women not unlike those who head covens here in Nevermere. They're experienced and respected for their wisdom. There are three of them, they oversee different parts of the Cambrian warriors."
"As for Witch Doctors, I believe only one would exist at a time. Her role was to perform the coming of age ritual on Cambrian women. That ritual gives the women their strength. And the last two were Chieftess and Chieftess's second. The chieftess was the leader of the entire tribe, much like our King. Her second was somewhat like a Princess, who is brought up to take the chieftess's place when she chooses to leave, or dies. When Nevermere acquired Cambria, the current chieftess was made governor. When that governor died, Isolde was the current Witch Doctor of the tribe. She took over as Chieftess, but instead of appointing a new witch doctor, she combined her role as witch doctor and chieftess into what she calls Priestess. Now she performs both roles. What I suspect," he said with a sigh, "Is that she is hoarding the power for herself, so that she may be the one to choose who can and cannot receive the coming of age ceremony. This is only my suspicion, though, and is not a confirmed fact. I'm unsure as of right now why she would want to disallow certain girls their ceremony, but that is one of the things we will be looking into when we arrive."
Most people in Nevermere weren't very religious. Military and war, those things were their religion. But that didn't mean that it didn't exist. It was just lesser known, and especially to commoners. "Unfortunately the All-Mother is not a person who we can sway, Mr. Stormcrest. She is similar to the twofold goddess, in that she is an entity of religion. Religion can be used to sway people in many ways and can also be twisted to suit a leaders will. If the Cambrian's who are loyal to Isolde's believe she has a greater power on her side, it will indeed make her more difficult to remove."
Once more, he looked to Odina Ellis . "Please correct me if I've been wrong about any of this, Princess Ellis. Furthermore, I know little about the Valkyries. They're a subset of Cambrian warriors who are especially fierce, but that is the extent of knowledge. We should not take any Cambrian lightly in battle, however. All those who have had their coming of age ceremony are even physically stronger than men of Coheed, and they aren't particularly fond of men in general."
Odina listened very intently nodding ever so often in agreement, she liked the questions asked from the one mam, and Woodwick was nailing it in the explanation. When he asked for her confirmation she didn't hesitate to answer, "No all was perfectly well said Captain," she reassured him before speaking on behalf of the his confession on lack of knowledge about the Valykrie, "These women go beyond that of the regular standards of being a warrior: they eat, sleep, train, and live everyday of being a Valykrie...try to think of your mandatory training and how most of the population go into the military after, it's just like that for them everyday. But, tighter. I honestly don't know much about the ceremony works, when I came to Cambria I was embraced but always an outsider an elderly woman took me in. I do know when the Bantu Siri tribe last attacked Cambria and I was there I learned the tribe of men took the item or piece of the ritual needed to preform these additional feats of strength, I'm not sure if that's helpful but I do believe it's worth knowing."
Terach looked around the table and listened, very curious about this place Cambria. A place where everyone was strong and military sounded fantastic! Well unless you counted the religion part which could make heads roll fast. Not really fond of lots of public speaking, he kept his questions to the bare minimum.
To Warren he asked, "So if the Princess Odina is instated as governor, will she be expected to take over as Priestess and Witch Doctor too? Or will the balance of the three positions need to be restored?"
His listened in silence, but his blue eyes practically gleamed at the idea of learning so many new things. He didn't get the chance often.
When the princess had said her piece, he asked her respectfully,
"Do you know exactly what those 'additional feats of strength' are? Are they all the same thing or different aspects?"
Before Zevran, Ber had never cared much about the happenings of other kingdoms - arguably, he still didn’t for most of them - but despite Nevermere’s acquisition of a Coheed and Cambria, the Dresmondi had been the first to truly show him that not every kingdom functioned like the one that the soldier knew. If Nevermere and Dresmond sat at opposite ends of the spectrum, then it sounded like Cambria rested somewhere between them.
Providing the Nevermerean equivalents that helped Ber make sense of these foreign titles, Woodwick spoke of four high ranking positions in the kingdom: three Elders, one Witch Doctor, one Chieftess, and one Chieftess’s Second. After Nevermere, the Chieftess became the Governor - that was the position they wanted the Princess to fill. Isolde, the Witch Doctor turned Chieftess, combined the two roles into the Priestess, which made her the Governor of Cambria as well. As he put it all together, Ber nodded his understanding and leaned back in his seat. His gaze shifted from the captain to the Princess as she spoke of the Valkyrie, and his heart sank as he imagined, should the situation call for it, trying to somehow hold his own against well-trained warrior women who all had the strength of a werewolf.
He doubted Cambria would have throne room walls to stop him if someone decided to send him flying a second time.
That hypothetical combined with the last piece of information that the Princess shared split Ber’s thoughts into two different directions. The thoughts percolated while Terach spoke his piece, and once he had and the questions had been answered, Ber wavered for a moment before picking one to cover first. He looked back at @warren , hesitated for another heartbeat, then finally asked, “If the All-Mother is, uh, not a real person who can contradict us, couldn’t we still say that the All-Mother decided that the Princess should be Governor?” Dark eyes glanced toward Odina Ellis as he asked this before drifting back to the captain. If Isolde could use religion, Ber didn’t see a reason to avoid fighting fire with fire; maybe it was a little underhanded, but Nevermere wasn’t paying him for honesty. And, he figured, at the very least, contradicting claims could cause enough confusion to lessen Isolde’s hold over her followers.
He turned to Odina Ellis now, mind shifting to the second question that had arisen with her words. “And following up on Lieutenant Terach’s questions - if part of the coming of age ritual has been missing, then there’s a group of women who should have had that ritual done but haven’t? They don’t have the extra strength.” A pause. “Do we know who they are? Or how we can tell who has had that ritual done and who hasn’t?”
Still taking mental notes, Warren leaned forward against the table when she made her last comment. His eyes lingered on Odina, but his mind was working elsewhere. He didn't know much about the ritual itself, or how the women came to gain their additional strength. That it was a single item that granted them their gifts was curious. He'd thought it some kind of special magic, but items could usually be used regardless. Used on anyone. Even soldiers.
But it had been stolen, by the Coheedsmen? How had that happened, when Nevermere's soldiers were supposed to be keeping an eye on the place the whole time? How long had it been gone?
Raff's question snapped him out of his thoughts, and he finally turned away from Odina to address the man. "I would need to confirm with Commander Usher, but I believe Princess Ellis will be allowed to do with the Cambrians as she see's fit, as long as they remain loyal to Nevermere. I believe Witch Doctors are generally also healers within the tribe," he turned back to Odina. "And I'm unsure if Princess Ellis wields healing capabilities? So it may be necessary to divide the roles once more anyway."
Once again he became quiet, allowing Odina to answer the questions asked of her or to respond to whatever he might have said. Then he turned to Ber's question, lifting a hand to rub his face. "There may be a way that we can use the All-Mother against them, but...it would be unlikely. Cambrian's are not fond of men, and their goddess would not likely favor us or anyone on our side, and as the Princess said, she was technically still an outsider even despite being raised there. Even if it wasn't Isolde, their beliefs would have them push for a Cambrian-born woman regardless."
He thought of what Hadrian had said in the meeting with Odina that hadn't taken place too long before, and finally relaxed against the back of his chair again. "However, the Commander does seem to think that the women following Isolde are of a small group, who will easily disbanded and handled once we've sussed them all out. We'll have a better handle on it once we get there, and can see it for ourselves."

Odina kindly addressed @raff and his question first, "They naturally are born with a physical enhancement and a enhanced sense which for physical range from strength, speed, or well I don't know how to explain it but certainly things they pick up quickly...impossible bow shots, they just can kinda hit it better," she paused looking between everyone, "their senses are sight, smell, and hearing. Much like the men of Coheed, except when a woman approaches maturity the first bloods ritual makes them stronger...there is nothing to compare to it the women of Cambria are stronger then the men of Coheed, almost twenty times stronger than the normal man." She'd let that information settle with them as she looked at @berengar, "I like your direction of questioning," she was smirking a little, "I had just entered womanhood and I started noticing my peers started appearing with little tattooed runes on their wrists or somewhere on their arms, that's how we tell them a part, that will be how we know if the item or ritual was lost to Coheed...there should be women who don't have the marking...if that is the case, I say we need to find or learn the root of the ritual, follow me on this, if we can get this in our possession first we can use it to twist the All-Mother to our will and as you said, make it appear the All Mother wants me as Governor?"
Now she looked at Warren, "Maybe Coheed should be looked into possibly having the mean to finding what they took?"
