The peace that formerly reigned in Terra Nova has eroded, now little more than a memory. War ravages the continent. Disputes divide kingdoms; ideals divide families. The quest for power consumes absolutely and indiscriminately. None are immune to its allure.
Who will rise and who will fall? Only time—and ambition—will tell.

5 whole years of Heir Apparent goodness! When I started the site, I knew I was hunkering down for the long haul, but I never could have predicted the numerous twists and turns this roleplay site has seen. Hundreds of plots, characters, and members have come and gone, all leaving marks on the site. I am so very thankful for those who have invested. Because you keep coming back, keep getting on, and keep writing, Heir Apparent has the legacy it does today. Three cheers to us!

Over the years, Ona had developed a talent for noticing when people started blushing and what had caused it. Every time she was the reason for it, it brought a smile to her face, and especially in a situation such as this one in which she hasn't been paid to be pretty and nice. No, these were free compliments and that blush on Demelza's cheeks was worth more than money.
Still, she wasn't quite sure if it was because she had complimented her voice, or if it was from the adrenaline that came with over-performing an Eldouir.
Demelza repeated her name, which still sounded like music to Ona.
"Of course we'll have you!" she responded cheerfully. "I haven't seen the people where this happy in a long while." She listened to what else Demelza said, and nodded slightly. "Well, welcome back to Dresmond, for what it's worth. This place isn't exactly... what it used to be." She held up a finger and pointed it at Demelza with a slight smile. "Don't let it wear that pretty smile of you down, Mel", she said, immediately coming up with a nickname for this new person.

At the acceptance of her offer, Demelza let out a small, involuntary squeal of delight. A place to perform. It was a small glimmer of hope in a dark time, one that she seized onto with both hands. “Music’s the way to the heart,” Demelza said with a slight, flirty tease, “Least, that’s what I’ve heard.”
When she was called Mel, Demelza almost corrected her to say it was Liza. But…she rathered liked the new nickname. Not because of the name itself, but because it was Ona who had given it to her. That it was just for them. That made Demelza blush all the more, so much that she practically glowed.
“Never,” Demelza said with all the resolution of her revolutionary heart, “This place ain’t what it used to be, no, but Dresmond’s still here. Just look…” Liza gestured out over the crowd, which was still buzzing with excitement, “It’s there.” She turned back to Ona, wide-eyed and hopeful, “And worth fighting for.”

Ona laughed in response to what Demelza said about music being the way to the heart. "Music is definitely a way to the heart. I've heard the stomach and sex are a way to it as well." She chuckled and winked. Winking was Ona's way to show she wasn't entirely serious, or that she was joking about the reality of things.
A soft smile was visible on her face, and there was a certain warmth she could feel inside her heart. She absolutely loved Demelza's positivity and how she spoke about the people in the tavern, and Dresmond in general. "You're correct, darling. Dresmond is worth fighting for, and after a long day of fighting, the people are welcome here to recharge their energy with a drink, and now your beautiful music."
She noticed a man and one of her girls descending the stairs out of the corner of her eye, and Ons faced their direction for a moment before returning her attention to Mel. "Just for the transparency of things, not that it is a secret but I assume you won't know because you've only just gotten back to Dresmond, but this isn't just a tavern. Me and my girls also offer... different kinds of services, if you will. I just wanted to let you know in case you are uncomfortable with performing in such an establishment."
Ona became silent, gauging for a reaction, and simultaneously wondering if Demelza would be a good asset to the Siren's Song. The secret collective consisted mostly of prostitutes, but maybe a musician could be a benefit as well.

Demelza giggled with sheer joy as she blushed and reveled in Ona’s attention. What a stunner she was. Tinged with sadness, yes, but in a way that was so hauntingly beautiful Demelza thought her a work of art. The revelation that this was a whorehouse made Demelza’s brow furrow. Such things had not existed in the times before the Elouir—why would they? The Dresmondi were a sexually liberated people, but ones that did not traffic in it. The fact that there was a need to do so now plucked a string of sorrow in Demelza’s heart.
“Makes no difference to me,” Demelza said with a shrug, though her voice was a little rattled, “Music is music for those that wanna hear it.” She looked around, searching the faces of those there as if they contained answers. “Do the Eldouir often come here?”

Sex used to be something nobody paid for, indeed, but a lot had changed since the Eldouir. You couldn't just trust anyone anymore, so a brothel was a good place to get laid without having to put too much trust in someone else. You got your fix and the other got their money. It wasn't always money, either. As long as it was at least a bit valuable, it would probably be accepted as payment.
Ona didn't fully believe Mel, but even if Demelza just pretended to be fine with it, it made little difference to the tavern owner. She wasn't forcing the girl to perform, but it was nice to have her.
It was her turn to look around, before answering Demelza's question. "Sometimes, but not too often. Their interest in the tavern has grown, but so far I haven't had any problems with them. I'm a fighter, I want you to know that, but I'm also smart and tactical. I play along when they want something. Angering them and getting killed isn't going to help me liberate my people." She sat back and took a sip of her drink. "We'll have a talk about that in a while, after Tribute. I want to get to know you better, but I think we might make a good team."
A team for what would be for Demelza to find out later.

As Ona’s eyes left her, Demelza felt immediately guilty that she’d soured the mood. Sunshine: that was what Demelza wanted to bring back to her people, in however small a way. By the time Ona looked at her again, Demelza’s flirty smile would be back, bursting from her face like a sunbeam.
“I reckon you’re right,” Demelza agreed. Unless Ona protested, Demelza would take Ona’s hand and kiss the back of it while doing a tiny curtsy, “I’m at yer service, m’lady. If you’ve got drink, music, and company, there’s not much more I can ask for. Well…” Demelza smirked, gazing at Ona, “A nice view’s a plus, anyway.” She tilted her head.
“Any food or drink around? Promise I’m a good girl and can sing for my supper.”
