MARRIAGE & FAMILY
MARRIAGE
In Nevermere, the women take the rank and surname of the man. Commoner women can marry noblemen and become noblewomen (though they will always maintain their "commoner stench"), but noble women who marry common men forfeit their titles and wealth and are usually disowned.WEDDING CEREMONY
All weddings in Nevermere take place on the sacred grounds of Obsidian Harbor, a beach of black sand located on the outskirts of Skia near the sea. It is an ancient ceremonial ground, the preferred location for larger sacrifices, and laced with powerful magic. If a could chooses to have a reception then it takes place before the ceremony. Commoners have smaller, quieter affairs, often with just family and close friends, while nobles will often host a celebration. When the merrymaking has ended and night has come the couple and their closest family or friends attend them for the ceremony. It is conducted by an Elder Witch. The ceremony is quiet and sacred. She cuts the palms of their hands and they clasp them together and recite the following words as their blood mingles: "Our bond is true, our blood is pure, our marriage new, we will endure." They chant these words three times. Then drops of their blood are squeezed into a small vial to complete the ceremony. The vial is kept by the couple as a sacred symbol of their marriage. They then leave to their new home to consummate the vow. Divorce is never even mentioned in Nevermere. However, in extenuating circumstances, a man can choose to divorce a woman. The divorce is completed by the couple breaking the vial of blood from their wedding in the presence of an Elder Witch.
FAMILY
While family is essential because they are at your roots, there is a cultural perspective of 'rising above' that inspires the young to do better than their parents and to not settle with what they were born to. While family is valuable, having more power is ultimately regarded as a greater benefit.
