The BASHAR Family
FAMILY VALUES
The old ways — the Bashar does not respect or follow the changes made by the Rainecourt family. When Julius centralized the military, they did not comply. They had their own troop and would continue to train said troop, albeit in secret, and illegally. Men are still deemed as more important than women, but they considered their magic to be valuable. They know they need witches to stand a chance against the royal military, but limit the witches’ freedom magic-wise to keep them under control.
Restoring Nevermere — the Bashar want to see prince Urion on the throne, and have made it their goal to find him, take over the power and reinstall the rightful successor. If they are unable to locate the prince, or the prince is dead, they want to see a Morrigan or a Bashar on the throne.
Making the family stronger — marriage is meant to make the family stronger. The Bashar marry like-minded individuals to make their bloodline stronger, and train their own army to take over from the Rainecourts.
HEADSHIP
Ibrahim Bashar is the head of the family. The Bashar bloodline didn't start with him, but became even more important after he married Julane Morrigan, the younger sister of Sarilla Morrigan.
Ibrahim is both the head of the family as the Captain of the troops.
The second oldest Bashar son, his brother Xavier Bashar, aids him with military training, as well as some Bashar soldiers that have climbed the ranks.
Marcus Bashar is the head of the Bashar witches and is responsible for teaching them about their magic, and making them master it (see ‘other’).
UPBRINGING
The Bashar’s upbringing is harsh. From a young age, they are taught about the history of Nevermere and how the Rainecourts have taken away the throne from their extended family. While they don’t see it that way, the children are basically brainwashed into sharing this opinion, although most of them would feel this way anyway. As soon as they are able to stand and hold a sword, they will be taught how to fight for their family, their name and their honor.
That being said, the above doesn’t mean that the children aren’t loved. They are seen as successors, the new generation that will lead them to victory, but their capability as a soldier and their dedication to the family’s values almost always goes hand in hand with exactly how loved a child is.
MATURITY
Although a Bashar is an adult at sixteen, the elder members of the family keep an eye on the young adults until they are eighteen, and if they make mistakes during this time, they will be reprimanded more strongly than before they turn sixteen. If a young adult doesn't behave accordingly between the age of sixteen-eighteen, they will be considered unfit to take on important roles, and will most likely stay a regular soldier for the rest of their adulthood, unless they somehow manage to prove themselves worthy of more responsibilities.
MARRIAGE
Marriage is a sensitive subject for the Bashar family. Members of the family that marry into a family that's pro-Rainecourt, or even neutral leaning towards pro-Rainecourt, are shunned by the rest of the family. They feel very strongly about undoing the changes the Rainecourts have made during their reign, and will not tolerate a child marrying into a family that doesn't mind the changes.
The Bashar have a complicated family tree, and a lot of them marry the Morrigans to keep their values and money within one big family. Love definitely comes secondary. The main goal of marriage is improving their troop and the overall strength of the family.
Bashar men are allowed to look for a match themselves, but if they don’t marry by the age of 22, a match will be made for them. However, even if they find a match for themselves before this age, the match will be thoroughly researched and reviewed to prevent any possibility of the match being pro-Rainecourt and/or a threat to the family.
ROLES
Currently, Ibrahim Bashar is the head of the family, and also the Captain of the Bashar troops. Because he hosts a mandatory training camp on the family's grounds, he's also an Off-site Trainer for the Skia/royal military.
The second-oldest, Xavier Bashar, is the Lieutenant of the troops.
His youngest brother, Idris Bashar, is responsible for keeping an ear out for news from Skia and the Rainecourts, both on a political as military level. However, Idris became very ill recently, and has been teaching his son to take over.
Marcus Bashar is the head of the Bashar witches and is responsible for teaching them about their magic, and making them master it (see ‘other’).
The troops consist of the Bashar family and the soldiers of nearby living families. Every witch gets paired with a male soldier, with the purpose of allowing all of the men to be able to shift into their werewolf form. However, in contrast to the Skia military, the witches are not supposed to control the werewolf. Their only task is to release the beast and then to make sure she helps him in battle, be that with potions or the summoning of creatures to assist him.
So it is fair to say that the men of the family are deemed the most important. The women are seen as less important, but aren’t completely repressed. They are mostly valued for their magic and the role it has in their troops. What Ibrahim isn’t telling them, is that he plans on removing even this bit of importance from them if/once they succeed at retaking the throne. He wants Nevermere to go back to the way it was before, where women were silent and couldn’t attend open court.
OCCUPATION
First and foremost, the Bashar are soldiers, or they don't work due to their wealth, but being a blacksmith, forger, farrier and anything that serves the family, like being a farmer, is also encouraged. They are autarchic and self-sufficient. Everything is by the Bashar, for the Bashar. What isn't encouraged, and even frowned upon, is being a merchant or a trader. They don't do business with families that serve the crown, and only care about the wellbeing of their own family.
Ibrahim is slowly working his way up in the capital again, and does this with the help of trusted family members. Nobody starts working outside of the estate without his explicit permission.
CITIZEN STATUS
The Bashar are a noble family, dating back from before the usurpation of the throne by the Rainecourt family. They were known as proud supporters of the Ellis, and disappeared after the attack to the outskirts of Nevermere, where they live far away from the capital. They focus on themselves and while they do sometimes go to the capital city, they refrain from really participating in the economy. However, they do keep up appearances and make it seem like they have no problem with the 'modern' Nevermerean reality.
LAND & WEALTH
There are two lands on which the Bashar reside.
In the outskirts, there is LAKEVIEW KEEP, a big fortress overlooking lake Bashar between Skia and Cambria. Although it is a fortress, the inside is well-decorated and beautiful, with tapestries and sitting areas decorated with statues and pieces of art. The interior shows how wealthy they are. Lakeview Keep is where they reside most of the time. Here, they are born, here they grow up and here they train. The Keep is big enough for the whole family, and most of the Bashar prefer to live in the Keep instead of having their own smaller homes closeby. None of them live close to the city, and Ibrahim wants to keep it that way.
Behind Lakeview Keep, there are big fields for crops and farming. There are workshops scattered around the domain, for the forgers and the blacksmiths, as well as stalls for horses, cows, sheeps, etc. They are self-sufficient and rely on themselves to survive harsh winters, which (due to their wealth) has never been a problem before. If they have a bad harvest, they know trusted merchants to buy from, but generally they try to refrain from doing so.
Around their estate are other, SMALLER estates. The families who live here are like-minded individuals, eager to keep up appearances and act as if they don't mind the current ruler. Apart from the Morrigans, it is with these families that Bashar children get married.
But in Ver 828, Ibrahim purchased a second residence. This one is just outside of Skia, and was bought under a false name in order to keep the existence of the big Bashar family hidden. GORGON MANOR is their residence right outside the walls of Skia. On the front turrets of the manor are two statues of a Gorgon. He bought it after receiving a letter from @gunne , informing him of her arrest. Ibrahim only stays here when he needs to be in Skia.

HISTORY
The Bashar are an old family that has always been an important and influential family in Nevermere. Over the centuries, they have managed to become incredibly rich, which allows them to live extravagant, wealthy lives.
Under Ellis rule, they were active soldiers and advisors. With the marriage of Ibrahim and Julene, the sister of Queen Sarilla, they became even more present in politics and kingdom related affairs. When the soldiers rose up against the Rainecourt and Delaney troops, a lot of them got killed, together with Julene’s siblings and their partners, but Ibrahim and Julene managed to flee, having heard whispers of the coup hours before it happened. They gathered Ibrahim’s family and left Skia behind. It is generally believed that they weren't in the capital to begin with, which has led to there not being consequences for them or suspicions of them being anti-Rainecourt.
They fled to Lakeview Keep, their big manor/fort in the outskirts, located on a cliff, overlooking the lake between Skia and Cambria. The manor had been in the family for generations but hadn't been used in a long time. When it was first built, the lake was named after the Bashar family. It was here that Ibrahim and his family started to plot their revenge on Julius Rainecourt, and later Cassian Rainecourt.
Their first order of business was disregarding absolutely everything the new royal family said and did. They considered the Rainecourt and the Delaney family to be traitors, as well as anyone who listened to this new so-called ‘king’. They did not participate in the centralized military and instead organized their own troops. The Bashar had always been skilled soldiers, so finding the men and women willing to train and fight was not an issue.
They surpass the mandatory training by hosting their own training, so they don't have to send their children to military training hosted by the Rainecourt military. Not all children do it in Skia and instead go to other cities throughout Nevermere. This is the Bashar's only tie to the Rainecourt military. While they allow every child to enter, they don't share any of their political views with them. Over the span of the six years of training, some of the children start to show that they are like-minded, and Ibrahim recruits them as soldiers in his troops. Most of these children are from the smaller estates around theirs, from families who had moved to the outskirts over the span of the last thirty years and who are generally like-minded anyway (this gives you the opportunity to create a character who isn't a Bashar/Morrigan but is also anti-Rainecourt and connected to the Bashar).
Around the same time of them organizing their own troops, in the first couple of years after Julius took over the throne, Ibrahim also created a coven in his troops (see ‘other’) to keep the witches in check and make sure they were doing what he wanted them to do.
Ibrahim purchased Gorgon Manor to be able to stay closer to the city, but doesn't want the family to move there permanently. It's their way to hide in plain sight, but he wants his family to come home often to debrief.
Their ultimate goal is to restore Nevermere to what it was before the Rainecourts took what wasn’t theirs. They want the long lost Ellis prince on the throne - or a Bashar/Morrigan - and are silently scheming and planning to make this happen.
Over the course of the last 8 or so years, since Cassian took over from his father, Ibrahim has slowly started to become more involved in society again, but at a very cautious pace. Now he feels like it's safe again to get his people out there.
OTHER
COVEN OF SAINT SARILLA — The Bashar witches belong to a coven, but this coven is far from the typical covens that sprouted after Julius gave the women more power. The Bashar coven is a sub-troop, led by a man, and is kind of a school. All women in the troops are obligated to be a part of the coven.
Here they are taught how to use their magic, which is mainly focussed on helping the male soldiers. Marcus Bashar, Ibrahim’s cousin, leads the coven and teaches the witches that while they wield it, it is their magic that is considered important, and not them. The witches are merely the vessel that allows them to use this magic. Because of that, the magic of the Bashar troops-witches is not the typical kind of magic of other Nevermerean witches. The four types of magic get far from the same kind of attention as they do in mandatory training.
For starters, the main type of magic they practice is summoning. They don’t do small, quick summons, but are taught to work together to summon large creatures. While the creature is loyal to its witch, it is the creature that gets all the credit if it succeeds at its purpose.
Potions are meant to heal the men on the battlefield. Healing potions, darkvision potions, invisibility potions and so on are considered useful, to help the men in battle, but the witches aren’t taught how to make potions for themselves or potions that don’t serve a purpose for the men (such as love potions and a truth serum).
The witches in the Bashar family itself, but also in the families that have sworn their loyalty to them, don’t really come into contact again with the art of cursing and incantations after their military training. Curses are considered to be too much active participation from a witch. The only curse they know and are taught in the coven, is the werewolf shifting curse that Ibrahim bought from a witch.
The fact that the men are able to turn into werewolves, is the reason that the coven was named after Sarilla, who they think of as a saint. In contrast to the rest of Nevermere, they don’t think of the curse as a ‘curse’, but they see it as a blessing from Saint Sarilla. She made the men even stronger than they were before.
Once a witch knows the werewolf shifting curse, she had to turn her partner into his werewolf form, which is known as the Sarilla Ritual. If they succeed at this, they are officially accepted as a paired-duo, and the witch receives a bite mark from the werewolf (either on her upper arm or her thigh). The witches have to cover the scar so nobody starts asking questions about it.
CREATION GUIDELINES
All open Bashars should be anti-Rainecourt, and not involved with anything ‘modern’ that happened under Rainecourt reign. If you’re interested in an open character, or have an idea yourself, send me (Aenwyn) a message, either here or on discord (aenwynn). If any of the NPC’s caught your attention and you’d like to play them, hit me up as well! We might be able to work something out. The gender of the open-to-be-played children does not have to correspond to the male/female image used for the spaceholder.
