There was only so much that one person could take. There was only so many choices that could be taken away before a woman finally snaps. When her mother had first run over in a crazed state saying that Izen Cyrilson had done something to the chieftain’s wife. At first she had just rolled her eyes, assuming this was some cruel joke or lesson her mother was trying to use to get her to quit the Parabolti. But then she continued talking, and her life started to crumble around her. Magda Ivanova . How could he have hurt her?
She had known Izen didn’t love her the way she dreamed that he one day would. But apparently she wasn’t even fulfilling enough as his wife in bed. He had sought out more, and while the rumors of the violent nature seemed like a stretch, maybe she didn’t know him at all. Maybe the father of her children wasn’t the upstanding Coheedsman she thought.
And so Miriel decided to finally make a decision on her own. Picking up her daughter and holding Kell’s hand she told her mother to leave. It was just all too much, and if she didn’t even know her husband, she was clearly not a fit mother. And her children?
They were monsters now when she looked at them. Looking down at Kell she saw Izen in his eyes and his smile, looking at her daughter she saw his nose. She recoiled from their smiles, and started to pace, chewing her cheek until it starts to bleed. As her children started to cry when the blood dripped down her cheeks she glared and smacked Kell on the cheek.
His cries turned to whimpers but Miriel had made her decision. Their lives were monstrosities and she was a failure. A failure as a wife and a mother. It could go on no longer. A calm settled over her face, a whisper of a smile even as she picked up the kitchen knife and slit both her sons and daughters throat. It was the only thing that she could do. This was her gift to Coheed.
Laying her children in the bed she had shared with Izen, she smiled, watching them sleep in peace. They were in a better place now, they were safe from their father and Coheed was safe from what they might become. So she washed her hands and changed her clothes, stroking her children’s cheeks and pressing a kiss to each forehead before walking to the beach.
Without a second thought she walked into the water, and never looked back. It was the last thing she ever did, and it was her choice for the first time in her whole life. So she had a smile on her face as she swam and swam and swam, until eventually she slipped into the watery depths. The cold was inviting, almost warm, and it was peaceful. She wasn’t meant for much, and she died without a gasp.
