SIMON HAAS
GENERAL
Name: Simon Ishir Haas
Age: Twenty nine
Birth Season: Fall
Occupation: Historian/Scholar
Citizen Status: Marquis
PHYSICAL
Height: 6'4"
Weight: 151 lbs
Body Description: Simon is handsome but not at all charming. He has dark, stern features with a heavy brow often furrowed in thought or frustration. Just like his father, he is tall and imposing, with broad shoulders and a naturally muscular frame. Even since he stopped training to be a soldier, he has kept in incredible shape, which would be obvious to anyone looking. His choice in clothing is reminiscent of his military upbringing; finely made, but utilitarian in both style and color, favoring blues and grays over anything else. This has the added benefit of being easy to match. The attention to grooming one could expect for a military man has gone a little by the wayside. He has grown out a beard and left his dark curls long, as they are too much trouble to keep up with. He walks with a long, unadorned wooden cane with a blade hidden within. The cane assists him in navigating the world, and also provides protection if necessary.
PERSONAL
Alignment: Lawful Good
Reputation: Simon is a polarizing man with a spotless reputation. He’s not the ideal cocktail party guest. He is overly-serious and has a tendency to brood rather than carouse with others. Simon’s interest is in the intellectual rather than the social, the practical rather than the pleasant. But anyone who knows him beyond the superficial knows him to be a man of great honor. He has a strong, inflexible moral code which dictates how he lives every single aspect of his life. He is disciplined, self-sacrificing, and protective of anyone who is being marginalized or silenced. Simon is also a secret romantic, a lover of art and idealism, of story and romance. He believes that storybook heroes are possible - he just stopped believing himself to be one of them.
Combat Experience: Before the age of nineteen, Simon was trained alongside other elite fighters in the Haas Legion. He was one of the finest soldiers that his father had ever trained, favoring heavy weapons like the battle-axe and broadsword. Like the rest of his father’s fighters, he was incredibly skilled in hand-to-hand combat, as it provided the basis for all over training. Since losing his sight, Simon is not the warrior he once was. However that’s not to say he is unable to fight. Simon has worked diligently to adapt his combat training to his new situation. Though he’d never be able to take on an army like he had been trained to, in most circumstances he’d be able to hold his own one-to-one, particularly if that person wasn’t a trained fighter.
MAGIC
No magic.
HISTORY
Family:
Ishir Haas - father | Antonia Haas - mother | Shray Haas - sister
Tale:
Marquis Ishir Haas, was a Lord Marshal of Lorendale - a formidable man who was both respected and feared by all who knew him. Though the Haas legion was not the largest army in the land, what they lacked in size they made up for in skill and strength. Haas fighters were a small disciplined elite sought far and wide throughout the kingdom. Ishir was directly involved in every part of his soldier’s training. His persistent interest in honing his craft made him marry late. When he was well into his forties, Ishir was arranged to be married to a young noblewoman named Antonia, twenty years his junior.
Despite all odds, Antonia and Ishir had a contented marriage. Even though he was not the man Antonia would have perhaps wanted to marry, he provided for her and treated her with dignity and respect. Simon was born as their first son and heir to the Haas family dynasty. Starting at a very young age, Simon adored his father. True to his nature, Ishir was disciplined and stern with his child, but also protective and loving in his way. He constantly pushed Simon to excel in every area of his studies, but took particular interest in training him to one day take his place as Lord Marshall.
Antonia gave birth to a baby girl five years after Simon, who they named Shray. While Shray was given a similar education to Simon, it was clear that Simon remained his father’s favorite. They both shared the same sense of idealism, believing that a better world could be created through the decency and good work of honorable men. Shray, however, was more competitive, changeable, wanting to do everything she could to compete for her father’s attention. Shray did all she could to outdo Simon, but somehow he always came out on top.
By the time he was fifteen, Simon was already turning out to be one of the finest soldiers that Ishir had ever trained. He had the physical stamina and power to get the job done, but also the mental discipline and scholarly mind that it took to lead an army. As Ishir aged, knowing that his time would eventually come, he knew that he was leaving the Haas army in good hands.
It was just before Simon’s eighteenth birthday that he first noticed that something was wrong. Colors weren’t as bright as they used to be. Shapes started bleeding into one another, making each one difficult to discern. He compensated for a long time, able to conceal his declining vision, reluctant to admit that anything was wrong for fear of disappointing his father. But one day, when Simon was nineteen, he had gone out for a long ride in the woods and fallen asleep with a book under a favorite tree. When he woke up, his vision was gone. Everything was just a landscape of gray and white phantoms - shifting light patterns without form. Terrified, Simon tried to gather his things, find his horse, find his way home, but it was no use. When his son did not return, Ishir sent his finest and fastest soldiers out to retrieve his son. When they found Simon, he was feeling around in the darkness - lost, afraid, alone.
Simon’s loss of vision changed everything. Suddenly Ishir Haas was staring down the last years of his life with no one to lead his army. In the gap, Shray - more spiteful and jealous of Simon than ever - stepped in. She pledged to her father that she would make the Haas family proud. And what choice did Ishir have? He began to prepare Shray for the responsibilities that he had intended to hand over to his favored son.
Initially, Simon was devastated. The life that he was wanted and strove for for so long had been ripped out from underneath him. But, after several months of cowering and self-loathing, Simon reemerged. He was, after all, his father’s son. It would do him no good to feel sorry for himself, to waste away just because things hadn’t turned out the way he had hoped. Simon poured himself into his studies, becoming an academic expert in all matters of military history. He started to study political systems, study different theories and philosophies, anything he could get his hands on. He did this all through scribes and lectors - memorizing entire texts as they were read to him and then dictating his own scholarly works to a scribe.
It has been six years since Ishir Haas passed away, his wife Antonia following quickly behind him. Simon remains head of the Haas family. His sister, Shray, is in charge of training the Haas military force, but has yet to claim the title of Marshall. Her reputation is that of a spiteful, self-serving child, while Simon’s is that of his father. He continues to study and counsel in all matters military, expanding his base of knowledge and continuing to be a respected figure in Lorendale society.
