The peace that formerly reigned in Terra Nova has eroded, now little more than a memory. War ravages the continent. Disputes divide kingdoms; ideals divide families. The quest for power consumes absolutely and indiscriminately. None are immune to its allure.
Who will rise and who will fall? Only time—and ambition—will tell.

This fall and winter was a period of low activity for the site, but even so, the Dresmond board has continued to simmer with excitement. This kingdom has moved from distant side dish to a dramatic main course in the world of Terra Nova. A big shout out to members Heather, Nix, and Darkest whose high activity has helped lead it through a renaissance into a new era!
The project had started as a palate cleanser; a novelty to tinker with between his more serious endeavors. Evander would work on it a little here and there, not so much interested in whether it was useful as he was in whether he could get it right. And boy had he gotten it right. Now that the item was complete, he was satisfied to know his little mental exercise had turned into something with practical applications. And satisfied was about as close to happy as Evander was capable of getting.
Having left his workshop, Evander had set off in search of a drink and someone to share it with. He'd sent word out to his siblings, inviting them to join him. It wasn't like Evander to ask such things, so it would have come as a bit of a surprise. Most days, Evander was a solitary creature. Given his profession and general disposition, he spent more time at the Blackwood estate than anyone else that lived there. This suited him just fine; outside of his family, Evander found most people to be tiresome and tedious. But on rare nights like this one, he craved company. He wanted to celebrate - or at least not be alone.
Evander strode into the hall with a bottle of fine liquor tucked under his arm. The curtains had been flung back from the windows which towered up to the vaulted ceiling. Though he came equipped with his own spirits, he did pull a couple of thin shimmering disks, the size of coins, from a small drawer. He put one of the coins down and tapped it once. The disk bloomed up and outwards like a flower before climbing at the sides, transforming into a thick drinking glass. Evander started to pour himself a drink, the shadow of a rare smile on his face.

"Clear out brats! Ya done good. Go clean up and head on home 'less you're on barracks and mess tonight!"
With a wide, satisfied grin on her face, Calliope dismissed her newest batch of fresh meat recruits for the day as she put the head of her warhammer on the ground rather gently to not activate the enchantment schematic and rested an arm on the butt of the handle. It hadn't been a disappointing batch of kids this season so she was pleased with that but what was even better was Evander asking for company, a not so common occurrence. Sure, she had a tendency to just waltz on in and crash her siblings' dinners and whatnot like any good younger sibling, but it was being asked to join that usually got her excitement up because Evander always had reasons and they usually were pretty interesting.
Training yard cleared, she swung her warhammer up onto her shoulder with ease and made the trek to her office first before heading to her home nearby. She'd set up a home outside the estate to make her easier to reach when not at the estate so should anyone come knocking at her door, the saga enchantment she'd set up would ping on the band on her wrist that someone was waiting for her. Handy, when she was at the Blackwood Estate and it somehow furthered the notion that somehow she wasn't a Blackwood because, surely she wouldn't always answer her door if she was at the estate so therefore she wasn't one. She rolled her eyes at the thought as she walked through her front door and went straight back to freshen up because heaven help her if she showed up in anything less than presentable, warhammer propped at the foot of her bed.
Less than an hour later, Calliope walked into the hall looking comfortable but presentable as she pulled out a chair near her brother and shot him a grin. "Oh my god, Van is smiling! Must've been a hell of a project!" While they might not see eye to eye or understand each other all the time, she was always excited to hear about what he made and created.
Evander took a long, calming breath, smile fading as he advised himself to play nicely with his sister. If Evander was the dark horse of the family, Calliope was the raging bull. They’d been butting heads since childhood - Evander’s desire for order and control at odds with Calliope’s bold, abrasive style. She knew just how to get under Evander’s skin. Though Evander was usually able to tolerate her needling, when she did provoke him the results were explosive. But at the end of the day, none of that mattered. They were both Blackwoods, and their allegiance to one another were unbreakable.
“Every so often one must indulge in a little harmless merriment,” Evander tapped another one of the disks, a glass blooming which he filled with liquor. “Besides,” He turned around, subtle smile back as he handed Calliope her drink, “it’s shameful how much time has passed since I've seen you, Calli. If mother was still with us she would be most upset.” Evander delivered this whole speech with the austerity of someone who saw socializing as a skill to be regularly practiced rather than something to take enjoyment in.

Keion was returning home from running a few errands in Elyusian and at as fast of a pace as he could. It was quite uncommon that Evander, of all the siblings, would summon them all together. He knew nothing was wrong, otherwise they would have been summoned in much more haste, but he wondered what could have his brother actually wanting company.
Since leaving the Cavalry, he had spent much of his time training and preparing for the day that Cyrus would call on him to spend time in a different kingdom. It had been quite the change of pace for him, but he had taken to it quite well. When not training, he spent his days within the city keeping an eye and an ear on the local populace.
He entered the estate, heading towards the room where he knew his siblings would be waiting. He swept inside, a big smile plastered on his face. "Brother! Sister! To what do we owe this wonderous occasion?" He made his way to Calliope, bending to briefly press a kiss to her cheek and ruffle her hair. He offered the same big smile to Evander but did not approach, knowing better than to show physical affection to this particular brother. "Is everything alright? I cannot remember the last time you of all people called us all together"

Calliope bit the side of her tongue when Evander's simle dropped. Ugh. She wasn't trying to intentionally needle her brother, really. What she meant as something in jest, to prod out a grin or smile, could backfire at times and sometimes in the most spectacular of explosions between them regardless of intention. She'd try to not step on his toes and ultimately fail in the end though she'd had a little more success lately, by virtue of simply being not around the estate as much.
The slightest bit of relief settled in her shoulders when his smile came back and took the offered glass. Awesome, she hadn't screwed up immediately. Just because she liked to oke at him, at the rest if their brothers, didn't mean she disliked them. Far from it. It was how she usually showed her own affection for them, whether she was successful at it or not. "Oh, right in the heart, Van. Though I'm sure mother would have been pleased that I don't bring the hammer into the dining room anymore." Which, to be fair, she'd not been careful and accidentally smashed the table once. So that was understandable.
And then Keion swept in and she tried to swipe at his hand messing with her hair, and failing to stop him with a chuckle. "Kei! I even brushed my hair for you guys!" Really, she put in effort when it came to seeing the family, but even more for her brothers. She always felt a little less polished than they did so she did what she could to own it and make it her own personal style instead. Calliope took a sip of her drink as she resisted the urge to reach out to knock Keion's ankle out from under him.
"I bet Evander is about to blow us away with another invention or discovery." There was an obvious affection and pride in her voice as she tilted her goblet towards their second oldest brother. She loved them all, no matter how much of a headache she gave them all, intentionally or not.
Evander’s eyes crinkled at the edges when Calliope conjured up the memory of the hammer and their mother’s dining table. Of any of her children, Calliope was the one Thea seemed to struggle with the most. Evander had been the same with their father, which only made sense. Calliope and Evander were opposites in so many ways, but that didn’t make him love his sister any less - even if he had funny and subtle ways of showing it. For example, had anyone else attempted to give him a nickname, Evander would have killed it right out of the gate. However much he detested it, with Calliope he’d let it slide.
As soon as Evander heard more approaching footsteps, he started to pour another glass. By the time Keion approached Evander pushed the glass into his hand, returning his brother’s smile with the slightest upward twitch of his lips - which for Evander was quite the display of emotion. He sipped his drink, watching his siblings with vague amusement.
“Just a little something to entertain,” Evander set down his glass, shooting his brother a ‘you’re going to like this’ look before reaching into his breast pocket, “for now, anyway.” Out came a little silver case with two tiny objects inside. Evander palmed one of them, taking the other and holding it up. It was a small silver object which looked like a couple of hollowed-out silver molars which had been fused together. After his siblings had a chance to look at it, he reached inside his mouth and snapped it into place on top of his back teeth. There was no apparent effect.
"I’m sure I’ll find some useful applications. It’s just a matter of exploration,” Evander said nonchalantly, walking casually behind his sister as if to refill his drink. Once he was behind her, he smacked whatever object he’d palmed to the back of her neck. It looked like a small silver spider, whose needle-thin legs and latched themselves into the back of Calliope’s neck. “Like I said,” Evander would go to say, “Nothing too special.”
Only the words wouldn’t come out of Evander’s mouth. Though his mouth would move, no sound would come from him. Instead, his words would come from Calliope’s tongue as if he were the ventriloquist and she was the dummy. Though she was in full control of her other movements, she would not be able to speak or move her mouth of her own accord.

The moment he pulled out the case, Calliope was intrigued and leaned in to take a closer look at the little piece, though she didn't touch. She'd learned her lesson.... eventually, when it came to prodding at the things that Evander made. Sometimes it was fun, sometimes it was a shock, sometimes it could be embarrassing, but always something that was distinctly Evander at the end of the day. Some were easier to roll with, knowing that there was going to be some kind of reaction, and some, well there were some that she really shouldn't have touched.
What she wasn't quite expecting was Evander to smack the back of her neck and she reached back to smack his hand as she spoke. Except. That wasn't her voice and definitely not her words. And her words didn't come out and her mouth didn't move. Oh that little shit, well big shit, but he was her brother and she could definitely lift more than him. She was so going to get him back for this, she thought as her eyes narrowed playfully. If she'd had control of her mouth, her lips would have been pulled into a playful smirk. But she didn't have control so she didn't.
Instead, she lifted a hand to the back of her neck carefully, to run her fingers over whatever invention he'd smacked there while she quirked an eyebrow and drew a question mark in the air. Hey, Evander made it so she was gonna be careful with it! Plus, it was ingenious and could be great for messing with people. Maybe they could get Cyrus with it!

Keion grinned and winked at Calliope, giving her hair yet another ruffle just to spite her. He accepted the drink from Evander, raising it slightly in a show of thanks before taking a sip from it. He also made a point to move a couple paces away from Calliope in case she decided to retaliate for him messing with her hair.
"Well, I am quite excited to see what new invention you've come up with, Evander." it was said with full sincerity. While Keion was intelligent just as all the other Blackwoods were, he had always envied his brother's aptitude for the sciences and his studies. He raised an eyebrow when he caught Evander's look, then squinted at the small metal piece held between Evander's fingers. He didn't speak, allowing his brother to have his moment as he stuck the small piece in his mouth and moved to place something on the back of Calliope's neck.
When Evander next spoke and the words came not from his mouth, but Calliope's, both of Keion's eyebrows shot up in fascination. "Oh Evander, this is absolutely brilliant!" He crouched next to his sister, studying her as if it would make him understand how the device worked. "Yes, I'm sure we could come up with some great uses for this. I'm sure Cyrus will be quite pleased. At the very least, it'll help keep Calli a bit quieter." He chuckled, quickly moving out of reach of his sister.
“It’s undoubtedly the start of something.” Evander mouthed, the words springing from Calliope’s tongue. “There are more things that I want to try. But for now, I’ll settle for a moment’s peace.” Calliope then shut her mouth, smiling as Evander did. The elder brother sipped his drink, eyes sparkling with mischief.

Calliope's eyes narrowed at both her brothers, reflexively going to stick out her tongue at Keion as he darted out of reach as she swiped at him. Even though her mouth didn't move under her control. Because of that invention on the back of her neck that let Evander use her mouth to speak. Oh, both of them were gonna have it coming for them.
Actually. Her eyes glittered as she reached into a pocket for one of the marbles she used on her soldiers and flicked it at Keion's forehead before he got too far away. On connecting with his skin, it would spark and frizz up his hair with static shock. She would have tossed one at Evander but she wasn't sure how it would interfere with the device in his mouth. But, he didn't need to know that, though he probably did with how smart he was. Still she turned in her chair and dramatically waggled her eyebrows as she held up the second marble.
Who said getting older meant they had to be mature? Besides, she didn't start it.

Keion was about to share in another drink with Evander when he realized Calli was moving and had something in her hand. Before he could figure out what it was and what to do, she had flicked it at his forehead. It punked off of him and he felt the strange sensation of heat on his skin that traveled up into his hair. He felt a jolt and winced, carefully reaching up to pat his hair back into place. "Well, that wasn't very nice of you," he said in a joking tone.
When Calli turned to face Evander with another marble in hand, Keion chuckled and shook his head, "You better set her free before she decides to use her hammer on us instead. Besides, have you done any studies on if extended wear of this causes any harm to either party?" It was a question of concern for both of his siblings but also a question of pure curiosity.
Evander resisted the urge to roll his eyes at Keion before flipping the case back open. The spider would immediately retract itself from Calliope’s neck and start to scuttle back to Evander - quick as a flash, returning to the case before Evander placed the molar inside and snapped it shut once again. Keion was no fun.
“I guess we won’t find out today,” Evander said casually, going back to his drink as if nothing of consequence had just occurred. He looked to his siblings - blank-faced with scrutinizing eyes as if expecting a similar show-and-tell from his siblings.

The moment that the spider thing, now that she saw what it looked like, was off her neck, she immediately stuck her tongue out at Keion. "I wasn't actually gonna throw it at Van. Didn't know how it would affect his invention." For all that she was more reckless than her brothers, she very well knew better than to toss something like one of her shock marbles at an enchantment that she didn't know how it would affect something that Evander made. She'd never intentionally screw up something that he'd made.
And then an idea came to mind and she turned to Evander with a bright, curious gleam in her eye. "Hey Van, do you think that would work on someone who was wearing one too? Like you wearing one linked to me while I was wearing one linked to Kei? And would it be your voice or mine then that came from Kei?"

Keion watched the small metal spider crawl quickly back to Evander, shaking his head slightly in amusement when Calliope immediately stuck her tongue out at him. "Well, it's nice to hear there is some sense left in that head of yours," he winked at Calli and finally sunk down into a chair at the table, setting his glass down at the same time. He still had a bemused smile on his face. Spending time with his sibling always immediately lifted his mood, no matter what antics they got up to.
He turned his attention back to Calli as she voiced her question, raising an eyebrow at her and turning the same look to Evander, waiting for his answer.
Evander shrugged at Calliope’s question, his face starting to shift back to its normal flat expression. “I don’t see what purpose that would serve,” He answered, going to pick up his drink, “Why complicate things needlessly? It’s the simplicity that makes it beautiful.” Evander sipped, thoughtful. “But I’d like it to extend beyond speech. Imagine,” The corner of his mouth twitched in a smile, “A flesh and blood marionette. Such possibilities.”
