The peace that formerly reigned in Terra Nova has eroded, now little more than a memory. War ravages the continent. Disputes divide kingdoms; ideals divide families. The quest for power consumes absolutely and indiscriminately. None are immune to its allure.
Who will rise and who will fall? Only time—and ambition—will tell.

Cassian stepped through the door of his study and into the room that had become known to him as his meeting ground with the queen of Arynn Frey. He had sent a messenger with a letter ahead of time, requesting that they have a conversation about matters of state. There were yet a great many things for them to figure out together, but for now he would simply address the most pressing things.
He was dressed like a king and his crown sat on his head. He entered into the room, expecting to see the queen already waiting, as was typical.

Kimora was both surprised and not terribly surprised to hear that Cassian wanted a word with her. She had, at the time, being in the middle of a discussion about settling in the Dresmondi with her husband Kite. As things had been winding down and it was hardly a conversation that couldn't be had at another time, she had made her excuses and ensured that she was prepared to receive such an important guest. Some tea was prepared as always, as Arynn Frey's monarch sat atop her throne and waited patiently.
When Cassian arrived, the queen would greet him with a nod of the head of recognition of his status. "Greetings your majesty, what is it that brings you here today on such short notice? Certainly not ill-tidings I hope."

"Certainly not." Cassian clarified quickly, a head nod returned to her. "Simply a visit to catch up on recent updates. I know my ambassador has come here already but I thought a personal visit was in order." He took the seat he always did, and didn't drink the tea, per usual too.
"I think you'll be pleased to know that a date has officially been set for the wedding of your son and my sister, per our contract. Hiems 822." It was a year from now. It gave them plenty of more time for the heart to grow fonder and all that good stuff.

Kimora listened to Cassian's explanations, allowing herself to relax a little bit. "And after that date, perhaps you'll feel comfortable enough to drink the tea?" There was a slight tease behind the queen's words. Ironically enough, Cassian didn't have to fear poison, not from Kimora. She wasn't so stupid as to try and dispose of him like that. Should she wish to be rid of the young and ambitious king, then she would have to try a completely different approach altogether. "Thank you for warning us about the... Problem with the Eldouir. I can't say that it comes as a terrible surprise. Even in Arynn Frey, we've heard tales of that family, especially Hiram." The queen took a sip of her own drink. "I am surprised however that you seem so reluctant to accept out help. We offer it freely."

Cassian didn't quite smile, but his face softened as if he might, though his lips fell short in turning upward.
"I am not much of a tea drinker." He admitted to her. Though taking tea was common in polite society, he would rather have had a glass of water himself. It wasn't just her tea he didn't drink--he didn't drink anyone's tea. Perhaps in Arynn Frey the threat didn't exist as much as it did for the king of Nevermere, a land of women capable of brewing deadly potions in their kitchens...
"We did not accept help simply because we have no need of it." Cassian said cordially, spreading his hands as if to say 'of course'. "The threat was quelled within minutes, though they did manage to destroy a significant amount of the palace...the Eldouirs haven't returned. Even my own soldiers quickly returned to my kingdom. The port key you provided me with was essential to getting troops there quickly. In a way, Arynn Frey did help."

Claiming to not be much of a tea drinker was nothing sort of anathema to Kimora who had dedicated a surprising amount of her life to the beverage (when she wasn't doing "queen" things that was). She decided against commenting however, some part of her curious to know if the young king might not actually have some sort of fear of the drink simply through knowing just how it was that the original council members of Arynn Frey had met their ends. For the time being of course, Cassian didn't have to worry about such things.
His next words earned a slight frown from Kimora. It was all calculated of course. It wasn't disapproval that Cassian would read, more of a perplexity as if the queen was quite certain that there was something here that she must have missed or misunderstood. "You must realize, your majesty that their threat won't be ended until the Eldouir - or at least their leaders - are dead." She would leave a brief pause before continuing. "Oh, I have no doubt that your soldiers and witches can handle the gifted but then men and women of Lorendale? Are you really to be protecting them as well? Perhaps things have changed but it surprises me that they would so willingly accept the protection of a foreign power."

"It is a delicate thing indeed, being technically foreign and yet having royal Lorendale blood running through my veins." Cassian said, only stiffening slightly. Kimora was much more forward with the things she had to say now, and he could not help but hear the doubt in what she said. The last time they had spoken he had hinted at his intentions with Lorendale and she had supported him, but now she sounded...well, whatever the word, he bookmarked it. An interesting point to dwell on later.
"While my witches can quell the family, there was much unrest from the people of Lorendale when my forces were among them. As regent, it is my duty to see to the well-being of Lorendale...and yet to listen to the people, too." Clearly she could hear the dilemma. Of course, he knew how he planned to handle it all, even if he wasn't disclosing it.
"At the end of the day, Nevermere saved Lorendale, and surely not for the last time." His lips took on a pleasant resting place, not exactly a smile but still something light. Lorendale had asked Arynn Frey for help against Coheed not long ago, and Arynn Frey had resisted. Of course, it had been the decision of the Council of Five and not Kimora, but part of being the monarch was assuming the sins of those who ruled before. Unfortunately, Arynn Frey was not considered an essential ally to Lorendale. But of course, that could change under Cassian's impending rule.
"As for the Eldouir," Cassian said, circling back around, "they are a dangerous enemy, to be sure, and I am not so eager to send my forces after them. I value every soldier's life too greatly to do that. We intend to keep tabs on their activities and make a plan." He cocked his head just a little. "I wonder, your majesty, if you have any thoughts to pursuing the family? Arynn Frey has yet to fall victim to their magic, and I pray you never do...but are they a threat you feel?"

Kimora couldn't help but smile as Cassian mentioned the Lorendaler's response to the presence of his troops in the capital. "No nation likes to think itself dependent upon another, no matter how true it might be." Kimora cautioned the younger monarch aware of his heritage and past and equally of his ambitions for the future.
"If I may your majesty... It has been my observation that it's often the strongest swimmers who tend to drown. They underestimate the currents..." The queen allowed the sentiment to linger for a few moments, hoping that Cassian would see just what she might have meant by it. "I'm old enough to remember the last time that Lorendale went to war with its gifted. It was a war that they very nearly didn't win." She had been a good deal younger and still far away from the absolute power but she had watched from afar with the rest of her family. "Even if it is just the Eldouirs, I would advise that you treat them with the utmost caution. There is little more dangerous than madmen with a thirst for power. They are a wound I wouldn't allow to fester."
Easily said but it didn't exactly help the young king with the issue. "I understand your concerns..." She wouldn't have wanted to send the Peacekeepers chasing after the family. "I would suggest at the very least keep track of the family. I'll admit that I haven't ever met any of them - although from what I've been told, that may well be a blessing - but from what rumors that have reached us, they are dangerous and ambitious. I doubt that they will have left Lorendale to go and seek some form of retirement on a beach."

Cassian took the queen's caution, finding an irony in them that he wouldn't give voice to. Instead, he maintained his demeanor, eyes attentive, listening, even if he had nothing directly to say on the matter she attempted to broach.
"Another matter I wish to bring to you," Cassian said, "is a proposal to expedite the fine-tuning of our alliance. There are certain things I would like to prevent that I believe your magic could help with--namely the unsanctioned use of port keys to enter my lands." He tilted his head ever so slightly.
"Were you aware of the visit one of your Ministers made to my kingdom?"

Kimora frowned thoughtfully when Cassian mentioned the issue of Port Keys. It was something that the queen herself had been putting some thought into lately herself (not that she was about to confess that much to the young king). What was extremely practical and served them on an almost daily basis could equally become a fatal flaw that allowed all manner of enemies into their living rooms before they had time to react. "I can see your problem." The queen conceded. "I dare say there is most certainly something that can be done about it but it would likely be a more complicated enchantment. After all, you still want some of the portkeys to be of use."
When it came to visiting ministers, the queen raised her eyebrows in a way that could have been interpreted as either surprise or some form of innocence, failing to see why the matter would need to be drawn to her attention. Despite having faith in the new ministers, Kimora did like to keep an eye on them. After all, if she'd taken back power, so could others who fancied more themselves. There was only one minister whom she could think of who could possibly have made such a trip.
"If it's Cyrus Blackwood you are referring to, I was aware that he'd gone on a venture of some kind." The queen had been aware purely because some of her sources had informed her that the man was no longer around Arynn Frey. "I trust it was just a matter of business."
