The peace that formerly reigned in Terra Nova has eroded, now little more than a memory. War ravages the continent. Disputes divide kingdoms; ideals divide families. The quest for power consumes absolutely and indiscriminately. None are immune to its allure.
Who will rise and who will fall? Only time—and ambition—will tell.

5 whole years of Heir Apparent goodness! When I started the site, I knew I was hunkering down for the long haul, but I never could have predicted the numerous twists and turns this roleplay site has seen. Hundreds of plots, characters, and members have come and gone, all leaving marks on the site. I am so very thankful for those who have invested. Because you keep coming back, keep getting on, and keep writing, Heir Apparent has the legacy it does today. Three cheers to us!

(this thread is for @catrin )
Kaalim was finding the will again to connect back with his people, Izen and Rian had pulled him from his hut and perhaps instilled a new fire. It was just a small flame and needed sticks to grow, the first log he was going to tinder into the pit was his Parabolti. He had been thinking for a while on how to improve their training, he didn't want men to train them, no. They wouldn't be fair. The Parabolti needed a true woman's touch, so he had a few things to talk over with the head of the Parabolti. So Kaalim had sent for @catrin a daughter of a proud warrior Dion Leonson.
Kaalim had sent for Catrin and have her come join him on the edge of Gilead where the Parabolti currently trained. He would be there surveying the women as he waited.
Catrin strode through the village, her chin titled up defiantly but her eyes remaining steadily ahead so as not to accidentally meet the gaze of any of the men. She didn't feel like dealing with the grumblings of one who didn't approve of her station within Coheed. Kaalim had called on her and therefore she had much more important things to attend to.
She made it through Gilead without any incidents occurring and moved just as quickly through their training grounds until she spotted Kaalim. She stopped beside him, throwing him a quick glance but remaining quiet and waiting for him to acknowledge her.

Kaalim's eyes remained on the women training, they looked like ducklings on frozen water. He had also saw how quickly the atmosphere changed when he, a man and the Chieftain, appeared and watched. They looked timid, lacked confidence, and some even retreated behind other women. Nothing was jumping out as impressive to Kaalim so when @catrin approached he greeted her with a low dip of his head. His Parabolti creation had fell to the way side, Isolde abandoned the post and Wren had denied also wanting to help, they made a strong line that only Cambria women mattered. Kaalim refused to let this idea die, giving women the right to be warriors had his best leverage to making them equals.
After a few more moments Kaalim spoke, "How is their progress? Do you have a solid count of how many women are in service?"
Catrin grimaced at Kaalim's questioning, knowing the answers she had were not going to please her Chieftain. "The ones who have stuck by and continued their training are doing well, but those numbers are low. Too many are still scared of what the men might think. They don't always show up and when they do, they're too busy watching for men to focus on training."
She huffed, crossing her arms across her chest, "There is only so much I can do to push them if they are too afraid to pick up their weapons."

With the pressures of Nevermere pressing down on him his next outburst that came out of Kaalim wasn't like him, "Grow a spine sometime," he began, he didn't move or act erratically but he was looking at her suddenly reflecting on his own words and he shut up. Frustrated clearly Kaalim crossed his arms and remained silent for a bit, "Look, I can't be every where policing men Catrin. What I am trying to say is you women have to stand up and be proud, start smacking enough heads and earning some hard respect might be just what is needed to earn some respect," and he knew that would come with some respite so another sigh eluded him, they needed to get that respect first he second guessed (a side affect of his paranoia) himself thinking about 'WWWD' (what would Willa Wren do?), "but...no....ergh, fuck. Don't just go slapping men that's not effective, I mean that's how I got respect but yeah if their to afraid to pick up a bladder they won't punch a man."
Rubbing his face for a second he finally crossed his arms over his chest staring back out at the women, "Do you think seeking the aide of some Cambrian warriors to help would put some comfort in them?"
Catrin did not flinch away from Kaalim's outburst, nor did she respond to it. Her mouth clenched shut, but the fire in her eyes showed just how much she did not appreciate being shouted at. She remained quiet while he spoke, allowing him to talk his way through whatever was going on in his mind.
At some point she looked away, her attention falling on her soldiers training down below. She could admit to herself that he was right. It was not an easy task, going against years of culture. Years of women being nothing more than bodies to bare children. But if they were going to successfully change that, they had to all grow some spine. And she would have to be the one to push them.
"I don't know, Kaalim," she answered him, tension rising in her. "I fear bringing the Cambrians into this would only encourage them to leave, rather than to stay and fight here. It would be far too easy of an escape option." She also worried that he would see fit to replace her with a Cambrian, someone with more experience and more fight in them. She would have to prove to him that only she was fit to lead their women.
"I will start being harder on them. I will give them ultimatums and whip them into shape. I promise you, Kaalim. And I am sorry I have let you down thus far."

Kaalim hadn't thought about that, was it that tempting for them to flee? Surely he wasn't that out of touch with things? Suddenly he was questioning himself again like he did five years ago. What could he offer Isolde if he couldn't offer the Parabolti? However it was something to consider now, until then...
"You have nothing to be sorry about," Kaalim growled softly, "I will help, I seem to have grown negligent of things, I fear Nevermere will bite at that and try to remove me from my position....I must do better."
Catrin's eyes flashed at the idea of Kaalim being replaced and she stood up a little straighter. "There is no one better fit to lead our people than you, Kaalim. I know Nevermere has done great things for us, but this is our kingdom. Your kingdom. Not theirs. They should not have a say in who our leaders are."
She fell silent, realizing her outburst and fearing she had spoken out of turn. She clenched her mouth shut to stop anymore words from pouring from her mouth, staring angrily down at her soldiers again. After a bit of silence she spoke quietly, "Help if you wish. I will not allow my shortcomings to effect you. You have my promise."

Kaalim was now staring at Catrin during her outburst, this was another moment that had old memories play in his mind. An outburst like this one might have once yielded a firm hard slap, it had for Kaalim probably for Catrin too but not today. Instead Kaalim saw something entirely different in Catrin's concern, he had perhaps overlooked a great deal of support from his people thinking it sat all in his shoulders when his people had shouldered some of the burden. They had stuck it out with him, rolled with most of the changes. Few had raised to rebel against him.
A smirk spread across his face, "Let them try though," earthy brown eyes flashed for a second towards the mountains, "Until then, I want to speak with @willa of Cambria, you need something that sets your unit a part," Kaalim held up his right arm to show a crudely drawn run, he wanted to inspect it for herself.
As her outburst was allowed to pass, some of the tension fell away from her shoulders. In some ways she was not so different from the women who cowered on the training grounds at the sight of Kaalim. She still feared punishment for acting in certain ways. She was simply lucky that her mouth worked quicker than her mind did most days.
She turned and squinted at Kaalim's arm as he raised it, then her eyes widened slightly. She had certainly heard of the runes the Cambrian women received on their arms. Her eyes flicked up to meet Kaalim's gaze. "Do you truly think they would share these runes with us?"
The prospect excited her. To be able to be even stronger than they were now and stronger than the men… It could be the confidence boost the other women needed.

Kaalim had to pause and think on it, truthfully he felt he already knew the answer giving the relationship shared between Kaalim and Wren these days. She had blatantly and metaphorically spit in his face during the festival games so his reply was only in earnest, "No," he didn't want to crush her hope to quickly, "Yet it won't stop me from asking still, the women of Coheed have never given the women of Cambria reason to deny you assistance...it won't hurt to ask."
Finally Kaalim turned his full massive frame to face Catrin, "Would you accept perhaps my assistance in training beside you? It will be yours to conduct, I will just be there to help and if they see us," he waved a hand between them before pointing at the other women, "working together maybe it will mean something, comfort per say."
Catrin's features faltered when Kaalim expressed his doubt in Cambria sharing their runes. It didn't surprise her, not really. She knew of Wren and how she came by Coheed from time to time to check on the women, but actively sharing Cambria's power with the women in Coheed would be a different story.
She grimaced but said nothing more on the matter. It would either happen or it wouldn't, and they would have to continue on regardless. She nodded at Kaalim's next question, "Yes, of course. Perhaps they just need to see that they can fight alongside men without repercussions. There's no one better to prove that than the Chief himself. When would you like to start?"

"When I return from Cambria," he replied earnestly, "Prepare those with the most promise for when I do return we will be going to New Caana," it was their slow growing city to the south of Gilead, it was where Kaalim had hoped to move his male and female warriors in future generations to train and occupy, "I will host a boot camp of sorts with just the Parabolti and myself. Plan for a seasons stay, and speak to none about what I plan to request from Wren."
A bit of excitement ran through Catrin at the future plans. Not only would she train alongside Kaalim, but she would get to travel to a new place within their kingdom.
She bowed her head, something she would only be seen doing for Kaalim. "Of course. I will prepare the women, as well as myself. And I will not speak of anything to do with Cambria." With that, if Kaalim dismissed her she would immediately start for the training grounds. There was no time to waste.
