GOVERNMENT AND MILITARY IN NEVERMERE
GOVERNMENT
Nevermere is governed by an absolute monarchy where the one who wears the crown has final say in all matters. The crown is always passed to the eldest male child of the king, bastards excluded. While the queen that marries the king has influence and power in her own right, she ultimately answers to the king as surely as every other citizen. Those with the greatest power aside from the king are the King's Hand and the King's Witch. The King's Hand has jurisdiction on policy matters and is second only to the king, serving as his voice when he is absent. The King's Witch is in charge of the King's security and is both a weapon and a resource for his majesty. The Captain Commander, whose role in this military kingdom grants him a seat of political importance, is responsible for the day-to-day operations and strategy of the military under the advisement of the king. In times of crisis the King's Hand and the King's Witch both have the power to give orders to the Captain Commander on behalf of the king.
MILITARY
The military in Nevermere has changed drastically since King Julius usurped the throne. Where before it was a rather unofficial, lax thing--by the good fortune of being a kingdom behind an impassable mountain range--it is now a highly trained, elite force. Since the Rainecourts reign all citizens of Nevermere have been required to formally train with the military starting at the age of 12. This requirement lasts until they are 18, at which point they have the choice of continuing on in the military or not. They are all trained to use a sword, and any other weapons they wish to learn would be done on their own time. The witches are encouraged to capitalize upon their magical abilities, typically resulting in military witches being superior with incantations and summoning.ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
All soldiers follow a basic schedule: four days on, one day training, and two days off. Though this is the regular pattern, soldiers are always expected to work when called upon. Days on consist of things like manning the castle, maintaining equipment, patrolling the city of Skia, scouting the valley, and everything in between.Soldiers have border patrol shifts that happen at intervals (typically every couple of months) and last about a week. Naval soldiers similarly spend a week to ten days at sea every couple of months to patrol Nevermerean waters and transport troops. Soldiers stationed in Coheed and Cambria follow a similar schedule.
PAIRED SOLDIERS
Only soldiers that have proven themselves competent and trustworthy are considered for a pairing (no newbies going straight into pairings). Soldiers may express interest in becoming a paired soldier and are submitted for consideration. The Captain of Witch-Paired Soldiers makes pairing recommendations to the Captain Commander, who then approves or rejects them.Only witch-paired soldiers are authorized to activate the werewolf shift, and only in training settings or as a last resort in combat. They are not allowed to train alone until they are evaluated and cleared to do so by the Captain of Witch-Paired Soldiers.
MILITARY RANKS
THE CAPTAIN COMMANDER | Hadrian Usher The highest rank within the military, the Captain Commander is responsible for overseeing the training and stationing of the persons within the military. His word is law among the soldiers.
CAPTAINS | OPEN (Soldier); OPEN (Witch-Paired), OPEN (Naval)
The Captains of the military are competent leaders among the soldiers. They do the Captain Commander's bidding. One focuses on the singular soldiers, one specifically on the witch-paired soldiers, and the other on the Navy.
INQUISITOR GENERAL | Vesper Delvaux
The Inquisitor General is tasked with examining day-to-day military operations to ensure the highest standard of conduct is maintained by all soldiers. They conduct reviews of military leadership, review and investigate incidents of misconduct, and recommend and/or carry out disciplinary action.
SERGEANTS | OPEN (Cambria); Aldrich Abbott (Coheed, senior); Kasper Van Zant (Coheed, junior)
Sergeants are entrusted with full command of operations in conquered territories or areas of military conflict. When designated as the highest-ranking official in a particular territory, they assume the rank of “Field Sergeant,” putting them above other sergeants in the chain of command.
LIEUTENANTS | Aldrich Abbott
Lieutenants are responsible for the combative capabilities of the soldiers under their command. Working closely with the captains, they look for ways to better train their soldiers and address weaknesses.
OFFICERS | Evanthe Curran, Lucia Jourdemayne
Officers ensure the orders of lieutenants (and other superior officers) are executed as directed. They live and work among soldiers and are usually responsible for addressing and reporting incidents of misconduct.
PRIVATES | Octavius Wulfbrand , Zarha Sliva , Keir Delaney
The basic soldiers are independent soldiers who stand guard and patrol. Witch-paired soldiers are those that work in pairs, a witch with a male soldier who is of werewolf age, and are typically mainly put on patrols, especially at the borders. There are also naval privates, who spend most of their shifts on boats or on the docs, combat medics who tend to the health of the military when not in combat, combat and magic trainers, and more. Privates who have distinguished themselves in service are awarded the rank of "Private First Class." These are marked with a star.
ENLISTED STAFF | None
These soldiers are still members of the military but have been taken out of formal training for disciplinary or other reasons (for example, an inhibiting physical injury). They perform the chores required for the military to function (serving in the mess, cleaning equipment, washing uniforms, etc.).
ROYAL GUARDS | Benedict Delaney
Accomplished guards who directly monitor the king. They are hand-picked and vetted by the Captain Commander. Royal guards heed the commands of the Captain Commander but otherwise are not beholden to the Captains or other soldiers. Consider them a special force in the military. There are only about 18 Royal Guards. *DM Eloell if interested in playing a royal guard.
SPECIAL DESIGNATIONS
Some soldiers are awarded special designations based on skills or specific training. These are not ranks, but additional credentials that make soldiers eligible for certain opportunities. Currently, there are two designations that soldiers can hold: RANGER | Grant Delaney
Rangers are elite soldiers, specializing in conducting raids and assault missions inside enemy territory. These soldiers are trained to engage in clandestine operations, withstand wilderness survival, and endure capture and interrogation.
DRILL INSTRUCTORS | Octavius Wulfbrand , Aldrich Abbott
Drill instructors are trained to instruct soldiers (at home or abroad) in combat. Having this designation is a prerequisite for anyone ranked lieutenant or above, but can be attained by a soldier of any rank.
MEDIC | Koralia Barkirtis (Head), Noah Prowze
Medics are specialists trained in treating illnesses, injuries, and diseases. They provide medical assistance and treat medical emergencies during combat, marches, and training.
