AUGUSTUS RAINECOURT
GENERAL
Age: Thirty Five
Birth Season: Fall
Occupation: Royal Adviser
Kingdom: Lorendale
Citizen Status: Royal
PHYSICAL
Weight: 175 lbs
Body Description: Augustus looks every bit the royal he was raised to be. He is tall with broad shoulders and a muscular form, maintained through consistent exercise and combat training. He is always well-groomed and well-dressed but never flashy or ostentatious. Whether he is buttoned into a fine jacket at court or toiling with rolled-up sleeves in the stables, no one would ever mistake Augustus for anything other than what he is: royalty.
PERSONAL
Aspirations/Ambitions: The preservation of Lorendale and the Rainecourt family legacy.
Alignment: Lawful Neutral
Reputation: Augustus has carefully cultivated his reputation, both in Lorendale and in Arynn Frey. In Lorendale, he is seen as a man of the people. He makes sure he is seen out in the towns of and streets of Loren as often as he's seen at court. Early on, he won the affection of commoners through acts of service and generosity. He's the kind to hop off his horse and help an old woman cross the street (especially if people are watching). Many nobles see his affinity for the common man odd, but endearing. In warmth, ease, and natural charm are enough to smooth over any eyebrows his penchant for visiting the towns might raise. From commoner to king, Augustus is the kind of politician you feel you could sit down and have a flagon of mead with while bearing your life story. Even so, he carries the gravitas of a natural-born leader and is a credit to his name.
It seems to many that his likeability flows from genuine goodness. Like many things about Augustus, this is only half the truth. Augustus is as skilled and ambitious, as deft a political actor as any other in his class. He could sell ice to a polar bear, and more often than not he is selling his every move as honorable and righteous. In reality, he is neither of those things. Anyone who has ever been on the receiving end of Agustus's vengeance knows as much. He is slow to forgive and even slower to forget. Any perceived slight is noted, filed away, and taken into consideration even years after the fact.
Augustus's marriage was purely political and largely loveless. Their mutual commitment to a restored Lorendale is the basis for their marriage. Outside of that, there is little love or attraction between them. Augustus has had numerous affairs over the years, a fact which is well-known to Phaedra, and makes no apologies for them. He will do as he pleases - though he does not grant Phaedra similar liberties
Combat Experience: As befitting a man of his rank and education, Augustus is a skilled fighter trained by some of Lorendale’s finest warriors. His primary weapon is a flamberge two-handed sword gifted to him by a friend in Arynn Frey.
MAGIC
HISTORY
Tale: Augustus was born the second-eldest son of Eleanor Rainecourt and Phillius Marx. It wasn’t long before they realize their son had inherited a seizure disorder from the Marx side of the family. A bad “spell” would sometimes leave him bedridden for weeks. Eleanor concealed his condition as best she could, not wanting to expose her sons weakness. Though the spells became fewer and farther between, Augustus still lives in fearful anticipation of when the next seizure will come.
In spite of his condition, or perhaps because of it, Augustus took nothing for granted and took advantage of every opportunity. He was no entitled child of royalty. It was through hard work and cunning he was going to have it all. He was highly attentive in his studies and was educated in everything from history, to mathematics, to literature, to swordplay. Augustus followed the path that was set out for him, determined to be an asset to his family and - most importantly - feed his natural ambition.
With his good looks, natural charm, and Rainecourt name, Augustus showed little effort to restrain himself when it came to women. When he was a young man, he had a more serious affair with a baronetess that resulted in a pregnancy. Though Coraline and Augustus cared for one another deeply, they were under no illusion they would marry. Coraline kept the child (a boy, named Emilian) and Augustus supported her, believing it the honorable thing to do. Augustus hoped to see her happily married, but she never wed, saying he was the love of her life and she needed no other. He is still an active part of his son’s and Coraline's lives.
Augustus’s parents arranged an advantageous marriage to Phaedra Rainecourt-Marx , strengthening an important military alliance with her family. Though they did not marry for love, as two young, attractive people, their marriage started off as one of affection and romance. They both valued service to one’s family and country, which provided them with a strong foundation. Their relationship has deteriorated over the years, for a variety of reasons. Their oldest son, Max, inherited the seizure disorder, and his condition is worse than his father's was at his age, whereas his illegitimate child, Emilian, did not. Augustus has continued to have extramarital affairs, often with much younger women, and has continued his romance with Coraline (he hides none of this from Phaedra). Phaedra assumes the role of caretaker during Augustus's spells, and he shows little gratitude in return. The resentment built between them is seemingly insurmountable, but their mutual commitment to their marriage and service to their kingdom makes their marriage tenable.
Not too long after they were married, the heir race took place in Lorendale. Augustus, and everyone else for that matter, expected Eleanor to pick him to participate. Instead, she picked Nya, concerned that Augustus's condition would make him a liability. Stinging with rejection, Augustus took an ambassadorship in Arynn Frey to leave Lorendale (temporarily) behind. When the second heir race began, Augustus petitioned to return to Lorendale but was commanded by the royal court to remain to Arynn Frey. Coheed had recently declared war on Lorendale, and the relationships he'd built were too valuable to waste at a time when they needed Arynn Frey's aid.
While in Arynn Frey, Augustus furthered his education. He developed a deep respect for the kingdom and strengthened the political connections between them. In particular, he'd come to respect how they'd managed to maintain the integrity of their culture and ways at a time when Terra Nova was becoming increasingly interconnected. Since his niece's marriage, he had been trying to find a suitable replacement for his ambassadorship so that he can return and support her as queen. Finally, in autumna 826, he was granted permission to leave his post in Arynn Frey and join the court as a Royal Advisor.
