(for Ophelia Rainecourt )
“Stormcrest!”
Ber’s name caught his attention as he entered the training grounds, intending practice his archery or maybe find someone to spar against, and he turned to see one of the lieutenants gesturing for him to approach. He did so.
“Yes, sir?”
“You will be accompanying Princess Ophelia when she leaves the castle today.”
He—What?
“One of her usual guards was injured during training, so for the remainder of today, you will be taking his place as part of the Princess’s escort. Your orders are simple: let nothing harm her, and protect her at all costs. Is that understood?”
“Y-Yes, sir.”
“Any questions?”
Why me? “No, sir.”
“Very well. Report to the castle gate; they are leaving shortly. Dismissed.”
Reeling from the sharp turn his expectations for the day had abruptly taken, Ber started automatically heading for the gate before his mind caught up with his feet. Did he have everything he needed? What did he even need? He had his sword, but because he had been expecting to train rather than be put on duty, he didn’t have any—armor. Ber stopped in his tracks, turned, and began jogging back toward the barracks.
Stars above, how was he picked for something like this? He’d never guarded anyone before, let alone a member of the royal family. What if he messed up, and the Princess was hurt, and the King, who Ber was pretty sure didn’t even know Ber existed and maybe that was a good thing— what if the King found out that his sister was hurt on Ber’s watch, and got angry about it, and– and where was his— Ber dug out a gambeson and accompanying chain mail shirt, quickly shucking the loose tunic he trained in and replacing it with the more uncomfortable but more protective items of clothing, before heading quickly back toward the gate.
Just before rounding he corner, he slowed down and took a deep breath, running a hand over his face. He could do this. It was just like going on patrol, except it was guarding a specific individual instead of the city, and that specific individual was the King’s sister and Nevermere’s beloved Princess. He took another deep breath to try to chase away the trepidation threatening to choke him. It would be fine. Everything would be fine. Then, once he’d soothed his nerves as much as he could, he stepped around the corner and approached the small group of people waiting by the gate.
Only upon seeing the other guards – fellow soldiers rather than royal guards, though to him, they seemed infinitely more prepared and confident – did he realize he’d forgotten his helmet.
Well, there was no turning back now. Arranging his features in such a way that they did not betray he way his stomach had simultaneously twisted into a knot and shriveled up, Ber greeted the rest of the escort politely and turned just in time to see the Princess approaching. Despite spending a significant portion of the past decade inside the walls of Rainecourt Castle, he had never met any royalty before, and shoulder to shoulder with the other soldiers, he stood a little straighter before bowing in greeting. “Your Royal Highness.”
Distinctly aware of the air on his face, he wished desperately that he had remembered his helmet. He also wished desperately that the ground would swallow him whole, or at least that someone else had been assigned this task. He could feel his nerves starting to return and rushed to calm them. Glancing at Princess Ophelia, he reasoned that because the Rainecourts were well established as the royal family, surely any enemies would have been weeded out and eradicated by now, right? No one would be actively trying to harm the Princess, probably, so in theory, this wouldn’t be too difficult a task. And you know what, Ber? He told himself firmly. Even if someone was trying to put her in danger, you’d stop them because you’re a good soldier, and good soldiers follow orders.
And he’d been ordered to protect her, so that’s what he’d do.
He’d almost managed to settle his thoughts when a singular question struck him, just as they left the castle grounds and began to descend into the city: stars above, what if someone tried to kill her?
