The eldest prince of Nevermere, the firstborn and first son of King Cassian and Queen Iliana, was four. There were celebrations in the streets by commoners. Nobles toasted the life of the young prince in their homes. The king and queen, along with the uppermost tier of Nevermerean society, celebrated with the young man on a freshly finished ship that the king had commissioned for Cassian II, called Cass, the future king of Nevermere. More than just that, if Cassian's plans succeeded. His son would not only rule his kingdom; he would rule them all.
The ship was not the biggest that could have been made, but it was decked out with all the bells and whistles that a monarch taking to the sea could want. Its sails were marked with the Nevermerean Rainecourt crest, and there was more than one place in which gold had been inlaid into wood. The night's journey would take them down the coast of Skia at a leisurely pace, and once back at Shadows Landing there would be fireworks on the beach. While on board, guests would enjoy music played by the greatest musicians in Nevermere, a smorgasbord of Nevermerean and Lorendale fingerfoods and cuisines, unlimited drinks, and a servant-manned privy just below deck that sported a copper chamber pot with folded parchment.
Call it fancy.
The ship was still loading. Guests would climb the safety roped gang plank to the gloved hand of assistance. Coats and gifts would be received for them, and as they moved onto the deck their names would be announced by a caller. Most who had already arrived were not listening. There were plenty of children present, you see, only the finest bred in the land, and more than one parent was intent on arranging what matches they could.
Cassian stood on the quarter deck, a bit removed from the main activity on the ship, currently alone except for Regan, casting a serious eye over the waters beyond Skia.
