MARRIAGE & FAMILY
MARRIAGE & WEDDING TRADITIONS
Marriage is a time of great celebration in Coheed. A man's first marriage celebration is typically rather modest, but with each additional marriage the cake gets bigger, the music gets louder, and more ale is served. Polygamy is expected in Coheed because formerly only Coheed warriors are allowed to reproduce, though Chieftain Kaalim has allowed workers to take a single wife. The number of wives a man has is a direct reflection of his wealth, since he must pay for his bride (and the price gets heftier depending on who fathered the bride, her beauty, and the fertility of her mother/sisters). The average warrior of Coheed has 2-3 wives. It would be odd for a man to be old and only have 1 wife. All men are expected to have at least two.Divorce is not a thing. Infidelity is punished by the husband in whatever way he sees fit. HE can kill his wife if he chooses, though it would be considered a poor stewardship of his resources.
FAMILY
Being the son of a strong, respectable man is everything in Coheed. It matters not who your mother is but whose son you are. In fact, so much so that each man's surname is the name of his father with a "son" at the end. The concept of family is important because through family one's tribe is grown and strengthened, and the tribe you are from is everythingWomen take no surname, and have a heavy task of nourishing and growing the children, most importantly the boys, into strapping young lads that their fathers can then teach to fight. If a boy is lacking in any way, the mother is blamed.
Family dynamics aren't typically warm and fuzzy. The wife and mother is a means to an end, and even young boys start disrespecting them as they grow, just as men do. The women are a resource. The men care for their wives for this reason, though not as an equal, not as they care for other men and sons.
