SOCIETY & CULTURE
HONOR
Citizens of Coheed value honor above all else, and holding its hand comes shame. It is honorable to have many wives and many sons and to be the son of a noted warrior. Women have no honor. Men who desert their tribes are bearers of shame. Men who who do not know their father are products of shame and likely never to have honor.MATURITY
A male in Coheed reaches maturity between the ages of fifteen and seventeen after he participates in a ceremony called First Blood. All boys are trained to be warriors from the earliest age, preparing them for First Blood and their futures. In this ceremony, they are matched with a boy of similar build, placed in a rink, given weapons, and forced to fight one another until first blood is drawn. The individual who draws the blood goes on to become a Coheed warrior. The individual who has blood drawn is put into the workforce where he will spend his life hunting, gathering, and farming to feed the women and warriors of Coheed. The maturity age for girls is when they have their first blood through their menstrual cycle.
GENDER ROLES
Men are leaders, rulers, warriors, and providers. Women are treated like cattle--they treat their cattle well but the cows have no say in affairs of any kind. An individual husband can, of course, treat his wife as he desires, but maltreatment is not frowned upon.Concerning homosexuality, it is a grievous practice and its consequences vary by tribe, ranging anywhere from amputation to death.
*After the occupation of Nevermere, women have become more involved in Coheed. They have now warriors and workers. A special division of women warriors called The Parabolti are an elite set of all Coheedain women warriors trained by Cambrian women and Witches.
OCCUPATION
There are few occupations in the warmongering Coheed, and they only go to the men. All women are born and bred to produce children for their husbands, preferably males, and otherwise spend their time raising children and caring for their homes. The men have a few more occupation options, but not many. In general, a man is either a warrior, which is self-explanatory, or a worker. Workers range from farmers to hunters to gatherers to various tradesfolk like blacksmiths, tanners, carpenters, stonemasons, or any other skill that helps build up a kingdom and prepare the warriors for warfare (so they have many, many blacksmiths). Within the warrior occupation, there are various military leadership ranks that one can attain within his respective tribe. Each tribe is also in possession of a Witch Doctor. These individuals do not practice real magic, but they are the general healer, doctor, and spiritual guide within every tribe, revered by the men and women and believed to have the power to curse and bless. Witch Doctors choose their replacement apprentice when the boy is young, before he had engaged in the First Blood ceremony.
CITIZEN STATUS
All citizens of Coheed fall under 6 statuses: Chief (head of a tribe), Witch Doctor (very specific role), Warrior (a man who drew first blood in his First Blood ceremony), Worker (a man who had blood drawn first in his First Blood ceremony), Child (kids who have not gone through First Blood ceremony), and Woman (just...a woman).STANDARD OF LIVING
Coheed’s warrior class enjoys the highest standard of living. Within that class, the more successful you are in battle, the more wealth you accumulate. Coheedsmen pay a dowry to warriors who marry their daughters, so having more wives also increases your wealth. A woman’s standard of living is tied to her husband’s wealth, as they have no property of their own (after all, they are property themselves). Widows have no share in their husband’s wealth after his death, which makes it essential for them to remarry. Workers live spartan lives with few material possessions beyond what is strictly necessary.
LIFE EXPECTANCY
Citizens of Coheed mostly die from disease, which tends to spread quickly through tribes. If they die of old age then the average lifespan of a woman ends at 45, while men typically see about 50 years. They barely slow down as they get older, but instead seem to maintain the vigor of youth...until one day they keel over.FUNERALS
Coheedsmen are burned on a funeral pyre lit by their eldest son. A brief ceremony recounting the warrior’s life and death is overseen by Coheed’s witch doctor. Funerals for warriors that die in battle or with honor are celebratory affairs, followed by an evening of drinking and debauchery in their honor.TECHNOLOGY
When it comes to technology, liken Coheed to Vikings. Their buildings are typically made of wood, as they are master carpenters, and their weapons and general lifestyle is rather crude.LAND
Coheed possesses every kind of land: green fields ripe for farming, mountains, forests, and coasts. Most of their tribes reside inland, but one of the largest sits at the water and is renowned for their ships.RELATIVE ERA
Viking with an African tribal spin.
