[ For @adeline ]
Xanthe hadn't felt like herself since tribute. It was frustrating in multiple ways. People in the streets seemed to recognize her. They'd all been there. They'd seen the way Hiram had called on her to be taken away to his bedroom. They presumed to know what had happened. Some looked toward her with pity, some with sympathy, and some with suspicion. She ignored their glances and was happy to see that at least some of them had paid it no attention at all. Just another horror in Elderkeep, nothing more.
Her lack of injuries and her boost of energy likely did seem suspicious in a way, but those around her were just happy that she was fulfilling their orders. The cold seasons were coming. Everyone needed their leathers and furs. New boots, coats, and gloves were needed and Xanthe was the best tanner and leather-worker in town if only because she was the youngest and therefore could work a little faster.
In the mornings, as always, she went out to hunt. Her new mark gave her a little extra space and though she would always be competing with others, she did okay. Savi caught a rabbit for himself and Xanthe managed to shoot a few wild turkey, which she exchanged for some sheepskin before returning home. Once there, she went out back behind her hut to hang up the skin to dry and looks at the size of it. She had a specific plan for this skin but she wasn't sure it was quite large enough.
"Embric will not like this plan of yours," Savi said as he sat by her legs. "I don't like it, either."
Embric doesn't have to like it, because we don't intend on telling him, the thought was stern, making the point as clear to Savi as the sun in the sky. Then she knelt down in the dirt and rubbed the top of Savi's head and ears. I know you don't like it, but I won't be able to get this out of my head, so it must happen. This is...all I can think of. Savi leaned his head downward and she pressed her forehead to his, then stood up and sighed. I have a lot of other work to do. Best to get to it.
They walked around to the front of the hut with the intention of going inside, but the appearance of someone with red hair stopped them both in their tracks. Xanthe's heart raced and Savi moved to stand directly behind her legs. "My Queen," Xanthe stammered. "What -- how can I help you?"
