CAM PYETR
GENERAL
Name: Cameron PyetrAge: Thirty-one
Birth Season: Winter
Occupation: Director of the Beldam Containment and Rehabilitation Facility for Witches (known to military leads and “in the know” nobles as the Beldam Home or Beldam, with the reputation as a nursing home or asylum for old, crazy, or problematic women, though that’s not it’s truest purpose)
Kingdom: Nevermere
Citizen Status: Noble
PHYSICAL
Weight: 180
Body Description: Cam has unreproachable posture and a haughty tilt to his chin. He has reasonably pleasant features and maintains his physique with regular, appropriate exercise. He dresses impeccably, high-buttoned shirts and pressed trousers, freshly shined boots, always wearing his family’s signet ring.
PERSONAL
Aspirations/Ambitions: Cam loves two things: order and loyalty. He strives to achieve the former through the latter. He is loyal to his country, to his family, and to the ideals and values that have shaped each. He aspires to do his duty as best he can, to live up to expectations and to achieve success, and he aims to do that whatever it takes. He wants power, yes, and he likes the feeling of being respected and recognized, but he is patient and willing to bide his time, to put in the work to earn the position he knows he deserves at the top.
Alignment: Lawful neutral
Reputation: Cam always knows his place, so his reputation is shaped by the group he’s with. In court he isn’t known, because he understands he’s not there to be heard and so he’s hardly even seen. But at the Containment Facility, he takes his position as “king” of the proverbial kingdom very seriously. In realms where he is the leader, he makes sure that he is known as the leader, through demonstrations of power and intrusive micromanaging. However he is always deferential and polite to those he has no power over, making him well-liked by some and dismissed by others. Anyone who’s worked under him at the facility is probably a little wary of him and may think he has a short temper and a cruel imagination. Outsiders probably only know his family as a respectable, undramatic one and he as the sole offspring of the Pyetr household.
Combat Experience: As a nobleman, Cam was trained in swordplay and combat throughout his childhood and participated in the mandatory military training between 12 and 18. He continues to keep up his technical skills, mostly as a way to stay fit since he has no actual use of combat skills and has never seen combat. He is technically adept but practically inexperienced.
MAGIC
HISTORY
Tale:
Cam was raised the only child of the Pyetr household, the apple of his mother’s critical eye and his aging father’s only hope of a respectable legacy. The Pyetr house is not well known or wealthy, but Cam was raised to be grateful for his place in Nevermere and in his family and to despise those who fought against the society that had been gracious to them.
Cam’s great-grandfather Lexicom Pyetr was the one who started Beldam, borne of the same love for their great nation that drove Cam. The idea was to establish a private, isolated place to keep female military deserters and magical criminals who were too powerful to house in regular prisons but too valuable to kill. These were the witches who wouldn’t obey orders, the teen girls who couldn’t control their magic, the older women who got loose-lipped with military secrets as they aged or who espoused ideas that were harmful to their country. Such women were useful tools of the nation, but they needed to be rehabilitated before they could be introduced or readmitted to military life. Cam’s grandfather donated a remote piece of old family land in the mountains to the crown for the building of the center, a walled, gated, and guarded establishment meant to keep magical deserters from causing more harm to their beloved nation. The prison is too distasteful a necessity to be publicly known, as loyal citizens of Nevermere couldn’t possibly understand the military’s need for such a thing. What is well known is that witches struggling with their gifts or with military life are sent to the Beldam Home, a mountain retreat where they’re taken care of.
Through Cam’s childhood, Cam’s father was often away from their family home in the city to run the facility, but he lacked Lexicom’s strong hand and will. When Cam came of age to help and was allowed to go up to the Beldam Home, he was appalled at how the center had fallen apart. He had grown up hearing from his grandfather about the order and discipline that kept the dangerous women at Beldam under control. He was shocked to find that under his father’s leadership, these volatile women had knitting circles and decorated cells, guards were marrying the witches and getting them pregnant so they could escape serving their full sentences, and the witches took trips at will to visit their family barely getting a slap on the wrist for escaping so long as they returned, as if they had been sent to Beldam for a spa retreat instead of serving their punishment and working to overcome the weaknesses in mind or body that led to their sentences. Cam took full control of the facility from his kind-hearted (weak) father at 24 and committed the facility once again to honor and discipline. New rules, harder punishments, merciless expectations, and grueling conditions became the status quo. Under his unflinching hand, the detainment facility became something like a labor camp, the punishing, reforming facility it was meant to be. Success rates reported to the monarchy are high: more than 30% of women who stay at Beldam leave their sentences on time and return to the military without further complication. A mere 15% die under the pressures of the facility, but if they are too weak for prison, they really shouldn’t have committed crimes, right? And they certainly wouldn’t be strong enough for the rigors of the military. Weaning out weak witches is its own kind of service to the crown.
Cam found a great love for the work of ruling in his position and is looking forward to his next opportunity to exert the strong hand of Nevermere.
