The peace that formerly reigned in Terra Nova has eroded, now little more than a memory. War ravages the continent. Disputes divide kingdoms; ideals divide families. The quest for power consumes absolutely and indiscriminately. None are immune to its allure.
Who will rise and who will fall? Only time—and ambition—will tell.

5 whole years of Heir Apparent goodness! When I started the site, I knew I was hunkering down for the long haul, but I never could have predicted the numerous twists and turns this roleplay site has seen. Hundreds of plots, characters, and members have come and gone, all leaving marks on the site. I am so very thankful for those who have invested. Because you keep coming back, keep getting on, and keep writing, Heir Apparent has the legacy it does today. Three cheers to us!
Drystan moved silently through the estate, which normally would be attributed to the fact that he preferred to mist his legs to move more quickly. But some had a tendency to forget that the man was trained to be silent even without using his Gift. Having that level of control over himself had been drilled into him repeatedly where it was more of a conscious effort to make noise when he moved. However, when it came to certain members of the family, he didn't bother disguising his tendencies and Elena was one such person.
In fact, he was deliberately seeking her out and he had a gift. He'd only told Hiram that he was leaving, had assumed he might pass that on but had a feeling that he probably hadn't and planned to make up for it with something he knew she'd appreciate.
Reaching his destination, he knocked on her door with two short raps on the wood. He kew better than to enter her rooms without permission, thank you very much.

Elena was actually being productive, for once. It wasn't as if she was never productive but her focus in doing her actual job had increased in the last few months and she had some ideas for what she wanted to do as her position of Queen. Perhaps it was time to stop simply basking in the light of her crown and actually begin to rule. What that meant for the dresmondi was yet to be decided. Elena was among the more 'fair' members of her family but being called 'kind' was typically an overstatement.
At the sound of the knocks on her door she looked up from what she was doing at a large desk that had been made for her. Pushing back, she decided to answer the door herself rather than simply allowing entrance. She needed to stretch anyway. When she opened the door and saw Drystan she smiled. "Drystan! I haven't seen much of you since your return. You've been missed," she stated. She pushed the door open further and returned back into her room, allowing Drystan to follow her inside.
There was a slight upturn to his mouth, the closest to a smile he'd worn in months. He would be hard pressed to admit that he had any favorites within the family but if he did, Elena would be one of them. Hence, the gift he'd brought her to make up for his absence that had been the least planned venture he'd ever embarked on since reaching adulthood.
"It is good to see you as well. Apologies for being for being so scarce." He stepped into her room, closing the door behind him before he revealed the bottle of Nevermeran wine he had tucked under his coat. "Perhaps this might make up for it?"

Elena's eyes sparkled when he presented her with a gift. She did so love presents. And wine? Drystan knew her well. She turned the bottle in her hand as she read the label, wondering how different the wine from Nevermere would taste. "This is amazing! I can't wait to taste it!" She said enthusiastically.
Holding the neck of the bottle in one hand she grabbed Drystan's hand and dragged him, if he allowed her, over towards the fire where a couch more plush than nearly any found in the rest of Dresmond was sitting. She sat down and tugged him to sit beside her before she curled her feet up onto the couch and scooted even closer to him, merely centimeters away from touching him.
"Tell me everything about Nevermere! What was it like?" she asked eagerly.
Drystan settled into the couch, a visible sense of relaxation settling on the man in a way that was seldom seen. Certainly never in public and not even among the majority of the family. Maybe a handful of them at the very most.
"It was certainly colder and darker than here or Loren. I have never seen a place so consistently under cloud cover. But it was something that has been normal for them for quite some time and honestly, somewhat fascinating given that you can tell the borders simply where the clouds end." There was enough of an interest in his tone as he talked that belied just how interesting he found the weather alone there. (Maybe in a different life, he'd have had different interests but alas...)

She hadn't expected him to linger on the weather but if it caught his attention that much then it must be notable. She was especially intrigued by the way the clouds ended at the borders. "You said 'for quite some time'. Was it not always like that?" she asked. "Do you think it has to do with their magic? And what was that like? Did you meet any witches?" Much of Nevermere was still a mystery so of course she was interested to learn everything she could.
The bits that he had heard, eaveadropping in on some of the rumors circulating between the soldiers and the commoners, all the way up to some of the elderly, he'd picked up some interesting tidbits.
"Their magic apparently uses curses and some twenty-odd years ago, someone had casted a strong enough curse that it is still in effect even though they've been dead for at least 2 decades now. An anomally from what I was able to gather." There was a hint of a smile creeping up at the edges of his lips, relaxing just a little more.
"I did meet some. Interestingly, it seems that most women are witches, not just those in their military. Some probe their magic as a hobby, and nothing more."

Elena crossed her legs on the couch and turned to fully face Drystan, her knees touching his thighs as she listened intently to all the information he had to offer. A curse that had been strong enough to last beyond the death of the witch who cast it yet it seemed a rare thing too. Fascinating. "So none of the men have magic then?" she asked. It was really interesting that only woman could do magic in Nevermere...yet they were still ruled by a King...how primitive.
"Not at all. And yet they hold more political power than the witches."
It was baffling how backwards it was, where at least in Lorendale, Gifteds had power and rank. But the women of Nevermere didn't even use their power to their advantage when they could just easily rip it from the men.
"One would think that one of the witches would have done something by now about it."

Elena couldn't help but grin widely when Drystan took the words right out of their mouth. "You'd think," she agreed. "If it wouldn't end up causing more trouble for us, I'd have half a mind to encourage them to do just that. But if Nevermere are holding back their greatest source of power then it could end up being better for us," she stated.

Elena was fully invested in the conversation as she scooted closer to Drystan, draping her legs over top of his knees as she continued to ask questions. "So did you speak to anyone while you were there? Were people not fearful of your red hair? Our infamy has spread after all."
Had it been literally anyone else, Drystan would have pushed their legs off of him or misted his legs away. But Elena was not only one of his few favorites in the family but also one of even fewer who had no compulsions about getting into his space. So his only response was to rest his arm on her legs.
"Well revealing who I was would have given up the game a little early, don't you think?" He teased gently as he dissolved his red hair into mist for a moment before it reformed. "But it seems that, among the general population, we are not nearly as much of a concern to the Nevermerans. Not like Lorendale or Coheed."

Elena grinned as he made his hair turn to mist. She much preferred his red hair to this new look but he had this skill that allowed himself to remain undetected and that was very valuable. She thought for a moment before continuing.
"Have you considered going back to Lorendale?" she asked coyly. "And finding out what information you can there?"
He had certainly considered it, but given the fragility of the country Drystan had not fully entertained the idea until recently that it certainly could be done. That he could leave and things would not entirely fall to shambles, even if there had been events that occurred in his absence that had not been accounted for.
"I suppose a trip could be made. I'm curious as to how far off, or not, my prediction was about how the state of things would deteriorate after we left."
