[ For @torsten ]
The women of Nevermere never ceased to impress Warren. Despite a lack of equality between them and their male counterparts, they always proved to be the tougher sex in his eyes. Recently, he'd had two separate interactions with witches he already had great respect for, and it had given him an idea. The idea had been approved, but this wasn't something he would force on his soldiers. Instead, he'd look for volunteers.
Heavy boots echoed against the stone floors as he exited his office and began toward the courtyard. His new assistant, Jasper Gerard, exited as well, but went into a different direction. He nodded his head to anyone who passed him in the halls, giving a more proper greeting to any of his superiors, and entered the courtyard. A few groups of soldiers and five or six individuals were there doing various exercises. Most had been scheduled for the day, but others were training for their own sake. He knew exactly which were which, and took note of those making the extra effort to better themselves. With the looming war, those who put in the time would be the ones more likely to make it back home.
He stood somewhere in the middle, where he knew they would all be able to hear him, cleared his throat, and barked in a booming voice that would command the attention of every soldier in the courtyard. "Attention, soldiers!" He said, and tucked his hands behind his back as he waited for them all to quieten down and give him their attention. "I'd like to test a new training technique. This training is not required. I need ten soldiers who know how to swim. If you'd like to volunteer, you will have free leave of whatever training you are currently in the middle of, but it will likely be more difficult than what you are doing now. Who will volunteer?"
As he finished, Jasper walked into the courtyard to take his place behind and to the left of Warren. He had parchment and quill in hand, a warm jacket on, and a small woman followed closely behind him. She was also dressed warmly, and carried a heavy bag over her shoulder. Soldiers would recognize her as one of the many military medics.
