[ For @elletta ]
A knock came at Warren's office door, and he attempted to ignore it. In the following seconds the door opened, and a sliver of light fell across his face. He looked up from the couch, leaning his head toward the door with half a scowl but answered with a tone of civility. "Yes, what is it?"
"Sorry to disturb you, Lieutenant Woodwick," one of the many palace assistants said as she poked her head in. "A report came through and it's rather urgent, but we can't locate the soldiers meant to be in the area. We thought it best to come to you."
"Come in," he said, grunting as he pushed himself up on the couch, swinging his feet off and onto the floor, and rubbed his eyes. He held his hand out and as the assistant came in, she handed him a small piece of parchment with a simple note on it. He read it, rolled his eyes, and handed it back to her. "Alright, I'll handle it. Thank you."
She nodded and walked out as he stood up and stretched his back, then re-lit the candle he'd put out only an hour or so ago and picked up a piece of parchment from his desk. Scanning the list of soldiers on duty and those that might be available, he frowned. He put the paper back down and grabbed his jacket from the back of his chair, pulling it on. Then he returned to the couch and put his boots, and lastly tied his sword belt around his hips. Blowing the candle out, he locked the office door behind him and headed out. He stopped by the courtyard first and found it empty, then did the same with the mess hall. The soldiers there seemed to have just gotten off of their patrols, and he wasn't going to drag them back out. His last stop was the barracks.
As he entered, he glanced around. Some soldiers were sleeping, others were lying in their bunks reading quietly, and some others were conversing in hushed whispers. He waved a hand toward those who were awake. "I need a soldier to come with me to a possible disturbance in the city. If you have a shift in the morning, I'll find you a replacement." He spoke loudly enough for those awake to hear him, but attempted to soften his gravely voice as not to wake those already asleep.
