Tale:
Alaric is the illegitimate son of a baron, but few people know that about him. His mother was a maid that worked in his father's manor, and she had taken great pleasure in warming his bed and eventually got pregnant with him. When she told his father about her pregnancy, he denied with heat that it was really his child....she was a slut after all. Who knew who fathered the child? As his mother put it, she blackmailed him so that he would pay her a handsome sum of money as "hush money" so that she wouldn't ruin his reputation--or his marriage--by blabbing about their illicit affair to everyone and their mother. Needless to say, she was not welcome to stay on as a maid in that household.

With the hush money, she was able to settle her and baby Alaric in a boarding house, and she managed to pass him off as her much younger brother that she had to take care of because her parents died of a terrible disease (his mother really should have been a story teller). Eventually, she got a position as a cook in the house of a painter who eventually would make her "brother" Alaric his apprentice when he saw the boy's natural talent.

He grew up to be a very accomplished painter that many members of the nobility want to hire him to either paint their portraits, or to paint something grand that they can show off in their homes.
