[ For Cezar Scorza ]
“Easy does it…”
Tallis made a soft clicking sound as she held her hand out to the mare. In her other hand was a coiled rope that she swung slowly from side to side. The rain was coming, and Tallis needed to get the horse inside. The beast’s sleek black coat glistened in the sun, despite the dirt caked on its lower legs and hooves and the hollowness of its ribs. The horse had been a bargain. One surely destined for death had Tallis not rescued it. Considering the woman carried death in her fingers, the irony was unmistakable.
“That’s it, easy girl…”
The mare’s nostrils flared, its black eyes wide with fear. The horse kicked at the ground with its hooves, and flicked its tail back and forth, but it did not run. Tallis inched ever closer with the rope still swinging in rhythm at her side.
“You’re alright…”
Once she was satisfied the horse was calmed, Tallis tossed the rope in a graceful arc and it slipped around the horses’s neck. It hung loose, the mare not seeming to realize it was even there. Tallis counted it a small victory. Slowly she started to tug, bringing the lasso tighter and tighter until—
There was a change in the wind. Thunder rumbled and the barn door rattled, causing the mare to balk. Tallis, rope now in both hands, tried to hold steady as the horse tossed her head back with a shrieking whinny. The rope started to slip through her hands, burning her palms.
“Easy, girl, easy—”
The horse was flailing, absolutely frantic with fear. Tallis was gripping tightly trying to keep a grasp on the horse even as the rope continued burn. With one last jerk, the horse broke free, sending Tallis to the ground with a thud. The wind left her body and she lay there, croaking as the horse rattled around the enclosure.
Tallis tried to call, but nothing but a croak left her lips. Even if she could make noise, there was no one to come. She knew that. Tallis was seventeen, barely more than a child, and yet found herself completely and utterly alone.
