The peace that formerly reigned in Terra Nova has eroded, now little more than a memory. War ravages the continent. Disputes divide kingdoms; ideals divide families. The quest for power consumes absolutely and indiscriminately. None are immune to its allure.
Who will rise and who will fall? Only time—and ambition—will tell.

5 whole years of Heir Apparent goodness! When I started the site, I knew I was hunkering down for the long haul, but I never could have predicted the numerous twists and turns this roleplay site has seen. Hundreds of plots, characters, and members have come and gone, all leaving marks on the site. I am so very thankful for those who have invested. Because you keep coming back, keep getting on, and keep writing, Heir Apparent has the legacy it does today. Three cheers to us!
This whole situation with Mosse and Shannon had been a very unfortunate event, especially for them. It had been just before the end of the year, so they weren't able to start the new year with a clean slate. No, they were to answer to Aldrich's every command, like Regan had told them. And Aldrich wasn't about to go easy on them. The gala was in a couple of days and the man had contemplated forbidding them to go, but he supposed they'd just naturally understand they weren't allowed to have the night off.
Abbott walked into the messhall and looked around. It didn't take long before he was able to spot them in the crowd. The man walked through the aisles between the tables and tapped @torsten on the shoulder. "Clean up your tray, now, and follow me." If he was still eating, that was just too bad. Aldrich wouldn't allow him to finish the meal. Then he continued down the aisle and tapped Rhedara Shannon on the back, repeating what he had told the young man.
Aldrich returned to the door of the messhall and gestured for them to follow him. They'd be going to a small office to talk.
We won't call it quits. We'll call it the start.

Mosse had his head down, busily eating and totally concentrating on his food. It wasn't great food but there was plenty of it. He'd barely got in two large bites when he felt a tap at the shoulder. He paused mid bite, his spoon still in the air and looked over his shoulder at Abbot's retreating back. Dammit. He dropped the spoon with a heavy thud and it clattered to his tray.
Swiftly he picked up the tray, stood, returned it and did an about face to follow behind the Sergeant. He caught up a little too quickly and he adjusted his stride to match without stepping on anyone's heels. The day of reckoning had arrived and he squared his shoulders, ready to take on the punishment he knew he deserved. A shuttered, stone faced look overcame his features, his eyes held rigidly ahead and fully prepared to endure whatever happened next.

Rhedara had just choked down the last of her meal when Abbott appeared like a bat out of a cave and ordered her to follow him. She only allowed herself a steadying breath, wondering if she should have bothered eating since she anticipated the kind of day that had you losing your lunch. Well what was done was done. it was time to face the consequences of her own actions. She decided to try channeling Tor a little, and tried to keep her face more stoic than she usually would have while on duty. Maybe it would help.
As soon as she had deposited the tray, she turned to follow the two men to wherever Abbott decided to dish out their punishment, trotting a little to catch up.

Once they arrived at the office, Aldrich closed the door behind them and went over to the desk. He sat down in the chair and looked st the young soldiers.
"I've talked to miss Lassiter", he said, starting off the most miserable days of their lives. "You're under my command until I dismiss you. You're going to do whatever I say, whenever I want." He tapped his fingers on the desk.
"Let me be very clear here. If either of you ever pull a move like that again, it will mean the end of your military career. We do not tolerate childish behaviour like that." Aldrich got up again from the chair and started pacing back and forth.
"You are not to enjoy free time. Whenever you're off duty, you report to me to see if I need to have anything done." He stopped pacing and looked at them again. "Is that understood?"

Rhedara stood there and listened to Abbott repeat what Lassiter had already told them. She was not looking forward to the unforeseeable future just now. She tried to look at this week as a lesson on the importance of stomping out the spark of temper. Yeah, sure.
When Abbott was finished speaking, Rhedara had only one thing to say, "Understood, sir."

They both said they understood. Good. Aldrich let his eyes wander over the soldiers before turning his back to them and pacing closer to the window, looking out of it over the military wing. Then he turned around again.
"Mosse, you should be washing out your mouth with soap after the bullshit that you spat out during my training session. For that reason, you'll be cleaning the mess hall today. If I see any spots left after you're done, you're starting over."
He then turned to face Rhedara. "Shannon, you'll be cursing yourself after you're done cleaning every pot and pan there's in the kitchen. They haven't been cleaned in a while and there's some good buildup and residue now."
Aldrich started to move again, walked past them and opened the door of the office. "Let's go." They'd be going back to the mess hall and he would surveil their work.
Tor was lawful good. What had happened was a literal once in a life time incident and it was the first, last and only one in Tor's entire life. He'd never been the rebellious type. There was nothing else to say or answer, so Mosse followed obediently behind Abbot in silence, knowing that he'd earned the punishment and fully accepted it as he should.

Kitchen duty again? Rhedara wanted to groan, to throw herself on the floor and throw a tantrum of epic proportions. She'd had enough of that the other night! Scouring all those pans of the gunk and rust was going to take hours. She supposed she should thank her lucky stars that that was all he was asking for now.
She kept that all in, of course. She had to bite the inside of her lip to do it, but she managed it even if it meant nearly catching the still-healing cut with her teeth. She followed Abbott and Mosse out of the office, bracing herself for the torture ahead.

Once they reached the mess hall, Aldrich sat down on one of the benches and lifted his legs, resting them on a table, which caused his boots to drop some dirt down on the surface. oh well, Mosse would have to deal with that, then. He folded his hands over his stomach and settled in, ready to watch them work their asses off.
"Well then. You know where the mops and everything are kept, so let's get to work."
Mosse walked to the bucket and went to fill it with water. Hefting it with a careful hand and setting it down in the farthest corner, he dunked the mop in it and began his chores.

Rhedara silently went to her own work station, eyeing the pile of pots and pans with a little dread. This was going to be disgusting, and grueling. She reminded herself that she got herself in this situation as she grabbed a pan and began to scrub.

Abbott watched as the two young people started out with their tasks. What followed was just a whole lot of boredom on his end. While they were working, there was little for him to say, except for the occasion "is this going to take all day?".
After an hour or two, he could see that both Mosse and Shannon were done with what he had tasked them to do. With a groan the officer got to his feet and looked around, leaving some dirty footprint behind while he walked. Eventually he turned around to face them. "Good. This was the first task of many. Tomorrow, I'll come find you and I'll give you something else to do. For the remained of the day, you'll go back to your regular duties." He took a few steps towards the big door leading to and away from the messhall. "Mosse, clean up that dirt on the floor. Shannon, put the pots and pans away. After that, you're dismissed for the day." Then he continued and was on his way.
