[ For @adeline ]
Trapped. For at least a couple of weeks now.
That's what Xanthe was. Trapped, and there was no one to blame for it because the person to blame was dead. Dead by Xanthe's own hands. "Remember what Embric and Aine said," Savi told her over and over again. Sometimes it helped. Sometimes it didn't.
The Dresmondi who worked in the estate had claimed Xanthe for their own. Hiram had brought her there, made it clear she was to stay, but never made it clear what she was to do. She'd wandered the place for a while, but once she'd started helping out around the cold castle, it wasn't all that bad. At least it kept her busy.
"I don't want to do it," an older female Dresmondi whispered to another. "I'm too tired. Just let me work in the kitchen today."
"No, you were in the kitchen all day yesterday, and I was dealing with her. It's your turn."
Xanthe stepped up to the two of them. Their whispers were far too loud, and her presence made them immediately stop. They eyed her suspiciously. Many of the servants weren't sure what to think of her. They hadn't really needed another servant, and Xanthe had just showed up late in the night alongside Hiram. It didn't inspire confidence, that was for sure. "I'll do it. Just tell me what it is," Xanthe said flatly, though she was whispering like the women were. They looked between one another and shrugged.
"Here, take this," the older woman said, taking a tray of food off a nearby table and shoving it into Xanthe's hands. "To the Queen Adeline. She's in the dining room, waiting, and it's already late."
Xanthe looked down at the tray, then shrugged. "Alright." Without another word, she moved toward the dining room, careful not to spill anything that was on the heavy tray. As she entered the room, she found a very long table there, and at it sat a single woman. She recognized Adeline from tribute, and walked over to where she sat. "Sorry for the late meal, my queen," Xanthe said quietly, placing the plates and cups from the tray neatly in front of her. "Is there anything else I can get you?"
