The peace that formerly reigned in Terra Nova has eroded, now little more than a memory. War ravages the continent. Disputes divide kingdoms; ideals divide families. The quest for power consumes absolutely and indiscriminately. None are immune to its allure.
Who will rise and who will fall? Only time—and ambition—will tell.

5 whole years of Heir Apparent goodness! When I started the site, I knew I was hunkering down for the long haul, but I never could have predicted the numerous twists and turns this roleplay site has seen. Hundreds of plots, characters, and members have come and gone, all leaving marks on the site. I am so very thankful for those who have invested. Because you keep coming back, keep getting on, and keep writing, Heir Apparent has the legacy it does today. Three cheers to us!
Kat known something was wrong with Fabian, he had left a weird note about leaving or something, and with everything going on, Kat had assumed he just needed to clear her head. Never would she have expected him to take a cowardly dive in order to avoid having a hard conversation. Their marriage wasn't good for Kat, and they had planned to talk about it after all the tournament and ball fanfare had finished. So when she had gotten caught up in all the after drama, she had sent a letter home which had been received by surprised servants since they thought Fabian was with her. But after no word after that they had assumed the pair were just still not quite communicating right and went on with keeping up the place. After a few days, Kat had managed to get out of some duties to get home and take a proper bath in peace. That was when she discovered the note that Fabian had left.
Notifying a soldier seemed like an odd thing to do, and Kat just assumed he would show up eventually when he was done with his pity party. So she left the note where it was and continued on with her day.
And everything was normal for the next few days. Until they weren't.
"Hey Kasper you home?" It was very early in the morning, and Kat had brought all three of her kids from the Winters Estate. She was going to need her brother and siblings more than ever it seemed.

Kasper had been up for a while, no one at the Van Zant house was awake yet so he took stock of what was in the cupboards and other household items. Of course he was stuffing his face with things he deemed almost close to going bad to eat so he'd just do it to reduce waste. He wasn't expecting to hear from Kat so early but he shouted from the kitchen with a mouth full, "Here,"
Bringing the kids in she looked at Dane. "Why don't you bring the twins up to our room yah?" Her son nodded, and started to help the twins up the stairs as Kat made her way to the kitchen. Kasper would have time to see her kids later and be an uncle. He actually would have more than enough time, but right now she needed a drink and her twin.
"So. Soldiers showed up at the estate this morning." She hadn't even bothered to mention the note from Fabian to anyone yet. There were a lot of parts to her marriage she had kept to herself, but she didn't believe that speaking ill of the dead would do any harm now. "Fabian's dead." There were no tears on her face, because she was pissed. She was furious really, to have abandoned her with three children like he had all those years ago in the woods.

When Kat came in without out the kids he immediately knew something was up something about being a twin opened up for some odd connection, Kasper could sense the anger. Swallowing down his mouthful of crackers when she dropped her news almost made him choke, he could tell his sister was being serious, "What?!" his voice dropped lower to a whisper so only they could hear, "what the fuck do you mean he's dead? How? When?"
Kat wasn't really sure what had gone through Fabian's head when he decided to leave his family behind, but now she was going to have to deal with it. Which of course meant that her twin was going to as well, apparently the only man in her life that she could trust was the one's she shared blood with.
"He left this, and they found him in a fucking lake." She passed the letter that Fabian had written over to Kasper, still not sure what to do. This whole thing was a mess, and apparently Mina had been right that she'd be raising her children alone. Something that she wasn't exactly fit for.

Kasper read the letter and it couldn't be any more obvious he was fuming! His hands shook reading it, what a coward! What man by choice removed himself from his kids life, his parents didn't do that they didn't choose to have that mine collapse and leave behind their children! Left a wife and mother to raise their children alone, his heart shattered for Dane in that instance for all the kids and Kat....but his fury was loaded in the angry arches of his eyebrow.
"Kat...I...what the fuck," it wasn't a question as much as a revelation, he wanted to crumble the letter up but he gave it back, "I'll be here for you all Kat, do they know?"
Kat shook her head. "I don't know how to tell them. I'm not good at that shit." She never had been, and it was cruel of Fabian to put her and her children through this. But it's not like she could change the past, so she was just going to have to move forward.
"Can't just say, hey kiddos sorry but dad decided he'd rather die then raise all of you." Because despite it being true, you couldn't say that to children.

Kasper rubbed the bridge of his nose, he agreed with Kat she wasn't good at delivering bad news, "I'll tell them," he'd been the one to tell his siblings about their parents so he could do this, but it still would hurt to tell them because Kasper at least felt like they had a good relationship. Kasper didn't know what had happened and he didn't care what Fabian had done couldn't be fixed and it would echo forever.
"if you want me to, I'd do it for you, you know this. Are you going to keep the letter? If not, burn it don't ever let them see it because kids have a funny way of shouldering some guilt...and that isn't theirs OR yours."
"I should tell them, but I just don't know the right way." She was blunt and to the point, she wasn't mushy or emotional. Not that Kasper was, but he was more than she was. And in this case she wished she was a little more like her twin for once. Well not the first time, she had wishes she was a boy for a long time when she was younger, but she had just become a hardened woman instead.
Shaking her head, Kat took the letter back. "I'm going to hold onto it for a little. You heard about how that Cortell woman killed her husband, want to have this just in case." Better to have a back-up, one that she would definitely hide from her children though. Dane would have enough going on.

Kasper sighed, "Let me tell them, it'll be easier and right now whatever I can carry for you Kat I will," Kasper knew his sister wasn't much of a hugger so he didn't move to comfort her as much as he wanted too, hell he was sure she wasn't mourning Fabian but moreso the void the man was going to leave on their children.
It was for the best Kasper didn't go for a hug as he might have gotten smacked. She was angry, and she wasn't sure who or what to direct that anger at. She couldn't yell and scream at Fabian for leaving his family behind, but she couldn't exactly take it out on her twin either.
"Well we don't usually get what we want, I should be used to that by now ehy?" Her grin was false as hell but she preferred it to the anger boiling to the point of spilling over. "Maybe you should then." She hated that there wasn't that motherly part of her right now. But it just wasn't her, and it wasn't something she could change.

Kasper folded his arms and mumbled, "well it shouldn't be like that," and he shook his head, "but yeah I'll do it. I will tell them in a minute, I got to tell you about something though," he sighed, "At the start of next season I'll be in Coheed for sometime...I know it isn't good news but I don't know when we'll be back and leaving a note...well I'm not going to do that," he paused to see if she was going to hit him for his little bit of dark humor before adding, "are you mad though? At me...for leaving," he shouldn't feel guilty because it was orders by the Commander so he couldn't bail, "I'll spend as much time as I can with the kids, Sas can help, she's pretty reliable. Not as cool as Uncle Kasper...but sometimes fun."
Kat pinched her brow. Of course he had to leave to fucking Coheed. It wasn't his fault, wasn't her fault, and certainly not on her kids. But damn this was going to be a hard time to be a single mother in Nevermere. Sure she could hire help but that wasn't the way she planned on raising her kids. They would be Winters in name only, and in education because that was too good to pass up on. But otherwise, they would scrap right alongside her younger siblings. And that seemed like the best.
"You put too much on Saskia, she's thirteen Kas, the triplets and Enes can pick up the slack, they aren't going anywhere yet and we're all a family." She had gotten all of that responsibility and it sucked. She had made sure that wouldn't be the case while she was gone before and it wouldn't be now.

Kasper sighed, "I know...and you're right I do, sorry," Kasper had pretty much did the same thing to Kat of course he didn't join the service to escape any responsibility but to bring in a steady source of income for them all, still it put a wrench in her future, "All the kids can help, not just Sans. Family meeting time then, but first I'll talk to your kids about Fabian can you gather the rest of the herd in the meantime?"
