The peace that formerly reigned in Terra Nova has eroded, now little more than a memory. War ravages the continent. Disputes divide kingdoms; ideals divide families. The quest for power consumes absolutely and indiscriminately. None are immune to its allure.
Who will rise and who will fall? Only time—and ambition—will tell.

5 whole years of Heir Apparent goodness! When I started the site, I knew I was hunkering down for the long haul, but I never could have predicted the numerous twists and turns this roleplay site has seen. Hundreds of plots, characters, and members have come and gone, all leaving marks on the site. I am so very thankful for those who have invested. Because you keep coming back, keep getting on, and keep writing, Heir Apparent has the legacy it does today. Three cheers to us!
Rhedara had waited a week after she was discharged to come to the docks for work. Not wanting to seem like a sloppy oaf, she'd taken some care in her appearance. Her hair was in a neat braid wrapped around her head like a crown and she wore her nicer set of clothes. She found it ironic that she'd find herself there again...she'd been born near it and had desperately tried to get away, but she'd messed up with the military. Other work in Skia was out. Not enough jobs to go around unless she wanted to sell herself--which she refused to do. So she found herself uncomfortably wedged between a rock and a hard place. With no other options available, she came to the docks with one person in mind: Keelan Morrigan.
Only...she wasn't exactly sure where to find him.
She expected he would be around the docks...he owned a merchant ship so surely he'd be around. She went around the docks asking people if they knew where she could find him and she was pointed in the direction of his ship. She would approach, her fists were clenched at her sides, but she otherwise did not show any of the dread that was in the pit of her belly. She hated ships. She hated the ocean. She had since it had swept her father and brother away.
She'd just have to make herself get over it. Damn it. She needed the money.
When she reached the ship that she thought belonged to Keelan, she looked around for someone that looked like they worked there, "Excuse me," she said to what she thought was a dock worker, "Do you know where I can find Lord Keelan Morrigan?"

The man she found nodded and would direct her to Keelan's ship. Below deck where the shrewd business mans office resided Keelan sat behind his large mahogany desk writing in one of his many log books, he had loads to prepare before it was official that he had the trade for Coheed. There was a knock at the door, "Yeah, what is it?"
"got a misses out here wants to talk to ya' lord Morrigan," the man replied giving Rhedara a pleasant smile, Keelan shut his book, "Bring her in."
Leaning back in his large back chair Keelan watched as the door opened and the woman was lead in, "Mister Healer I need that grain count, now," electric blue eyes said he wouldn't ask again and the man reacted promptly with a yes sir before exiting. Keelan didn't stand and grunted at her to take a seat, "What can I do for you miss?"

She followed the man below deck, hesitating only a moment before boarding the ship. She waited at the door and automatically returned the man’s smile. He seemed a pleasant sort and it made her feel a little better about coming to that place for a job. Just a little though.
As it turned out, Lord Morrigan appeared to either run his ship militarily strict, or the Mister Healer fellow had been procrastinating on his job. Maybe it was both. Perhaps she should have felt sorry that she’d indirectly been the cause of the man being reprimanded, but Rhedara wasn’t at the sort of emotional capacity at that time to care that much. Maybe she’d feel sorry later, maybe she wouldn’t. She was just glad Lord Morrigan hadn’t been giving her that look.
She sat at his grunt, her posture military straight. Lord Morrigan was about what she’d expect from one of the nobility, but there was something…she didn’t know what about him. She thought that perhaps any unease she felt about him was because she was more nervous than she thought she was…then again, instinct was instinct. She just wished she knew what her instincts were trying to tell her.
“Thank you for seeing me, Lord Morrigan,” impulsive hothead she may be, but her mother had taught her how to be polite, “My name is Rhedara Shannon and I’m looking for work. I’ve heard you’re looking for workers.”

"Aye, I am, what do you know about shipping? Boats?" Keelan was rifling through a drawer his bright livewired eyes never left Miss Shannon, "You're a former soldier correct?" Keelan pulled from his drawer a stack of parchment papers, "Let's see," finally the electric stare left Rhedara as he looked through the stack of papers, he had information on Miss Shannon thanks to a close friend within the palace and Nevermere military who always made sure Keelan got first pick of retired or discharged soldiers, "Eighteen. Discharged," when he read that word he looked up at Rhedara then back, "Curses, you Witches sure have been challenged with discipline within those walls hmm? What's that about?"

“I don’t know anything about shipping,” she admitted, “But I know some about boats. My father was a fisherman and he used to take me out on it to help out once in a while,” she bit the inside of her lip. He probably would not want to hire someone who knew as little as she did, but she’d just have to try to get a nice grip on whatever job he was hiring for, “I’m a fast learner. What I don’t know I’ll learn fast,” Raff had told her she was ‘damn smart,’ and she’d believe that with every tiny ounce of herself while she was talking to Lord Morrigan.
Apparently, Lord Morrigan had done his research on her even though she’d not warned him of her coming. Who in the name of the goddess was this man? She could have done without him hearing about why she’d been discharged, but she supposed that was common knowledge now. She could only hope she didn’t screw herself over because of it.
“Ah you heard about that,” she paused, thinking of her answer carefully. She had to word it in a way that didn’t make her seem like an out of control monster, “My drill instructor was having men twice my size sit on the backs of myself and two other women. I objected to being crushed like a bug so he could get his jollies from our pain,” she took a deep breath, “So I cursed him to walk and cluck like a chicken,” there. Stuck to the bare minimum. She had a whole lot more to say about the matter, but she wasn’t about to share that with him without being pushed.

Keelan grunted, a common response Rhedara would come to possibly find out, but he did respond, "You'll survive if you listen, that's my little nugget of advice for you Miss Shannon," returning his information on her back to the drawer he would exchange that with a coin purse which he tapped idly on the desk top as he stared once again at her, his blue eyes were fierce and most people said it looked like Keelan was staring through a person when he looked at them, "I can start you in as a deckhand but you will also be my shadow for the most part, you'll attend meetings with me. You'll take notes and when I'm not in need of you, you'll report to my second for duty on the ship," he offered the heavy sack of coins to her, "This is two weeks of pay in advanced, and you'll have a uniform ready tomorrow when you report to me. I'm not a bully so you won't have a reason to curse me, but you will respect my chain of command while you work for me. This is a good job, one of the best you will get I promise, given your discharge record, so show up and show your worth you'll go far," he wasn't finished so he sat back in his chair, "Do you got a husband? Children? Anything that would prevent you from traveling?"

She nodded. She could listen. She did that a lot in the military. She watched him put the papers in a drawer and eyed the coin purse, then met his eyes. Goddess he was unsettling! It was like he was opening her up like a book to read. Her hands tightened on her lap. Was this a mistake? It didn’t matter. She needed the money. But Terra Nova, she wanted to get up and shake herself off like a wet dog, or run outside and scream out the anxiety. Would she find him more...normal as she got used to him? Maybe, maybe not. He was difficult to read, so working with him had the potential of being more interesting than what she'd been doing with the military.
A deckhand. She could do that. She didn’t know everything that that entailed, but she could do it. it seemed like he had two jobs in mind for her. So no ordinary deckhand...unless they'd all take turns?
“So by 'shadow' you mean that I’ll also be something like your secretary?” She thanked her lucky stars that her noble born mother had taught her to read and write. She’d expected to have work mostly when the ship needed to sail, so limited payment. That he wanted her to do work for him outside of the ship told her that she’d be receiving a steady income. A nice income judging by the size of the bag. She could have cried at the sight of the money, and she was no crier. But now she wouldn’t be on the streets to starve.
She reached out and did not hesitate to take the sack of coins, “Thank you, my lord,” he hadn’t blinked an eye about her cursing her superior. Did he agree with her action? He was a Morrigan...maybe they thought differently about those sorts of things? It didn’t matter. He was giving her a chance despite her bad reputation, “No, you don’t seem like the type that would need to bully anyone,” he was the type of person who had an air about him that demanded respect and respect he would get, “I won’t disappoint you,” she promised.
“No my lord, I’m not married and I don’t have children. I don’t have any family left either,” she hesitated and thought of Raff. They weren’t engaged or married, so she probably didn’t need to mention him, but she decided on being transparent with her new employer, “I am…seeing someone, but I don’t believe he would try and keep me from doing what I need to do.”

"Yes that's exactly what I mean, a secretary but you won't be worked like a mule, if you can gain knowledge from this experience I'd say you would be more of a understudy," Keelan replied as he finally stood and made for his liquor cabinet, "Be courteous and let your man friend know that soon you'll be departing with me and the crew to Coheed," he poured them both a drink before returning his desk sitting hers down in front of her, "We are will be handling shipping of materials to Coheed for the expansion of Nevermere's new city. Once that's established I plan on expanding my business there as well, in time I know I will be needed there more to get everything up and running, if you are capable by then Miss Shannon I'll potentially need a face and mind to keep things here in Nevermere organized. Do you think that's something you can handle?"

She gaped at him, “Me?” She blurted. This was too good to be true, “That is…why me?” She held her hands up, “Not that I’m saying ‘no” I’m flattered that you believe I could do it…and I’ll do it…I can do it,” and she would. She was nothing if not tenacious when she really wanted something, “But that seems like a really important task,” she put her hands back on her lap, “I guess I’m just curious why you think I could be trusted doing that with my background,” she was the daughter of a common fishmonger and a disowned noble—it occurred to her that he might already know her entire background—and was also dishonorably discharged from the military. People like her didn’t get opportunities like this very often if at all.
She looked at the drink he’d set in front of her. She wasn’t much of one for anything harder than ale, but the canister he’d poured it from looked very grand. It was probably nicer booze than she’d ever had before. She would wait for him to sip from his own cup, unsure what decorum called for in times like these. Once she drank, she’d cough at the burn of the alcohol after it slid down her throat. Her pallet wasn’t refined enough to have an opinion on the taste, but it was smoother than anything she’d had before.

"Because you are young, you can be managed and taught, which is something that surprises me about your release from the military that they can't handle a Witch," he could have smiled at her reaction to the drink, he was very sure she had never tasted such a finer whiskey, but he remained as stoned face as the moment she met him, "Plus...fuck that other guy, we have a term for men who act so hard to prove meaningless points, small dicks, he sounds like a small dick guy. Your actions tell me that you stand up for wrongs and you won't take any shit, even in the face of I'm assuming a superior? A noble probably? It doesn't hurt to have someone under my wing that'll smack me in mouth of the think I'm out of line," Keelan didn't have to think about his response in the slightest, he knew most of the time about people before people know of him and he had already seen Rhedara for who she was....
"Most of my men, they fear me, I'm not easy on them because I have high expectations of them. I need someone whose a realist, do you understand? But don't let that get your head all bigger than your curses Miss Shannon," taking another sip and he sat his drink down, "anyways, you are young still Miss Shannon, by your own admission you can do the job, means you aren't stupid and willing to learn. That's why I'm offering you the position and job."

“So you’re saying you can shape me however you want and the military is more incompetent than they let on because they failed to come to that same conclusion?” Maybe she should have kept that to herself, but it was out of her mouth before she had thought the words over. She nodded, “Fair enough.”
His colorful description of Abbott made her mouth turn up into a small smile that only got bigger as the description went on. It was past time that someone agreed with her about that! His usage of profanity threw her only because she’d not heard a noble swear like that before. Swearing itself did not bother her, her father was a fishmonger and her lover had a colorful vocabulary in his own right.
His description of her own actions soothed a wound that had been festering since she’d cursed Abbott. Most people had condemned the loss of control, but Lord Morrigan made it sound like she’d done exactly what she should have done…that she wasn’t someone who would just follow stupid or out of line orders. But that Lord Morrigan thought that she’d be someone to “slap him in the mouth” when he was out of line was…unexpected. Should she believe him? Nobles said a lot of things. She’d just have to wait and see. She ‘d be lying though if the idea of being taken under a noble’s wing didn’t appeal to her to a high degree. She’d hated and envied the nobles with equal measure her whole life.
“Abbott was both my superior and a noble,” she said even as she thought that she hadn’t made a habit of cursing her superiors…although she had cursed a noble before. She wondered if Lord Morrigan had that little secret of hers in that file in his desk, “so you’re not wrong about that,” she bit her lip, eyeing her glass of whiskey. It seemed rude to not take another drink, but her eyes were still watering from that first sip. She put her eyes back on Lord Morrigan, “I accept,” she said as if the two bags of coins sitting in her lap hadn’t been affirmation enough.

She accepted and Keelan couldn't be more pleased as a ghost of a smirk etched out from the corners of his mouth, "Excellent Miss Shannon," he poured her another drink and topped his own off raising it for a toast, "To your new job," if she did or didn't toast with Keelan he would down his small glass of liquor and sit the glass down, "You'll start tomorrow, I want you to meet me here as early as possible. Dress professionally we have a meeting with a small noble fishing family," Keelan returned to the drawer that contained the informed had on Miss Shannon and withdrew from it another leather bound book to which he sat down in front of Rhedara, "Study up on this, the family is sinking and I need their ships."

He looked very pleased and for some reason it made Rhedara uneasy. Why was he so pleased? Was this a position that he’d been struggling to fill, or was it something else? She didn’t think it would be that hard to find a deckhand, but she’d also be filling the role of secretary…a lot of commoners could not read, but she wasn’t the only one that could. Again, she wondered if she had made a mistake coming to Lord Morrigan for a job but…there really was nothing else. Because of that, she chose to shove her uneasy feelings into a box labeled ‘nervous about new job’ and plastered a smile on her face and tried not to look like she was panicking.
Another glass was poured. She stared at it a second, wondering if it would be incredibly rude to not drink it. Her mother hadn’t taught her what to do when a noble, and a new employer at that, poured her alcohol so she had to play it by ear. Reaching out, she took the glass, unwilling to let what she was sure was an expensive brew go to waste, “To new beginnings,” she said before bracing herself and swallowing. It was a little better than the first time around, but she still coughed, eyes watering. If this was going to be a regular thing, she thought she ought to build up her tolerance.
She took the book from him and tried not to grimace. She’d be busy tonight. Hopefully there wouldn’t be any big, difficult words to decipher. She was literate, but most of her reading was restricted to spell books as novels were not something she’d been able to indulge in. Opening the book, she gave the contents a tentative glance. Okay, not so bad…maybe.
Shutting the book, she put her dark eyes back on her new employer, “Will do, my lord. I’ll be here bright and early,” a pause, “Is there anything else you require of me today?”

Keelan shook his head, "No Miss Shannon I don't have anything else for you," he just gestured toward the dossier, "Just study. Don't curse anyone, if you can help it," he joked darkly, "Good day."
He nodded to the door indicating he was truly finished, she could go and close the door behind her. Truthfully Keelan Morrigan was a wildcard, he kept his hand super close and with moves like this most folks often questioned him. They said he'd fail. But here he was.
