Miriel was in the middle of the washing when she felt the first contraction. She'd had a false labor a few days prior so she thought very little of it, continuing her chore. Of course when they continued, she decided it was time to go home, asking her sister to fetch her mother and another to inform Izen Cyrilson . Thank goodness women did chores together, as she was helped back by another woman at the river who was beaming at Miriel. It was always a good thing to add another strong warrior to Coheed, and she had already bore a son once, she was hopeful to prove herself useful again.
Slowly making her way home, making sure not to grip Kell's hand too tightly as the contractions came and went, she was glad to see her mother already there setting everything up. She had certainly not been kind to Miriel, but on days like this it was different. She was fulfilling her duty in the way that Cora saw fit. And she would only encourage such wifely behavior to continue. All Miriel could think was that it was a good thing she hadn't been training or she still would have received an onslaught of abuse.
But overbearing mother or not, Miriel was glad for the support. Childbirth had been a difficult and painful process, but she was glad to bear the pain. She always would be, and she just hoped that her husband would see that. Maybe someday. But for now she had a job to do, and it was one that she could do without disappointing anyone. Except maybe herself.
As the afternoon progressed, so did her labor, and soon her mother was telling her to push as her sisters held her hands. Smiling and crying through the pain, Miriel just wanted it all to be done. Then she would know if she had a son or a daughter, and she could present them to Izen. As she pushed she kept praying for another son, again and again. She'd love them either way, but goodness it would be easier.
Just a few more pushes, come on Miriel.
And so Miriel did just that, pushing out her child with one last gasping breath. Gripping her sisters hands she waited to hear the cries and her mother's announcement. The cry came, and Miriel breathed out a sigh of relief, letting her sisters fuss over her. And then her mother brought over her little bundle of joy, so she committed to love them no matter what.
