[ For @citra ]
It'd been a few days since she had become handmaiden to Queen Adeline. She was given food and water, more than she could stand to eat, and a room of her own that was somehow both larger and nicer and yet more oppressive and suffocating than any dwelling wagon or hut in Elderkeep. Still, it was better than sleeping on the floor, in piles of rags or uncomfortable cots like many of the servants seemed to do. It was better than wandering the halls aimlessly, wondering what preying Eldouir might be around the corner. It was better than the sound of Embric's labored breathing, reminding her that she could stand anything as long as she knew she hadn't been the cause of his death.
Ermir would haunt her, but he hadn't raised her. She had chosen the man who had.
After weeks in the estate, walking through Elderkeep felt like returning home. All around her people were suffering as they always did, but talking, crying, screaming, begging, but at least it was familiar. Nothing in the estate felt familiar. Until today. Today she would be able to bring her tools back. She didn't have a lot of time, but maybe, she hoped, Kasni would be there and she could tell Embric that Xanthe was okay.
As she approached her hut, Savi paused in place and a low growl erupted from his lips. "Someone is there," he informed Xanthe, and she furrowed her brows. The door hung just slightly open.
It's probably Kasni, Savi. We don't have time--
"I know Kasni's scent. It's not her. Or Embric. It's someone else."
Maybe it's one of Ermir's children. We never met them, you wouldn't be familiar with their scent. Let's just...proceed with caution. She wasn't even sure if it was a good idea herself. Whoever was inside could be dangerous, and she had no weapon. Her bow was inside. Hopefully.
"Alright. I'll go first." Savi said, and stepped forward. Though his head was tall enough to come up to Xanthe's hips, he was still an animal and not at the eye-level of humans. Naturally quieter, he crouched down somewhat and pushed his head through the crack in the door.
