The peace that formerly reigned in Terra Nova has eroded, now little more than a memory. War ravages the continent. Disputes divide kingdoms; ideals divide families. The quest for power consumes absolutely and indiscriminately. None are immune to its allure.
Who will rise and who will fall? Only time—and ambition—will tell.

5 whole years of Heir Apparent goodness! When I started the site, I knew I was hunkering down for the long haul, but I never could have predicted the numerous twists and turns this roleplay site has seen. Hundreds of plots, characters, and members have come and gone, all leaving marks on the site. I am so very thankful for those who have invested. Because you keep coming back, keep getting on, and keep writing, Heir Apparent has the legacy it does today. Three cheers to us!
He looked at her a minute longer and his gaze drifted down to the table. It didn't really matter if she knew he was a bastard or not. He didn't have any pretentions and they both knew that you play the hand you're dealt and move on. Not like he knew the guy's name or anything. And it was already obvious that he'd been taking care of his siblings for a while now. He shrugged a shoulder and gave Red a brief summary,
"Yea they're my halfs. My Ma said she had a 'great love' with a noble but his dad wouldn't let him marry a commoner. Ma got knocked up with me and ended up marrying Greglin a season later. They fought over it a lot and Ma finally decided ta give me her last name so I'd have something ta go by. She died givin birth ta Ewan twelve years ago."

He was quiet at her question and she wondered if she’d asked a rude question anyways. But then he answered her question and even answered the one she didn’t ask out loud. He’d been so tight-lipped about something that personal, she’d half expected to get a terse, one-worded answer.
What did you say to a story like that? Reminded her a little of her parent’s story, except her mother married the man she loved. Gave up everything and eloped the day they were both old enough to marry, “I’m sorry…that she died that is,” if she were standing, she would have shifted her weight, “It’s…not easy losing a parent," a pause, "What kind of people were they?"
His comment about how pretty her mom must have been made her snort in a way that would have had her mother raising her eyebrows at her for how unattractive it was. She habitually clapped her hands over her nose and mouth as if that would have hidden the noise that had already left her.
“Well, my dad thought so,” she didn’t say the words in a self-depreciating way. She knew she was attractive, and if she looked like her mom, then that meant her mom was attractive. Rhedara had thought so, too. But for some reason, she’d not expected him to indirectly complement her appearance that way.
In an eloquent explanation, Raff shrugged a shoulder at both her sorry and her question. What was there to say? I dunno, he beat my ass and she's dead so it sucked. Yea no that wasn't something that needed more explanation and the shrug at least acknowledged the obligatory sorry that people forced themselves to say in reaction to death.
When he'd tried to lighten the mood, he at least got a weird little pig snort from Red. He gave a wry smile and watched her cover her mouth with her eyes wide. Yea, her face was VERY expressive and maybe in time, she'd grow a stone face working for Keelan. He hoped not. The words that had needed saying were pretty much done and the sand in the hourglass stopped for no one. He had to start his night shift and Raff knew damn well that Bulger had lingered around Red on purpose, a silent reminder that Raff had better watch his mouth coz they all took turns making sure no one got too big of a mouth-on or off Keelan's clock.
His blue eyes darkened when he looked out the window that showed full nightfall now and he sighed.
'I can't stay much longer Red. I gotta get ta work." Raff said and tapped his mouth, "Kiss fer good luck?"

Raff didn’t seem to want to say much about his parents. She thought about pushing, but she didn’t much like to talk about her parents either…not that there was a lot to talk about. The most interesting thing about them was the circumstances of their marriage, and the way they both died. There’d be other times to share.
He looked out the window, and she turned her head to look, too. It was dark. He’d probably have to leave for that mysterious job he did for Keelan soon. She’d hoped he would be able to stay longer—either to talk or…not talk—but she understood needing to do what needed to be done for extra money. She understood, but it didn’t mean she liked it.
His request had her smiling, and she bit her lip, not trying to hide it, but just out of habit, “I thought that wasn’t allowed when you’re wearing that?” she said playfully, kissing him anyways. If he was standing, she’d get up on her tippy toes to reach him, resting her hands on his arms. If he was sitting, she’d lean in from her own seat to kiss him. She would want to get in his lap, but reminded herself that he needed to go. Keelan was not a man she’d want to be late for, and she wasn’t about to get Raff in trouble with the noble. Not for a kiss. But if he tried to deepen it, she wouldn’t fight him too hard.
When she stood on her tip toes to kiss him, it took all his self control not to just pick her up, throw her on the table and just bang her til they were both sated into unconsciousness. Had it really been two hours already? Raff kissed her quickly and let her hands linger on his arms.
"A kiss goodbye ain't against anyone's rules Red." Raff smiled at her, finishing the rest in his head. Because any night could be his last. Every good bye could be the final one if he didn't stay alert. Working for Keelan wasn't about sitting in nice places and his very few public appearance with his boss was for intimidation or darker... purposes. But he was glad that Red got the nicer side of the business with sit downs and being a pretty face with a secret big brain because it kept her relatively safer. Well, as safe as one could get working for a guy like that.
"I got go Red..." Raff admittedly reluctantly, loath to step away from the woman. But he did.

The kiss was quick and not nearly enough. She wanted to go back in for another one, but didn’t. He didn’t immediately step back from her though, and she would let her hands rest on his arms as long as she could.
“Well I’m glad,” she said to being able to at least give him a kiss goodbye. That would have been a huge disappointment if she couldn’t do anything beyond a possible casual touch when he was wearing that suit. One of the benefits to being with someone romantically was affectionate touches and kisses, and she’d not wanted to completely hold back on the impulse to do both those things with a change of clothes.
She still wasn’t entirely clear on what Raff did for Lord Morrigan. From what he said, it was more hazardous than he’d initially told her. The work was also done at night which told her that his activities were likely very secret—again something that she could put together by not being able to talk about the details of either of their jobs or to even casually mention Keelan’s name. Would she ever find out exactly what he did, or would she always be in the dark?
All too soon, he stepped away from her, and she’d let her hands drop even as she wanted to clutch him closer, “I know,” she tried to keep the disappointment out of her voice.
Once he started heading to her front door, she would follow after him, “I’ll see you soon, right?”
