The peace that formerly reigned in Terra Nova has eroded, now little more than a memory. War ravages the continent. Disputes divide kingdoms; ideals divide families. The quest for power consumes absolutely and indiscriminately. None are immune to its allure.
Who will rise and who will fall? Only time—and ambition—will tell.

Change in how times flows. Was 4 IC seasons, now only 2 IC seasons per 1 OOC year.
Our dearest and lovely admin welcomed her new baby boy, Jet, on Sept 7th! We're so happy for her and her family! Congratulations Mama!! Your boys are all so lucky to have such an incredible mom to love them! God bless!
Alden absolutely loved his big sister. Did she return that love? Yes! She was a great older sister, a shining example of what he could accomplish if he put his mind to it. At least that's what he'd convinced himself to think about the whole situation. It was easy enough when the idea of your sister hating you was the other option. Nom Alinore just had her own unique was of showing her love, and she was a special kind of person so it made sense. Add to that the pressure of being a high-society lady in Nevermere? It was no wonder she was a little cold on the outside.
So rather than tell his dear sister he would be popping by, he figured it would be a fun surprise. It was fun training in the palace as a guard, you really got to know the place. And could walk around a little more, surprise your big sister without her having to be notified of your arrival. It was super fun, and of course Alinore was going to love it.
Nodding his head to those in the hallway he marched through and made his way to Alinore's door. Knocking and announcing himself. "Lady Thornhill, let you're little brother in or face the peril of having a boring afternoon!"
Alinore had just wrapped up a meeting with a particularly irritating nobleman and sat down to deal with the papers on her desk when the knock and familiar voice broke the peaceful silence of her office. A moment passed, in which she closed her eyes and rubbed her temples, her elbows resting on the wooden desk in an unladylike manner that only made an appearance in solitude. Perhaps if she stayed quiet Alden would simply go away.
She had enough of a headache already brewing without letting another one into her office.
Alas, he was not so easily deterred, so she admitted defeat and rose from her seat. Opening the door, she welcomed her younger brother in with a smile. “Alden, what a surprise.” Alinore stepped aside to let him in, then closed the door behind him - though not before ordering some tea, of the particular blend that helped to soothe life-induced headaches. She drank it often. “I would have expected you to be busy at this time of day. Are they not working you hard enough?”
His dear big sister was absolutely correct. He could have stuck around and waited, rapped out a nice rhythm on the door until she went a little nuts, there were really so many options. Being a little brother was fun, but especially when Alinore was this important figure. When to Alden she was just the sister who was bigger than him until he was out of his teens.
Smiling right back, although entirely genuine, Alden waltzed in. "Well that was the point dear sister." Surprises were fun, and hard to pull off when she had been in Arynn Frey for ages. That had been the worst, so far away and only able to communicate through letters. Although he got plenty of back and forth there, exciting.
"Training has been great. Some biscuits with that tea too yes love?" Smiling he plopped himself into a chair. They were family it's not like he needed to be told it was acceptable. "I've got evening duty tonight, hence the get-up." Smiling he let his eyes rove the office before focusing back on Alinore.
Indeed it was. How unfortunate. She would have arranged to be out of the castle had she known he harbored intentions of dropping by unannounced.
Dispassionately, now that his back was turned, she watched him flounce into her office as if he owned the space and sprawl across a chair, but by the time his age found hers, a more palatable expression had replaced it. “Biscuits, too,” She confirmed, having relayed the amendment to the servant. With far more elegance, if she did say so herself, Alinore crossed the familiar space and took the seat across from him, leaning back in the chair with her legs crossed daintily at the ankles.
“I’m pleased to hear your training is going well. Are you involved in these new assessments as well?” Just as word of the ball had spread, so too had word of the military’s corrective actions. She eyed his outfit for a moment before nodding. “I see.” Evening was, unfortunately, many hours away. “I seem to recall you enjoy this particular shift. I assume you’re looking forward to today’s?”
Clapping his hands together at the idea of biscuits and tea, Alden settled in. What was his sisters was basically his right? So this office was kind of his, except he would have chosen much more comfortable chairs. They were impossible to take a nap in, and that just wouldn't do in his office.
"Somewhat." Shrugging his shoulders, he hadn't needed to prove himself too much as he had just proved himself enough to get a promotion. But he had still gone through a lot of the drills and fights. "Passed with flying colors as is expected of the Thornhills." It would have been kind of funny to fail once to see what his father did, but Alden was pretty sure the guy would have just assured him things were fine. He was not the same commanding Thornhill he'd once been. And the youngest took advantage of that at every turn.
Smiling at his dear sister he nodded. "Well of course, I'd say something about seeing the beautiful sunset but the clouds get in the way of that." It was always the laid back shift, although he wasn't sure that would be the case at the palace. He got the sense things were a lot more strict.
At twenty three, Alden was far closer to childhood than Alinore, but that hardly meant that he had to act the part. By the time she was his age, she had already established herself as a respectable and formidable member of court beyond the importance granted to her by their family name – and here he sat, clapping with delight like a boy without a care in the world. In a way, he was. Alinore had certainly pulled in enough strings to help him into his position as royal guard that she considered his promotion a result of her own merit as much as his.
With a pleasant expression frozen on her face, she listened to her brother’s reassurance that he lived up to the high standards set by their name. “Of course,” She responded lightly, inclining her head slightly. “Father would expect no less.” With Alden, Father would see no less either. Such was the injustice of womanhood in Nevermere.
His quip about the sunset had her lips twitching upward, though whether the display of amusement was genuine or not would be up for him to decide. “I’m afraid they do,” She agreed, taking another sip of her tea. “I seem to recall you were especially intrigued by the sunrises and sunsets when I first arrived in Arynn Frey. Do you still have that little painting I sent you?” It had been a relatively easy gift to acquire and send to him in one of their letters: the reds and golds of an ocean sunset painted on a piece of parchment with enchanted ink that brought the entire scene to life.
Alden was pretty sure that he could announce to his father he was quitting court to become a bard and the old man would twist it into a positive. As long as he wasn't bed-ridden, Alden could do no wrong, and that was fantastic. Wasn't his fault that he was a guy and Alinore got stuck being a woman. "He's throwing a dinner for the honor next week, I assume you'll be there to celebrate sister." She was his sister after all, and must have been quite proud of him for doing so well.
Taking a bite of his biscuit, the mention of the gift had him nodding his head enthusiastically. As if he would ever get rid of a gift from his sister! That would be insanity! "It greets me every morning in my room! I could never throw such a thoughtful gift away." Smiling, Alden was so lucky to have a thoughtful sister who got him such a cool gift.
"Do you have to go back soon?" Through a mouthful of crumbs, he spit out the words.
“Come now, Alden.” Alinore gave him the long-suffering look that every older sister mastered by the time she began her mandatory training. “Do you truly believe that I would miss such an event unless it were absolutely necessary? Of course I will attend next week’s dinner.“ After all, the proper images had to be maintained. “Has Father shared with you who he has invited?”
A knock at the door signaled the servant’s return with their refreshments, and soon enough, Alinore and Alden found themselves with a pot of tea and an array of biscuits before them. The former elegantly poured herself a cup of tea while the latter chewed on his biscuit like an animal. Years of experience aided her in concealing her disdain behind a pleasant smile as her brother enthused about the little painting. “I’m pleased to hear that you have kept it after all these years. Perhaps one day you will accompany His Majesty to another kingdom and be able to see such a sight with your own eyes.”
Doing so would get him out of her hair as well, for it certainly seemed as though he would be there for the foreseeable future. “King Cassian has decided that I would better serve him closer to home for the time being, so I’m afraid that you’re stuck with me until he changes his mind.” Or, more accurately, she would be stuck with him. During her time in Arynn Frey, Alinore had missed Nevermere greatly, and in doing so, she had forgotten the experience that was interacting regularly with Alden Thornhill.
In this, absence was the only way the heart grew fond.
Alden waved his hand, really not caring about who was invited. "As long as your there sister, I really haven't a clue who father has deemed worthy. Surely at least one or two potential suitors for the both of us." Rolling his eyes, he was far too young for it, but his father probably just wanted to see a grandchild before he croaked.
Nodding his head and munching away, he was really quite glad to travel one day. But that was probably no surprise to Alinore given the fact that he had constantly asked to visit when she was in Arynn Frey. Alas, it wasn't to be, but someday he'd end up in all the kingdoms like Benny D. "I hope so. It'll be great to see all these places and not in the midst of battle." That was for peasants.
"Amazing dear sister. I'll have to swing by more often then!" Alden smiled, sure that they would only become closer over the next few seasons. Reunited and it felt so good.
More often than not, Alinore suspected that their father had invested all of his energy toward raising a proper heir in her, and when Alden was born, the relief of having a son to carry on the family name had overwhelmed any intentions to hold him to the same standard. Or perhaps her brother was simply less capable. Both explanations were equally likely.
“Undoubtedly,” She agreed, the corners of her lips twitching upward. “However, if you could inquire after the guest list for me, I would greatly appreciate it, Alden.” Honestly, to show not a single ounce of interest or concern for who they might have to entertain - well, the long-suffering insult to injury was nothing new, at least.
As he spoke of visiting the other kingdoms, Alinore sipped at her tea with every social nicety that her brother lacked while he ate his biscuits like a barbarian. “Indeed. When you travel, I should hope that every kingdom you visit will live up to your expectations.” It wouldn’t be that hard.
Of course, she did not find his enthusiasm at the prospect of her remaining in Nevermere particularly surprising. She weathered his excitement with a smile and cautioned, “Only as long as you do not neglect your own duties.” Which would hopefully only become more numerous as he settled into his new role. Another bracing sip of tea before stepping further into the role of caring big sister. “Now, may I ask how you’re spending your time these days, Alden? When you’re not working, of course, seldom though that may be.”
Sighing, Alden nodded his head, father did favor him after all so it would be easy enough to get a guest list. He already knew what he'd say, talk about wanting to know about any potential suitors for himself and dear Alinore. After all she needed all the help she could get, at least that's how father would want it phrased. Really Alden didn't care if she married or not as long as she was happy with the result. Her entering an unhappy marriage would be a nightmare, but on the flip side a happy marriage could only bode well. Alas it wasn't his choice, for the best for his big sister of course. "For you, consider it done."
One of the great things about Alden was he was far more easily impressed and entertained then his sister. He would probably even find something to do in the library of books you apparently couldn't read. "They will, after all, adventure is out there you just have to have the means and mind to find it. And luckily I have both." Wealth got you places, and Alden thanked his lucky stars to be born noble every day. And male, that would have sucked to be stuck as what was often viewed as the weaker sex.
"Neglect my duties? You wound me Ali." Smiling with a crinkle in his nose at using a nickname from when he was a toddler, there was nothing better than spending quality time with family. Work was important but this? Familial duty was important, or whatever his father so often tried to instill in him. "I've been swimming still, calmer waters now luckily. Better than the tutoring court lessons on politics and strategy." Rolling his eyes, he knew it was for his benefit but talking about made-up strategies and battles of the past was boring.
