The peace that formerly reigned in Terra Nova has eroded, now little more than a memory. War ravages the continent. Disputes divide kingdoms; ideals divide families. The quest for power consumes absolutely and indiscriminately. None are immune to its allure.
Who will rise and who will fall? Only time—and ambition—will tell.

5 whole years of Heir Apparent goodness! When I started the site, I knew I was hunkering down for the long haul, but I never could have predicted the numerous twists and turns this roleplay site has seen. Hundreds of plots, characters, and members have come and gone, all leaving marks on the site. I am so very thankful for those who have invested. Because you keep coming back, keep getting on, and keep writing, Heir Apparent has the legacy it does today. Three cheers to us!
[ For @calanthe , immediately following the meeting with Augustus Rainecourt ]
Keion had stepped in his office and immediately sent word for Calanthe to meet him in his office, along with a signet ring so that she could see herself into the estate. It had been a bit of time since he spoke with his niece and there were quite a few things that he wanted to speak with her with, beyond what enchantments Augustus had asked of them.
Sitting himself at his desk, he busied himself with tidying up the disaster of papers that always seemed to litter his desk. Things were finally in motion again for the family, and it brought a small smile to his face.
Calanthe was in the library working on research for her project with the prince when Keion's messenger arrived. Smiling at the ring she rolled it between her fingers for a moment before slipping it on her finger. Gathering her research she exited the library and entered the Blackwood estate.
Making his way to Keion's office, she had her pile of books, flagging down one of the slaves and having them bring it to the workshop downstairs. She had work to do with her other uncle later anyways and it would save her the hastle. Of course it probably would have been good to carry them to get the weight training, but it was too late now as she made her way to his door and knocked.
"Come in, Calanthe," Keion called at the knock on his door, standing to greet her. "What can I get you to drink?" he'd ask and then send for whatever it is she wanted, plus a whiskey for himself. Coming around his desk, he'd wave at the two chairs in the corner of his office, indicating Calanthe should take a seat in one of them.
Once the drinks arrived, he'd carry them over and seat himself in the other one before handing Calanthe's beverage to her. "Now, have have you been? I've heard you've been working with our very own Prince on some projects." He settled back into his chair, crossing one ankle over a knee.
While Calanthe had changed much in her fathers absence, she still was quick to rush in and give her uncle a hug. He was almost never around these days and the occasional gift and hello was never enough. She might be taking on the responsibilities of one older than twenty-two but that didn’t mean she had changed completely. And while with her aunt she felt the need to be the brave and strong woman she wanted to be, Uncle Keion had always been a safe space for her.
”A green tea please.” While she could drink she never much found the need to. It softened your reflexes and numbed the mind, thus it had always seemed a bit silly to her. She understood that many built a tolerance to the stuff but that seemed to be pointless.
Moving to sit she blew on her tea and smiled at her uncle. ”He thinks I have potential. We’ll just have to see, Prince Akagi even thinks a position would be in order when he sits on the throne.” Taking a delicate sip she couldn’t help but be proud of her circumstances, and tried not to focus on the twinge of her father missing her shining moments.
Keion nodded, sipping at the whiskey that had been brought along side Calanthe's tea. "So he told me," Keion murmured, amusement and a bit of pride shining in his eyes. "I also spoke with him about moving into a Cabinet position. It would be wonderful to have not one, but two Blackwoods on the Arynn Frey Cabinet." Which meant that the Prince, and Arynn Frey, would have double the Blackwood influence. He smiled again at the thought.
Turning his focus back to Calanthe, he added, "Of course, as your uncle I did have to warn the Prince that your studies would continue to come first. Speaking of that, how are those going? Are you and Evander working on anything in particular?"
Calanthe nodded her head, a smile on her face. "The more the merrier, we are the brightest family to bring into such positions." Maybe she hadn't quite earned that name yet, but it would come. This would only help, and she had been the youngest to do many things in her family. This would just be another thing to add.
"All things for the betterment of Arynn Frey." She had just finished her cage, but for now she was keeping that to herself, well and Uncle E, but considering it was his workspace it only made sense. She would share eventually, once it had been used for it's purposes of course. "And I've been teaching a Dresmondi sign language, best to have their trust I assume?"
As the conversation drew on with Calanthe, Keion was reminded of what Minister Bowen had said about the younger generation being better than the previous.
He nodded again, "Yes, of course. The refugees are now part of our kingdom, for all intents and purposes. Just as we want Arynnites to trust our family, so should the Dresmondi."
Sipping at his drink, he finally broached the real reason he had called Calanthe here, "Speaking of the betterment of Arynn Frey... I was called to a meeting with someone of high rank in Lorendale, who spoke to me about a problem that needed solving in their kingdom. I have a few solutions in mind for him, but I would like to see what you come up with as well."
Sitting up a bit straighter, he set his drink to the side and leaned forward, steepling his fingers together. "As I'm sure you're aware, Lorendale has magic users they call Gifteds. There always seems to be strife between them and the non-gifted populace of that kingdom these days. And, you recall the disaster that was allowed to exist called the Eldouirs?"
Keion frowned at the thought of the group, but pressed on. "I was asked for a way to nullify the gifteds magic if needed. Something inconspicuous that could be applied to each registered gifted without their knowledge, that they would be unable to find and remove. They wish to have it as a means of control if they ever have a problem like the Eldouirs arise again."

Calanthe nodded, planning to continue making friends with any Dresmondi should could. It was for the betterment of the Blackwood name after all. There was more than just Kester to work on then.
Taking in the next information though, Calanthe focused up quick when it came to enchanting. She liked the puzzle of a fresh challenge, a new enchantment to craft. Although she didn't quite understand the directive. "Nullify the gifteds magic? Why not control it?"
Still her mind was spinning. An insect would be good, a centipede or a worm to work into the gifteds ear. It could easily work it's way into the victim while they were registering their gift. Sketching it out quickly she knew passed the drawing of the small mechanical worm to Keion. "The brass used in collars and other such things would work."
Keion sat back again at Calanthe's question, eyes bright with consideration, until he waved a hand a bit dismissively. "Control might be a bit too complicated for what they want to accomplish. They just want to be able to strip the gifteds of their magic, should they decide to turn on them."
He glanced at her quick sketch briefly, his head tilted to the side. "Perhaps. They had mentioned conducting a physical exam, and this could be placed within their ear easily during that, probably without them noticing." Sitting back, he considered again. "I had thought about tattoos, something like both you and Pietro have on your bodies. But I couldn't think of a way to apply those without them knowing."
Calanthe never understood why other kingdoms were so short-sighted. They always focused on immediate results. It was why they still had chamberpots and archaic marriages. But it would make it easier for them to fulfill the request and seem like the heros to Lorendale. So be it.
"The enchantment could seek the gifted out without needing a physical exam. Some will refuse a physical exam and unless Lorendale is planning on changing their ways I doubt they would force anyone into anything." She didn't bother to comment on the tattoos. Unless they planned on knocking those out and slapping a tattoo on them, it simply wouldn't work.
